SWC November 2022 Weekly #2 - Spoken Forms of Writing

Intro (written by Birdi)

Hey there everybody! The second weekly has arrived

This week, we'll be focusing mainly on spoken forms of writing. It is our hope that through the amazing workshops written to educate you on these topics, you'll learn quite a bit about various types of spoken writing, such as songwriting, spoken word poetry, transcripts, and speeches/monologues.

Once more, to those who created these workshops, we can't thank you enough for sharing your expertise and research with us <3 And once more, thank you to the daily team for developing the idea of this weekly and making it a reality.

WEEKLY STARTS AT: 12:01 a.m. UTC November 9th, 2022. Wait until then to start writing.

So, without further ado, let's get into it!

Part 1: Transcripts (written by Starr)

Let's start off with a bang - the first weekly activity we'll be doing is … writing a transcript!

Check out Sein's wonderful workshop on how to write one here. Then, let’s apply that knowledge to make your own Here’s how it’ll play out:

First, grab a partner! Ask a friend to work with you, or find another interested SWC participant here. After you’ve established that neither of you are sky monster invaders (or, in fact, that you are) interview each other in the comments.

You’ll be doing two interviews - one as the interviewee (being interviewed) and the other as the interviewer (asking the questions). During the one where you’re the interviewer, transcribe the exchange as if you were interviewing your partner in real life.

Here are some example topics you could talk about!
- Your experiences in SWC and writing
- A sport, hobby or activity
- Media (books, music, art)
- Opinions on pineapple pizza
- Anything that interests you

As it’s an interview, keep your tone a bit formal, but also conversational. Feel free to develop a persona for this activity - we’re working on writing skills, not specifically accuracy ^^

You must write a minimum of 200 words (a total of 400 between both of you). Best of luck, and have fun transcribing!

EDIT: clarification on how to do the interviews– you will have TWO interviews, one where you are being interviewed by your partner, and the other where you are interviewing your partner. Each interview should be 200 words to a total of 400 words between both of you. The ANSWERS are what count as words here, not the questions, so your interviewer should continue to ask questions until you have at least 200 words worth of answers to transcribe.

Part 2: Monologues/Speeches (written by Daisy)

The second part of the weekly is about monologues and speeches, and an incredible workshop has been delivered to you by the incredible Fae which you can find here!

Once you’ve read the workshop, find a partner (you can use the same studio as the transcript portion to find one!) and work together to write a collaborative monologue. Make sure to write 300 words individually, but keep the whole monologue under 750 words. Include a basic context structure and a topic of your choice.

Good luck and have fun writing!

Part 3: Spoken Word Poetry (written by Finch)

Let's learn about spoken word poetry! In fact, the best way to learn would be to visit (this) workshop about just that (many thanks to Sun for providing it to us).

Assuming you've read the lovely workshop, it's time to begin the third activity. As you may have guessed, you will be creating your own spoken poem. Please write about something that is actually important to you (after all, poetry has more power when it is about a meaningful topic). The final poem should be 3 minutes long.

Once you have it written, it's time to incorporate the whole “spoken” aspect of it. Try performing it to a mirror by yourself See what words you want to emphasize, how you want to deliver your lines, how you want to move your body. If you feel comfortable enough to do so, record it and listen to the playback. If you really don't want to say it out loud, try to at least imagine how you would say it.

Alright, it's writing time. Good luck, future poets!

Part 4: Songwriting (written by Alba)

The final Spoken Form we’re going to be exploring this week is *technically* not spoken at all - it’s sung. That’s right, this section is going to be all about Songwriting!

This workshop was written by the esteemed @-Alocasia – aka me! – and you will be able to access it (here). Once you’ve read it through, hopefully, you’ll feel well-prepared to approach our very last activity: doing some songwriting of your own.

Return to the (Language of Flowers project) and pick just ONE flower. That flower’s name is now your song title, and its Victorian meaning is the theme – but the rest is up to you! Use what you have learned in the workshop to write and share a set of lyrics. For this exercise, your set of lyrics should:

- Include two verses or more
- Include a chorus that repeats twice or more
- Include a bridge
- Be at least 250 words long.

Some resources for approaching this activity are available (here*) if you wish to use them. Good luck and happy songwriting!

Example Chorus:
Flower: Foxglove
Meaning: treachery
Chorus:
And I will paint this marble floor in all the colours you outcast me for
I’ll take this victory between my teeth, and I’ll grin all the more
You thought you’d seen the last of me? So dastardly, you barred the doors
I’m sorry, I still hold the key; my foxgloves nimbler than yours.

Conclusion (written by Zaine)

To earn 2500 points for your cabin, you must comment in the Main Cabin with proof of:
- 400 words from an interview transcript with a partner, with at least 200 words written by you
- a monologue written with a partner, with at least 300 words written by you
- a spoken word poem, minimum of 3 minutes long
- a song based on Alba's flower project with at least two verses, a chorus repeated at least twice, a bridge, and at least 250 words long

Comment in the Main Cabin by November 15th, 11:59 PM UTC to earn points! We will not count late weeklies.

