is this new?
My guess is they made the heart white and the star black to symbolize equality.What about yellow and brown and red to include all races?
Yeah I’m really not sure if this was the best way to celebrate black history month as it probably created confusion more than anything else for people who did not know it was black history month. But I guess it’s not a big deal.

It could be just to see them better as before it was a much more lighter tone, so Scratch must've changed it to make them easier to spot (Though I could be wrong).
If I turn to the left I will point in front of me and say that is north and I'll point behind me and say that is south. If the next I'm facing right, I will point in front of me and say that is north and I'll point behind me and say that is south. North and south are illusions just like me.

Really? for me they are still one white one black.I don't think the buttons have updated for everyone yet.
It may have to do with the browser caching files so pages can load faster, try pressing CTRL + Shift + R to clear the cache.

If this is a new design I’m really not sure how they are objectively better than the previous one. They are not worse but I would like to know why they changed them.

This happened to me too, i’m on an iPad air by apple. My browser / operating system: MacOS Macintosh X 10.15.7, Safari 16.2, No Flash version detected

I did some digging around for some recent changes and it seems like this fix (https://github.com/LLK/scratch-www/pull/7264) from the scratch-www repo is what you're talking about. Turns out it's to make the buttons more colorblind-friendly by adding borders to the icons. Suppose that's because it's hard to see the icon against the white background for people who are colorblind.(Source)
