Lyric Promo ~ SWC July 2023
❝ are you ready for it? ❞
I jotted down the exact coordinates of my location before swiftly pivoting on my heels to cross the hall. Robin texted me — as well as the other people that signed up for this writing summer camp — to meet in the main room up front to introduce ourselves, though it appeared I’d gotten lost.
Heaving out a long and rather exhausted sigh, I bit my bottom lip and kept my eyes glued to my phone. Too glued; a shot of abrupt pain rang through my entire body as I stumbled backward — as did another two teenage girls. It took a moment for me to grasp my inner emotions prior to realizing I just bumped straight into them.
My face felt utterly flushed. “Ahh! I’m so sorry…I didn’t see you both there.”
“Don’t worry about it, it was an accident and we’re both perfectly fine anyway. Are you on your way to the main foyer for the SWC meeting by chance?” The first girl wondered.
I nodded as my eyes flickered between them.
“Ooh, awesome! We are as well,” she didn’t hesitate even a bit to extend her arm out to shake mine in a firm yet warm manner. Her long rich brown hair framed her face and she gently nudged the girl beside her. “I’m Iris, or Ris for short, and this is Elara. We’re actually both leading Lyric.”
The second girl — Elara — smiled meekly in my direction as she winked. “Yep. Aka the most iconic cabin this session that’s quite clearly going to win; you know, all of the lovely works. You did put Lyric as a preference…right?”
Both of them shot slightly impatient glances at me that made me furrow my eyebrows in deep thought. “I’m truthfully not sure. Could one of you, like, tell me a bit about what Lyric has to offer?”
“Of course! We are definitely inspired by Taylor Swift and her music as a central starting point that also revolves around a fantastic fantasy journey with lots of puzzles and riddles to solve throughout while still growing your writing skills along the community that showed up here today.” Ris used her light hands to gesture around the somewhat crowded hallway.
“And without a doubt,” Elara remarked, quiet yet confident. “all twenty one of the cabins here in SWC are truly incredible, but if you need an idea on where to begin — well, we’ve got you covered…” she was searching for my name.
“Zoe.” I clasped my hands together rather tightly.
“That’s a really pretty name. Ah, I’m afraid we must bust out of here as there are several behind the scenes details that are deeply in need of assistance before Robin and the other hosts give their welcoming speech. I hope to see you around camp regardless of what cabin you sign up for! Oh, and by the way, the main foyer room is down a bit further; first door to your right.”
“Perfect, thank you very much. Likewise to both of y’all.”
I’d already wholeheartedly snapped my decision into place and made up my mind: I was putting Lyric down as one of my preferences…even if they seemed to have some, well, certainly thrilling ideas planned.
