I'm interested in low cost 3D printing for my business but as it stands my main concern is detail. $300 for a printer is no good if it can't print things as finely as I need them.

What kind of business? Just curious.

I sculpt Warhammer-scale parts (my site). Being able to print some things would be extremely useful.

I have a friend working on 3D models of some sci-fi weapons I designed but printing them may prove tricky due to scaling and the like. It'd be a lot easier if I could print them out at home rather than at using a company like Shapeways. I'm currently keeping a keen eye on the Makibox A6 but given the amount of delays I'm somewhat hesitant to get on board with that.

As per your other projects I'm guessing that your reasoning behind building a 3D printer would be cost. It'd cost you at least $300, probably double that. You're better off buying one if the point is to have access to a 3D printer. If the objective is to learn then I would recommend working up to that kind of thing by doing some other cool projects. I'm a big fan of this book, for example. Unfortunately for me I'm terrible with a soldering iron!

Cool! I never used a soldering iron, I really want to try making a PCB though, just to try it out.

Really? Then trying to build a 3D printer is way out of your league for the moment. I recommend the book in question because it has interesting projects (some more than others) whilst also covering electronics and the construction thereof in a fun way. I've got a copy of it on my shelf whenever I feel like having another bash at PCBs, ICs, and the like. For the moment though I tend to ask friends to do my soldering work for me, saves me making a hash of it.

My dad's made one from parts (most of which were made by other 3D printers, which he bought for approx. £200, maybe $350. It took a good month to build but we now have a working 3D printer.
