Have The Bad Word Detector Tell People What Bad Word They Wrote

There's a problem with your comment - it contains the word “burg” which is on the blacklist.
or:
I like burgers!

Isn't it a bad idea to tell kids what words are bad words? Some people might then ask their parents what words mean (*shudder*) or something else…

I also don't know if Scratch would be considered a “safe” site if it sometimes explicitly mentioned bad words to its users.

If someone can explain to me how this wouldn't pose an issue, that would be much appreciated.

I half-support this. I agree it is very annoying when the bad word detector goes of randomly! The only problem with this suggestion is if it shows the bad word then kids might learn new bad words from it.

Well, if it highlighted the entire word, it would be harder to learn a new bad word accidentally, it would just show you what set off the bad word detector and what you need to change.

Why would kids learn new bad words if they typed it?

I was thinking about this topic the other day, and I have something I'd like to add to it.

TheMonsterOfTheDeep wrote:

I also don't know if Scratch would be considered a “safe” site if it sometimes explicitly mentioned bad words to its users.
Instead of highlighting what and where the bad word is, the detector should say how.
Confused?
Let's say there's a word that can be used as an insult (but not always), like, um…Blue, and I write a comment saying,
“My favorite color is blue!”
Instead of the BWD saying, “There's a problem with your text” It should say “Your text may be disrespectful.”
Or If I have a bad word (let's use green) in my comment (e.g., “Color green”, or “Gee, Radical & Epic, Eugene-Nick!”), the BWD would say “Your text may include a bad word.”
The BWD wouldn't highlight the bad word (because then kids would learn a new bad word, completely wrecking the point of the BWD in the first place), it would say why it thinks there's a bad word.
also I may have said “Support” a long time ago somewhere on this topic, but I'd like to change that to semi-support for reasons above. :P

I think it should highlight the word instead of type it out. It would be more unassuming, considering an official GUI with sensitive words in it would be… Well, sensitive.

Hmm. I think highlighting the entire word (as above) is a good idea, but it may not be a good idea to immediately highlight it. Instead, I'd suggest that the message at first only pops up and nothing else, with a link saying something like “why am I seeing this?”, which when clicked would highlight the entire word.

Here's what I think.

Let's say the comment was “I really like airplanes!”, and “plan” was a bad word.
  • Telling you what the bad word is (e.g. “The word ‘plan’ set off the filter.”) - Bad because that could possibly teach the kid a new bad word.
  • Highlighting the bad word (e.g. the original comment getting changed to "I really like airplanes!") - Slightly good, this isn't as bad as the above because the word doesn't appear in isolation, but it still is highlighted, making it obvious and possibly teaching the kid a new bad word.
  • Telling you to try using different words (e.g. “If the filter has been set off unintentionally, please try using different words”) - Slightly good because the kid might not be able to figure it out, depending on comment length, and if he doesn't know any swears it will be difficult.
  • Telling you/highlighting which word/words the bad word appeared in (e.g. “The word ‘airplane’ set off the filter, so please try using different words.”) - Good because the kid would not explicitly get the bad word pointed out to them, and if he didn't already know the word he probably wouldn't learn it.
So I support telling you (or highlighting) which word (or words) set it off.

Support, I once had typed a misspelled word in a studio desc, and I had to delete everything.

rollercoasterfan wrote:
Semi support. What good does the bad word detector do if you don't know what was detected? But then again, what would the outcome look like? Displaying bad words probably aren't a good idea.
Maybe scratch should censor every letter of the word besides the 1st letter.
