How to Make Constructive Comments on Profile Pages ☎

makethebrainhappy wrote:

Originally inspired by the occurrences on @griffpatch’s profile page and on the pages of Scratch Team members, this guide aims to help explain to users what is and isn’t allowed on profile pages. Hopefully this is helpful when you are deciding whether or not to leave a certain comment. Enjoy!

What not to do:

Spam. Posting excessive or intentionally confusing material does not help anybody, and clogs up the user's messages page, drowning out other comments. To learn more about what spam is, how to spot it, and what to do if you see it, see the wiki article on Spam, or this topic.

Advertising. There are a lot of advertisements on other people's profiles. We know you probably worked hard on your projects, and you are probably proud of them, but profiles are not the place to advertise them. If you do want to advertise, try the Show and Tell Forums where you can make a topic about your project. This is allowed, and you will probably have better luck than commenting on people's profile pages.

Advertising wrote:

plz look and show this project https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/———/!

Follow requests. You might consider your projects great–they probably are. That does not justify, however, asking people to follow you. You might want to exchange follows. Profiles can be used to ask for this, but if you haven't seen the user accept a F4F (Follow for follow) in the past, don't ask. It is unlikely for the user to accept. Look at the amount of followers the user has in comparison to the people the user follows first.

Follow requests wrote:

plase follow me!

Complements about projects. Complements about specific projects should go in the project that the complement is for, unless you have something to say about all of their projects as a whole.

Complement wrote:

I love all ur projects they great!

Help with projects. If you need help with your project you may be better off asking in the Help With Scripts forum for help, unless the help is specific to that person. There are a lot of very experienced Scratchers who can help you with your projects, so unless you want help from just one person specifically, you do not have to ask one Scratcher for help.

Help with Scripts wrote:

I really need ur help with my project scratch.mit.edu/projects/——–/

Understanding their code. Sometimes, projects have very complicated code. If you don’t understand the code of a project and are curious about what it means or how it works, it is more appropriate to ask on that project, instead of on the Scratcher’s profile.

Understanding code wrote:

What does the big script in your game do?

Am I allowed to remix? This is a very commonly asked question, and it has a very simple answer: yes, and you don't have to ask. All projects shared on the Scratch website are put under the Creative Commons Share-Alike Attribution 2.0 License. This license requires that when you use someone else's code, images, or sounds, you must give appropriate credit and your project must also be under that license (which Scratch will automatically do for you). For more information about this, read the Scratch FAQ.

Remix wrote:

Plz can I remix your project scratch.mit.edu/projects/——–/?

(Specific to Scratch Team members profile pages) Reporting Users/Projects/Comments. If you want to report something please click the report button. Naming and shaming is discouraged too. Information about where it is located and how to use it can be found on the Scratch Wikipage for the Report button.

Report wrote:

Help! @——- is being mean to be!

Ask for personal information. If you want to know an interest someone has to try and strike a conversation, that is probably alright. Asking for information such as age, location, and other identifying information is prohibited. All conversations are public, which means that anyone can see the information which is posted. If a user, whom you are having a conversation with, posts such a question or reveals this type of information, gently remind them that they should always safeguard their personal information.

Ask for personal information wrote:

where do you live?

Write in all caps. Writing in all caps is the equivalent to screaming at someone online and goes against the community guidelines. So just make sure that your capslock button is off. If you ever accidentally type with capslock on, make sure to either edit your post, if it is in the forum, or make a comment, if you are on a profile or project, right below your previous stating the capslock is a mistake. That will hopefully clear up any confusion!

What to do:

Have conversations. Scratch is a great place to meet great people! A Scratcher’s profile comments are the perfect place to strike a conversation! You can talk about yourself, similar interests or anything else the person might be interested in. Always remember to never give out any personal information though, no matter how much you trust a friend on Scratch.

Conversation wrote:

Hey! How are you? Are you working on any new projects? :D

Ask for constructive advice. When you want specific advice you want from a user, their profile page is a great place to ask. Remember to be polite while asking and thank the user afterwards. They may occasionally be too busy to reply, and if this happens you can always ask in the Help with Scripts or Questions about Scratch forums.

Ask for advice wrote:

Hello! Please can you give me advice on how to get people to look at my games? Thanks!

Celebrate Holidays or Birthdays. If there is an important or interesting holiday occurring today, you can brighten someone’s day by wishing them a good day. Just remember that they might not celebrate some holidays if they aren’t part of their religion or simply not celebrated in their country, so don’t overdo it, and make sure that you aren’t spamming.

Celebrate Holidays wrote:

Merry Christmas! Hope you had a great time!

Hey, another siggy scroller!

Hey, if you made it this far, you're a pretty dedicated siggy scroller.

Guess what? I'm a baker, dancer, Disney fan, enneagram lover, teen, who loves scratch, helping out in shops, and guiding new scratchers on their journey through scratch.

My sister is PFTV. If you don't know who she is, good luck finding her…

You know, you should really stop climbing down the stairs to my basement.

I told you to stop, there are some personal things down there!

Whoa whoa whoa, you better sllllllooooooooowwwww down.

You're still looking? Alright fine. Now you know. DON'T GO FURTHER

Come on, please?

… *sobs* pwetty pwese?

Alright fine. You went this far. I guess I've gotta give ya somethin'. Here ya go, I'm a potato. You heard it. now go to my profile and comment “chez puffs”.
