SWC November 2022 Fourth Weekly (text version)
Read all instructions before beginning.

Welcome to the fourth weekly of SWC November 2022! Please only use this version if the project is unable to load on any device you have access to. Find the project here: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/762359450/
Similar to the last session, you get to choose from a variety of activities! You can work on whatever writing you'd like for this weekly, whether that's a new story or a pre-existing project.

You are a plucky young bird, the protagonist of our plotline, setting off on a flying asteroid in search of adventure in outer space. Sure, it wasn’t your intention to intrude upon the Sky Kingdom of Jim Flabsdz, the sky monster who’s now hungrily chasing you down - but you’re not leaving until you’ve explored every last planet in the Galaxswc.

There are 15 planets to choose from, themed around the cabins, and you can complete them in any order you like. Clicking on a planet will give you three word crawl options, and you must complete ONE OPTION to move on. Make sure to write for the specified amount of time or number of words! After you have completed ONE of the options, you can click away and move onto the next planet - just remember to save your progress regularly (guidance in the project description). Explore the universe, escape Jim Flabsdz, and enjoy!

Write 100 words to begin your adventure.

There are 15 links to “planets” below. You can complete these planets in any order you'd like, but you must complete all 15 planets before clicking on the conclusion. To complete a planet, you must click on the link to that planet and complete ONE option from that planet. Make sure to write the corresponding words or duration that that option specifies. You may not redo planets.

In your final weekly post, you must include each planet you went to and which options you chose, in order, and state that the daily team gave permission. If you did not get permission from a daily team member to use this version, you will be required to include the code you receive at the end of the project version. We will keep track of who has received the text-based version with our permission.

CONCLUSION

Write 100 words to conclude as you fly away from your final planet.

It’s a miracle - you’ve made it! Fifteen planets later, you’ve officially explored every last corner of the Galaxyswc. Looks like it’s time to go back home and tell everyone about all your adventures. Chirping with glee, you pilot your asteroid out of Jim Flabsdz’s sky kingdom, expecting to hear him roaring behind you.

Instead, from the darkest depths of space, music begins to play …
{'Jim Flabsdz' by Sunclaw68 and -Alocasia}

-

In your final weekly post, you must include each cabin you went to, and the number of the option you chose. If you did not get permission from a daily team member to use this version, you will be required to include the code you receive at the end of the project version.

Adventure Kingdom

Planet Intro: The Adventure Kingdom is a medieval paradise full of stories and memories, and you seem to be caught right in the middle of it.You look around, awestruck by the sight of everyone working together. But then you realize - the final battle is yet to be fought, and you'll need to prepare.

Option 1 (Prompt): In preparing for a final battle, you'll absolutely need to work with your environment as much as you can! In the next 100 words, your character is forced to face a challenging obstacle pertaining to the setting.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): Sprint for five minutes as you explore the Adventure Kingdom and become familiar with its environment.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): You talk to some of the residents of Adventure Kingdom, and they tell you about how things have changed in the past few weeks. You listen in, intrigued… as you are learning, sprint to the nearest thousand from your current word count.

Bi-fi Cinema

Planet Intro: You find yourself in a comfortable red seat in a dark theater. The scent of popcorn almost overwhelmingly fills the room. You stare at the absurdly dressed characters that are walking around the cinema without a care in the world, stealing popcorn and drinks and chatting with everybody else. This will take some getting used to.

Option 1 (Prompt): Take a few moments to think of something extremely absurd. Then see if you can apply that to your story. Essentially, make something absurd happen! A character is revealed to be a robot, everything up to this point was a dream, the narrator isn't actually who you thought it was, the whole world is blown up - anything you can think of.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): Everything has an entirely random chance in the Bi-Fi Cinema, and so does your writing. Roll a standard six-sided die. Multiply that number by 100, and write at least that many words.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): Your favorite movie or TV character steps out of the scene and approaches you! While you are conversing, take the number of letters in their name and sprint for that many minutes.

Dystopian Realm

Planet Intro: You crash into an apparently endless silver field. If the world was a freefall, then your eyes would catch themselves midair in the shimmer that surrounds that atmosphere. A hushed ethereal aura wraps around you like a comforter, speaking to you in a silent language conjured from thin air. There are appears to be some… supernatural, almost celestial, force spectating…

Option 1 (Prompt): Suddenly, a new never-before-seen character appears out of nowhere. You don't know if this is a moment to ask for directions, or to run for your life. For the next 150 words in your story, a supernatural/celestial being intervenes in the middle of whatever your protagonist was doing.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): Did you know the Dystopian Realm has a super cool collaborative story going on? Go to the main cabin and ask for somebody to write the first few sentences to a story. Then, in at least 100 words, somehow incorporate this into your main story and continue this story on! (Your partner does not have to continue your portion once you've written it.)

