No, I think Smart Steering was made for people new to the game/franchise and/or younger children.
You'll get better.
If you turn Smart Steering off, be careful on the Rainbow Road maps.

• Hit the start line sign and flew over it later in Mario Circuit
  
• With Smart Steering turned off, hit someone and became happy while falling off Ribbon Road
  
• Not intentional, but at the end of Mt. Wario, Morton, covered up Blaze, the mii I was playing as
  
• Managed to nearly fly over to the finish line after leaving the starting line, before falling and being saved by Latiku, in Toad's Turnpike

• Keep onto your banana or green shell. Hold onto it from the back, so you can defend yourself from green and red shells.
  
• Use super horns and mushrooms (time them right to escape) to escape Blue Shells. If you don't have those, either just bail yourself out at the right time or (if you see the blue shell sign coming early on the map) shift to second place.
  
• Heavy characters are the best. Morton works the best out of all heavy characters.
  
• Jump and drift boost a lot.
  
• In the anti-gravity section, use others to give yourself a free boost.

• If you keep falling off the edge, turn on Smart Steering. You might lose access to Ultra Super Turbo Boost and cool shortcuts, but it helps. Smart Steering is useful for 150cc and 200cc.*
  
• Turn on Auto-Accelerate if you don't want to accidentally stop.*
  
• If you're a pro at speeding up without slowing others down, try smuggling powerful items to first place. Then use it for your advantage.
