Something is up with the backpack. I can’t put small sprites in the backpack without it failing immediately. Not even taking a second to think, it just fails the moment I drag the sprite into it. Is this happening to others?

Yes, this bug is unfortunately affecting everyone on Scratch.

Backpacks are currently broken and unusable on Scratch, and all we can do is wait for them to be fixed.
The Scratch Team is aware of this situation.

It won't fix your backpack, but it does provide a temporary alternative.

I cannot drag any sort of code into my backpack. I found out if the block relies on other scripts in the sprite, the backpack might not be blueshifted.

This was over a month ago. Also, I am pretty sure scratch deleted that feature.

The status seems to be that if a singular block relies heavily on the sprite, then it cant be used.
Sections that aint no gonna work:

move (x) steps
say [value] for (2) secs
broadcast [ v]
forever

end
ask [] and wait
((5) / (0))
set video transparency to () %