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): I don't know about you, but Dystopian Realm is giving me Bejeweled - Taylor Swift vibes. For the next 5 minutes, your character will walk into a room/situation with newfound confidence, practically dazzling everybody nearby.

Fan-fi Time Travel Agency

Planet Intro: A sibilance is heard after the slamming of two automatic doors. This document-filled room seems to be some kind of secret location, due to the fact that you can't seem to find much information on where exactly this place is. Until, of course, someone welcomes you to the Fan-Fi Agency: the land where timelines blur.

Option 1 (Prompt): You quickly learn that anything is possible in this new environment. Past, present, and future are but trivial words. Time is everywhere at once. And also nowhere at once. Makes sense, right? Have a blast from the past and write a 150 word flashback.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): Whoops, looks like you had a little too much fun with the whole time travel thing. Do you know how many time paradoxes you just created? Write for 10 minutes while apologizing to the Fan-Fi leaders for your time shenanigans. If you reached 200 words, they're convinced. Otherwise, write 100 more words to butter them up.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): No matter how many times you switched the timeline, the space monster decided to stay on your tracks. It's time to jump back to the present. Take the time and convert it to minutes and seconds (10:38 am -> 10 minutes, 38 seconds), and sprint for that amount of time.

Fantasy Steampunk Sanctuary

Planet Intro: A cool, sharp spark alights in front of you. The sky blazes awake, and the creak and drum of machinery fills you. Gears turning, the flutter of wings against the fabric of sky, the whimsical breathing of the waves - a delicate symphony between nature and invention like the world has never seen before. The air itself is made of strands of bright gold magic, and as your eyes turn from wonder to wonder, memories and dreams flood your heart and mind.

Option 1 (Prompt): You’ve been invited to witness a new technological invention! It’s on the other side of the dock - you’ll have to take a boat across. Introduce a boat into your story in 150 words (or, if it fits better, a different type of transportation). How will your character/s navigate to their new destination, and where are they going?

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): You’re taking an afternoon walk through the square when you notice. That colourful, odd structure of a building with the curious steam valves - the building you’ve been intrigued by for days - has been left unguarded, and the door open. You take a quick look around you. No one’s there. You stealthily skip inside the building and decide to take just a teensy peek. Sprint for 7 minutes, as fast as you can! You don’t want to get caught.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): Oh no, it’s raining! A winged creature (dragon? gargoyle? you’re too shy to ask) kindly offers you a ride back to the Sanctuary, and you accept. But the mist clouds his navigational senses, and soon you’re both terribly lost - and not a map in sight. Write 250 words while you wait for the sun to come out again.

Folklore Trails

Planet Intro: You’ve landed in a mystical forest where gentle music, coming from nowhere in particular, filters through the leaves. Wildflowers line the twisting paths, and you are filled with a disquieting sense of misplaced nostalgia. Here, the lines between fantasy and reality blur, and the boundaries between truth and fiction become almost indiscernible…

Option 1 (Prompt): As you pick your way between the trees, you glance down and see something – a small object, half-hidden in the undergrowth. Perhaps someone dropped it there in years gone by. Introduce the story of a lost relic into your narrative within 103 words.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): You stumble across a little village; the Folklore leaders invite you in to relax and enjoy a delicious bowl of Lio’s famous soup. Write 200 words at your own pace while the mysterious quartet tell stories around the campfire.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): When you’re deep in the Folklore Trails, you hear a twig snap behind you… some forgotten things are still worth running from. Pick a Taylor Swift song and sprint for its duration to escape.

Hi-fi Train Robbery

Planet Intro: A shadow flit past you, a swirl of darkness and deceit. You catch the yellow glint of gold among the grey, and reach out a hand. A coin escapes the shadow tornado lands in the centre of your palm, and you curl your fingers around it. The shadow draws to a stop. You look up at them, your fellow robber-mate, your shadow, your partner in crime. ‘Ready for your next adventure?’ they whisper, in a voice as hoarse and timeless as crime.

