Scratch Accessibility for Low-vision and Blind Users
Great Idea! I Have An Idea That Would Make Blind People Be Able To Make Projects, But The Idea Would Not Fit In A Project.

Scratch Accessibility for Low-vision and Blind Users
That’s great! I support. Hi!
I’m a member of the Scratch Team, and over the next two years, I’ll be working on a project to make Scratch more accessible to Scratchers with low-vision or blindness.
Before I start designing and building, I want to hear about your experience with Scratch and how you think Scratch accessibility can be improved–especially if you have blindness or low-vision. Your stories, thoughts, and feedback will guide the project and make sure that I’m making changes that improve Scratcher experiences, so
please share on this forum!
Thanks!
Tina

I actually have pretty great vision, but this is a good idea for those who have visual impairments.
As said earlier, an option to make a dark theme might look good as well. I don't really like the really bright screen considering it can really hurt my eyes if I'm in a dark room, but usually I'm okay with it. Some users might not be as okay with it.

Wow! That's amazing! Will there be voice control/text-to-speech and larger text? That would help low-vision/blind people a lot. I love seeing projects like these emerge, and I believe there should be more of them.

My vision is not amazing, but as other users have stated above I support the idea of an optional dark theme on the Scratch website. I'm sure that would make it easier to browse, especially when it is night, for Scratchers including myself

I have an idea. Make it so that there is a checkbox that will make the editor (except the costume editors and views of sprites and images) black and white so people who can't read writing with colour around it can read it easier. Just a thought anyway.

Yes! Although I have brightness control, I do get eye strain in the morning. I would try to make it darker in the morning. I think iOS 11 has this feature for darkening the screen at certain times.

A dark theme would look really nice. Support. As said earlier, an option to make a dark theme might look good as well.
All of that applies to me. I'm in a dark room right now, actually. I don't really like the really bright screen considering it can really hurt my eyes if I'm in a dark room, but usually I'm okay with it.

Agreed. Some users might not be as okay with it.

thats a good thing, I know someone who is colorblindIs colour blindness also being considered for accessibility? It is, of course, another visual impairment, and can cause some issues with similar colours in the Scratch colour palette.
Yes it is!
Thanks, all for your suggestions! If you know anyone with blindness or low-vision who can speak to their experience with Scratch or is willing to try Scratch it would be awesome to hear their thoughts too

Yes, I think that would be a great idea!
I have seen some projects where if the mouse hovers over a certain button, a robotic voice says “Start” or something like that. I have also seen ones where instead of clicking on buttons, the controls went through by the keyboard. So you know that people have already been doing projects to improve the conditions for visually-impaired users. In fact, through searches, I have lately seen a lot of projects that have voiced controls and features.
Also, people have been doing drawings in high-contrast mode for visually-impaired people to be able to se
Normal Light Blue=High Contrast Red
Normal Black=High Contrast White
Normal Light Green=High Contrast Hot Pink
Normal Dark Blue=High Contrast Orange
Normal Orange-High Contrast Dark Blue
It depends on the shade of the color, which in High Contrast Mode the colors are made brighter and more vivid (for example, neon) for visually-impaired users to be able to see.
But voice sensing and bright colors would be really beneficial for blind and people of low vision.

Tina from scratch team, that would be good. Maybe during the registration part you can ask do you have low vision or colorblindness or have bad vision? and the person can check the box on what they have and set up scratch for that particular need. Like for people with low vision and bad vision make things bigger. For colorblindness you could make it the way colorblind people see.
Also, can we make scratch easier for kids with autism and down syndrome?
I am making a discussion page for that if you want to look at it.
Thanks for spending the time to read this.
