An operating system (OS) is a must for getting your computer to work. There are a lot of operating systems out there. Not just Windows, Linux, or Mac. There's a whole world of operating systems! Windows, Linux, and Mac are just the types of operating systems. We have many different linux flavors (distributions), Windows versions, and Mac versions. I prefer to use Linux for these main reasons: it's free, it's easily convertable (easy to transfer from another OS), and it's a customizable OS. There's a whole website dedicated to making your own Linux distribution, called suse studio (www.susestudio.com). Just download a distribution, download a image file burning software, and use the software to burn the Linux OS to a CD/DVD. So, what OS will you choose? And, remember, may the odds forever be in your flavor.

No, they're not. Types would be kernel types. In the old days Windows ran on a microkernel, these days it's a hybrid kernel. Linux runs on a monolithic kernel (IIRC) and OSX seems to be a hybrid kernel too (although from what I can tell it leans more towards monolithic).

A few other interesting operating systems:

• *BSD
  AmigaOS
  ReactOS

I think you need to do a bit more reading on what an operating system is before you continue down this path. Putting together a modern computer may be easier than most LEGO kits (it really is) but understanding what goes on under the hood needs a bit of legwork.

I meant that you're clearly enthusiastic about the subject (and that's awesome!) but you need to do a bit more reading up on your chosen subject.

What you meant doesn't come across in what you wrote just like you seem to be taking my attempt to steer you towards a better understanding to be criticism. It's not. I wish there had been more straightforward things for me to learn from but back when I was learning about this stuff Wikipedia had less than 100,000 articles.

I pressed F12 on the network boot thing on a school computer and it had the Windows Developer Preview setup on the network. Of course I didn't actually install it because that would get me in trouble.
