For you and I they're more fun. More normal folks, for want of a better description, seem to find the barrier to entry too high for the most part. Social media is accessible and bolts onto normal communication. There's far less emphasis on meeting new people.

Ok. I fixed the website now so the true background is #ccc (which is a light grey) rather than #ff8000 (which is a bright orange).
