Riots in Egypt

You may have heard on the news or maybe in your social studies class that Egypt is experiencing civil unrest.

Short story:
The new President of Egypt, Mohamed Morsy, a Muslim, was ousted by the Egyptian military. His Islamic supporters have strongly protested the move, arming themselves and clashing with the military in the streets of Cairo and other cities. As many as 600 Egyptians have already died and 4000+ injured, and more are to follow if the protests continue.

If you have any other pertinent information about the riots, please post it so I may update.

Discuss your thoughts on the riots.

this is not entirely correct
for example: you said “the civilians of Egypt have strongly protested the move” which incorrectly implies that the vast majority protest Morsi's ousting

If the people who wanted the pressie out weren't Muslim, what were they?

Hopefully a non Muslim government will be more lenient to human rights and stuff.

Reading the news. Why would the Boston Bombings and Newtown shootings be in here if this wasn't supposed to be here?

Exactly, news is considered both something you watch on TV and something you read.

Where else would it go? This is the “Discuss” section of Scratch.

My signature was a really funny gif of Red wiggling her eyebrows, but I left it for a few months and it got taken down. Pity.

This is the best place for it, in the Discuss section. As long as the discussion remains respectful and appropriate for all ages, we are willing to host it here.

Opposing a theocracy does not mean that you oppose the religion, per se.

Hopefully evything cools down. Clearly there are massive protests on both sides. I pretty much feel like the voters should have generally just “dealt with it” though. I supported the first protests (ousting Mumbarak) but if Egypt wants to become a modern and civilized society they have to realize that it's not acceptable to completely rewrite the constitution every time you disagree with the government. It's also generally unacceptable to run a theocracy, but unless any wrongdoing can be proven of corrupt elections or impeachment protocols following the constitution (or otherwise severe human rights intrusions, which would justify revolution) you must respect the democratically elected leader.

Back from hiatus?