Option 1 (Prompt): Train robbers are - well, robbers. But sometimes, some of them make mistakes, and sometimes even (worst of all) are tempted to give into kindness and regret instead of following the route of careless thievery. In 100 words, make your character remember a time they had stolen something from someone, and then later given it back. Could this memory influence the the current decisions they have to make?

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): You’re scaling the roof of a train, light on your feet and quick as lightning. Suddenly, one of the shingles comes lose, and you lose your balance. Write for 5 minutes while you try to regain your footing again. How many words did you write? Multiply your WPM by 5 - if you reached that number, you’re still on the roof! If you didn’t, write for 10 more minutes to climb back onto the train.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): You and your partner are rounding up the goods in a train car, and you plan to split up the work. Flip a coin! If you get heads: The conductor comes in and catches sight of you, and you have to sprint for 20 minutes to get away. If you get tails: You have to secure your partner’s goods as well as yours; write 500 words as fast as you can.

Horror Lost and Found

Planet Intro: You find yourself in a shadowy underworld, lit by fireflies and ruled by a dark council. The air is thick with the skitter of scorpions and the leathery flap of bats’ wings. If you wish to find safety in this horrifying land, it seems like you’ll need the help of the Chosen Ones - the faithful followers of a vengeful Ghost.

Option 1 (Prompt): As you traverse the underworld, you notice that the faces of the people you meet flicker once in a while. Eventually, you come to a terrifying realisation - their ‘faces’ are nothing but elaborate masks, specially constructed to hide their true identities. In your next 150 words, describe someone putting on a literal or metaphorical mask.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): The Ghost has recruited the Horror Campers through their dreams; you’d been feeling a little tired after your last trip on the asteroid, but maybe now isn’t the time to take a nap after all. Write for five minutes to shake the sleepiness from your fingers.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): The Chosen Ones are trying to convince you to join their cause, but you're busy enough as it is escaping from the space monster. Sprint for three minutes while you explain your predicament.

Mystery Express

Planet Intro: Something about this train is… off. You can't seem to put your finger on it– then again, it would be rude to lay fingers on all the suspicious passengers on this train (that would be harassment, don't do that kids)! Every sudden jolt and light flicker startles you, but you'll have to push down your nervousness if you're going to get off of this planet. It's time for you to get your detective tools out!

Option 1 (Prompt): Magnifying glasses help us see details that would otherwise be impossible to notice; perfect for discovering details in found clues! In the next 125 words, your character has an epiphany and notices something of great importance in something they had previously ignored/neglected.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): UV lights find clues (and messes!) in otherwise normal places and on unsuspecting objects. For the next three minutes, head into a room you would normally not spend much time in, and take inspiration from every little thing that is around you! Afterwards, spend the next four minutes incorporating your inspiration into your writing.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): Sometimes, it's important to take photos in case evidence gets tampered with or altered unexpectedly. In order to gather enough photo evidence, word sprint for the next 5 minutes before somebody modifies all your evidence… </33

Naan-fi Breadhouse

Planet Intro: The scent of freshly-baked bread fills the air as you enter a building that seems to be a bakery. The warm, cozy atmosphere suggests that there is recently made dough baking in the oven. Amidst the chaotic adventure, you finally have a safe space to relax and enjoy a little (or perhaps a lot of) bread.

Option 1 (Prompt): Of course, the bakery would be nothing without its loyal bakers. In fact, those bakers deserve some recognition. In the next 100 words, include a character who bakes (whether it be by profession or for a hobby).

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): A Naan-Fi camper takes your order, but your bread needs to bake before you can eat it! The recipe only calls for a half hour or so of baking. You can wait. Write for 26 minutes while your bread sits in the oven.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): You safely eat your bread when that dreadful space monster barges into the door. Roll a dice/generate a number from 1-6. Whichever number you get, that's how many dollars you quickly spend on your food. Sprint for that many minutes.

Poetry Isle of Fame

Planet Intro: PREVIOUSLY ON… you hear the sound of megaphones boom out of nowhere. There are sounds of children… screaming? cheering? dying? all of the above? You can't tell the difference. It seems you have landed on quite the peculiar island. Seagulls and spears fly overhead– wait, spears?

Option 1 (Prompt): Some characters prefer isolation, while others completely abhor it. In the next 150 words, place a character in isolation and write in detail how they react to this loneliness.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): What's an isle of fame without a little competition? Head over to the word war project and challenge somebody to a 5 minute word war! You can proceed once you complete this word war, whether you win or not (you're all winners in the daily team's eyes ;D).

