Is Scratch Dying?

To be honest, if you look at 2020, you will see a whole chart there. You can see how skyrocketed scratch was. Yes, pandemic and online shifting may have given it an advantage, but honestly, scratch is just falling apart nowadays imo.

Is Scratch Dying?

not neccesarily

while scratch is no longer growing, the decrease in MAU is relatively small, its moreso reaching a stable point

Is Scratch Dying?

no not really

educated guess

you are more likely to get struck by lightning than for this site to shut down in the next 5 years due to inactivity

No, the reason you see a drop in activity from 2020-2021 is because of the COVID-19 pandemic that had it's height in those years.

That's exactly what it was — and note that the giant spike was mostly just comments. Since 2022, comment activity seems to be steady on average. The amount of new users and new projects on average has been steadily increasing since Scratch's creation in 2007.

I know everyone else has given a ton of answers, but I just wanted to give some statistics that show Scratch is still growing:

Monthly active project and comment creators:

Search interest on Google for Scratch:

Scratch's income and assets (tax returns):

Every single one of these shows Scratch is far from dying. In fact, it's at its peak right now.

That graph ends in febuary 2022, here is a more accurate graph
if you look at the graph for a year it is decreasing…

Yesterday, I was a centimeter shorter when I went to bed compared to when I woke up. Old age must be creeping in! I can't show up to my exams being 120cm!

Not really. You have to look at the bigger picture since there are always small dips. Funny how decreased search interest in July also corresponds with the drop in monthly active users:

As always, it'll rebound back up again. Taking the statistics from only this year isn't a large enough sample size to predict where it'll go next.

scratch should be fine for a while, 1000s of schools use it, kids sneak on it to play games in class (half my class is on scratch when they should be doing work), and its just used as a learning tool in general, so i don't think its going anywhere soon

Well, it depends. Multiple sites may show different kinds of data. As far as my knowledge goes, what i know is that scratch has had a huge spike and many Scratchers were online during the pandemic. Do ya'll remember when there was no space for you to join on those trendy onlihe platformers popular scratchers made?(Sterlon, Awesomebricks9, StratfordJames, etc…) Now, if you walk into those projects, no one would even bother to see the project, you would be completely deserted, kinda similar to whats happening to garden warfare (pvz).

What I've been using as a metric to measure Scratch activity is “What The Community Is Remixing/Loving”. In general, Scratch is just emptier now.
