The Lab Reports ~ Sci-Fi SWC July 2024

Welcome, scientists. Are you ready to save lives?

Hello, science fiction campers! We are so excited to welcome you to our cabin and to have great time this session.

In this thread, you can find the cabin guide (important info for the session), as well as short updates on our storyline throughout the month.

We highly encourage you to follow this topic, so that you can stay up-to-date on developments.

Being in the know is important ;D

Additionally, we ask you not to post in here for organization's sake. If you have any questions, concerns, or anything else, we ask you to please post it in the sci-fi cabin or to one of us. Thanks <3

The three of us are beyond ecstatic for what this month holds, and we know you are, too. Our greatest hopes are that each of you will have a wonderful time writing and that you'll enjoy your stay in the Sci-Fi laboratory. Come talk to us if you need anything, or if you just want to chat!

Science Fiction for the win! ♡

Science Fiction Cabin Guide

Welcome to the labs. We’re glad to have you. There are lives waiting to be saved.

About

What's this, you may be asking? Here, you can find a variety of important information and links that will help you make the most of this session. You'll get a sense of what's in store this session as well as things specific to our cabin. You can refer back to this at any point during the session. If there's any confusion, feel free to ask questions in the cabin or directly to one of us! We won't mind a bit <3
We encourage you to read through this, especially if you are new to SWC – this information is vital. We understand that it's a lot of info- it is every camper who joins, from the hosts to the (co)leaders to the newest camper. However, you'll get the hang of it- everyone does <3

What is SWC?

Scratch Writing Camp is a month-long online camp dedicated to helping writers grow their skills. The camp is made up of ‘cabins’, which are groups of campers run by a leader and 1-3 co-leaders. Those cabins compete on a leaderboard, earning points through activities. Campers also work to reach their own individual word goals.
The official SWC FAQ can be found here, compiled by one of our amazing hosts, Moonlit.

What are the SWC Activities?

Dailies - every day at midnight UTC, a new daily prompt is released. These are generally short activities with small point rewards and bonus points for sharing your writing. You can share your writing through the megathread (link here) or a personal forum topic or project.

Weeklies - once a week, a longer writing activity is released with multiple parts and one general theme.

Cabin Wars - two times per session, cabins will send timed challenges to each other that require teamwork and a whole lot of energy - or else points will be lost. It’s always a great time. Here is an incredible guide by our wonderful host, Luna.

Word Wars - two campers from separate cabins battle it out to write as many words as possible in a short amount of time.

Critiquitare - swap stories with another camper and help give feedback, compliments, and critique for each other’s work.

Writing Competition - put your best work forward and submit a piece you’ve worked hard on. By the end of August, rewards will be handed out- along with a good helping of acclaim and glory!

Adding Words and Points

To add words to your word goal, comment in your word count group how much you’ve written. You should have been invited to curate a WCG studio when you got that first message from either Poppy, Summer, or Snowy. Comment something like “Daily 7/8, 400 words” or “History essay, 900 words”. The leader of your word count group should add your words within a few days.
To add points for completed activities, pop over to the main cabin and comment something similar to “Daily/weekly/other completed for Sci-Fi, — words for — points” and a leader should add your points shortly thereafter!

Our Storyline

This session, Science-Fiction’s cabin focuses on a disease outbreak that has occured in a world-renouned laboratory. The leaders of the lab, Dr. Poppy, Dr. Summer, and Dr. Snowy, are determined to find a cure for the disease before it can wreak too much havoc. Surely it would be easy for such a celebrated lab? However, behind the small virus, there lies secrets upon secrets, waiting to be unlocked.
Small activities throughout the month will help you reach your word goals, become involved with the cabin, and make friends with your fellow scientists. We encourage you to do these- all three of us know from experience that engaging in the storyline is an easy way to take your SWC experience to the next level.
Additionally, you can go claim a PFP from our absolutely amazing co-leader, Summer, right here. Let's represent!! (plus they're also just super amazing <33)
Throughout the month, you can find updates in this thread as well as in our cabin.
Sci-fi for the win! <3

Final Note

We hope you have an amazing time in Science Fiction and SWC this session. We three are beyond excited to get to know all of you and get better at writing.
A couple of things to keep in mind- you never have to be in the dark! If you have any questions or concerns, there are a multitude of people- inside and outside of sci-fi- who would love to help you out. Additionally, all three of us are okay with you asking questions on our profiles.
Also, remember that SWC is, above all, a virtual writing camp. It’s not the end-all-be-all of your life. Please remember to take care of yourself. This includes eating well, staying hydrated, getting plenty of sleep, and keeping time in your life for friends, family, school, hobbies, and self-care.
And finally, the best way to make this the best session ever is to just have fun! We encourage you to find common interests and make friends with other campers- the community is one of the best things about SWC, and the best time to start interacting with it is right now. Enjoy the friendly competition, revel in the glorious chaos, and have fun writing!