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): What's your WPM? Multiply your WPM by 10, and that's how many seconds you need to write. Word sprint for that amount of time.

Real-fi Inn

Planet Intro: Seeking refuge from the sudden snowy weather, you take refuge in a nearby inn. The door locks with a click behind you, and you suddenly realize something: you're trapped. And it will certainly take a lot to escape.

Option 1 (Prompt): What seemed like a perfectly normal, cozy inn ended up being some sort of an escape room. Sometimes, things aren't quite what they seem. In the next 150 words, build up a happy scene, only to incorporate a dark twist.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): The three Real-Fi leaders smile menacingly as you enter the inn. Sprint for three minutes as you beg them to let you escape.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): Unable to find a proper way to escape, you have to resort to brute force. You smash through the wall. Write for 10 minutes as you pay the damages (after all, you're not a monster).

Sci-fi Simulation

Planet Intro: I think there's been a glitch… you were in your spaceship cruising along, and then five seconds later, you've been sucked into a whole new world. You look around, and there are blocky holes in the sky; it's as if this place is missing multiple pixels. From the corner of the eye, you could have sworn you saw that trash can blur temporarily into static, before being converted into a mailbox. You should get out of here before this entire simulation falls apart.

Option 1 (Prompt): If I told you to think about “glitches” in the world, I'm sure many of you will mention deja vu or premonitions. In the next 150 words, your character gets a feeling they've been somewhere before (but they haven't), or they have a dream that unfolds exactly as it happened in their mind.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): Perhaps the only way to escape the digital world is to take a break from it altogether. Take out a piece of paper, and spend five minutes handwriting a brief outline of the next (short) scene of your story. Afterwards, go back to your device and type out your full scene!

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): If trash cans turn into mailboxes, I'm sure you could transform other objects too. Wouldn't it be fun if you could have lasagna at your fingertips? Or, mangos? Word sprint for three minutes, where everything that your character touches turns into a certain object.

Script Musical

Planet Intro: walk stage right into the theater. Props that should be in the backstage are scattered on the stage. glance at the empty seats that should be filled with audience members… it feels strange being in the theater without anybody there. The half-opened curtains and untidy props signal that an act must have been happening before something caused the performers to disappear…

Option 1 (Prompt): Well, what would happen if characters just happened to disappear for a duration of time in your story? In the next 150 words, do not mention any of your characters at all (you could focus on the setting or use a lot of passive voice)!

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): If nobody's here to clean up the mess left on the stage, I guess it's up to you now. Word sprint for the next four minutes as you try to leave the stage better than you found it.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): There's nobody around to deride you if you said anything embarassing. Go ahead and speak into the mic; nobody's listening. No, but in all actuality, stop writing for the next five minutes and verbalize how you want the next scene in your story to turn out. Afterwards, put into words the ideas that you mentioned out loud!

Thriller Ocean Explorer

Planet Intro: Plink… ping… plink… ping… you hear the sound of the sonar as your spaceship converts itself into a submarine. You're now on a planet completely covered in water. The typical windy resonance outside is replaced with a shallow, mufffled tonality. It's both peaceful and… strange. Shadows cross the windows ocassionally, and the lights dim to save energy.

Option 1 (Prompt): Out of nowhere, you begin to have a sinking feeling… no, literally. Or perhaps that sinking feeling is both metaphorical and literal. In the next 150 words, your character begins to sink, whether that's in a body of water, through mud/quicksand, or through the floor.

Option 2 (Word Crawl Activity): The ocean consists of 5 layers. Use a random number generator to generate 5 numbers between 10 and 100. These 5 numbers will now be the “”5 layers“” (paragraphs) to your ocean. Write 5 paragraphs, and make the word count in each be one of your randomly generated numbers.

Option 3 (Word Crawl Activity): Divers must resurface slowly in order to avoid decompression sickness. Word sprint as fast as you can for 5 minutes. Then, write at the speed of your WPM divided by 2 (you should end up with ~WPMx1.5 total words written) for the next 3 minutes. Then, write at the speed of your WPM divided by 4 for the next 2 minutes (you should end up with WPMx0.5 words at the end). Spend an extra 2 minutes to look back on what you wrote; fix any grammar mistakes and edit your writing to be better.