Good luck and have fun!

Special thanks to Luna for helping plan this weekly, Zaine for compiling and organizing this weekly, and all of the above-mentioned writers and workshop creators for their hard work in delivering this weekly!

I have a question: Can you do just one of the spoken forms of writing, or do you have to do all of them?

2500 points
400 words from an interview transcript with a partner, with at least 200 words written by you

monologue written with a partner, with at least 300 words written by you

Raya: Are you a sky monster invader; and why are you or why would you want to be one?
Soki: Honestly? I'm not sure what a sky master invader really is. Which leads me to think I'm probably not one? And whether or not I would want to be one probably depends on where I'm invading.
Raya: All right A lot of questions coming. I'm in interviewing mode *flips down torch mask*. When you write in first person, how do you get into the mode of the character? Could you give an example? Has it ever felt odd writing in that character's perspective?
Soki: I write in first person almost always. I find it much easier to get into the thoughts and feelings of the characters, which is probably the most important aspect of my writing style, in first person rather than second or third person. Before I begin writing in a character’s perspective for the first time, whether the character is my own or someone else’s, I always want to make sure I know as much as I can about what makes this character think, talk, and behave the way they do. This includes their age, gender, who their family and friends are and whether their relationships are positive and healthy, favourite hobbies, cultural background, past experiences, what they do/want to do for a living, and so on. It definitely sometimes feels weird to start writing as a certain character, but that just means I don’t have a good grasp on exactly who the character is yet.
Raya: Neat! Like you /are/ the character. *shift* All right, last question - unless of course you'd like to continue on after this ^^ What is your thought process while planning for a story or chapter? Or do you consider yourself a pantser?
Soki: My thought process is pretty much chaos. I basically brainstorm anything that could possibly happen and then pick and choose which actually make sense. But I often don’t quite follow my plans when I’m writing so there’s usually a bunch of little differences between my plan and the final project.
Raya: I'm assuming you've read the Harry Potter series or know about it, what house are you in? Do you think you suit that house well? I have a strong feeling you're a Ravenclaw; definitely not basing it on your username. Do you relate to a certain character or characters?
Soki:
Raya: Nice, thank you, that's a wrap!
*they switch seats and Soki starts interviewing Raya*
Soki: What environment do you find it easiest to write in?
Raya:

I have a question about interviews: Do you mean at least 200 words from one person in one interview, and at least 200 more from the other person in the other interview?

What is your favorite hobby/most common one that you do?
My favorite hobby is playing video games. I play video games a lot and it’s very fun.

Which video game is your favorite?
My favorite video game is osu!. Osu is a rhythm game where I can make it to leaderboards and maybe real-life competitions.

What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy calling friends and listening to music.

What’s your favorite song?
My favorite song is Wither by Takayan.

Which music streaming website/app do you use?
Spotify because it allows me to download songs and listen to billions of songs on the platform.

I hear you watch anime, which is your favorite?
I don’t have a favorite anime but I currently really like chainsaw man.

How long have you been doing these hobbies?
For about 4 years.

I also hear that you love calling friends, how many friends, and are they close to you? (You know them in real life)
I have about 200+ friends online and in real-life combined. I don’t keep count. I usually call with ones I know in real life. Most of them go to my school but are older than me so we don’t see each other much.

Have you ever met a friend online in real life? If not, do you plan to?
No, I haven’t because I am busy a lot during the times I’m free. I plan to meet someone but her parents don’t allow me to and she lives on an island in Hawaii.

How did you meet these online friends?
Usually in video games where you can communicate with one another.

In which video game did you meet the most online friends?
Roblox, because I enjoy socializing and making quite a lot of friends.

Have you ever combined all these hobbies? (Voice-chatting with friends, while listening to music with them, or playing a game?)
Yup, sometimes usually with my friends rin, or mason, sometimes both.
Do the two friends you listed above, do you know them in real life or online?
In real-life.

Which game on Roblox do you enjoy most?
The game I enjoy most on Roblox is super doomspire and arsenal. Super doomspire is a PVP game where you can fight against other teams by knocking down their tower.
Arsenal is an FPS game where you shoot enemies.

239 words for Zack's answers <3

Zack interviews me:

What are your favorite hobbies?
Drawing, it’s really relaxing ^^

What do you like about drawing? What do you do in this hobby?
I really like that it’s relaxing, and that it stretches my creativity. I can pretty much create whatever I want with a piece of paper. I draw in this hobby.

Things you like to do in your freetime?
Find videos on pinterest so I can weird my friends out, draw, study, read, play my instrument, or message my friends.

Other hobbies you enjoy?
Hanging out with my siblings.

What do you like about hanging out with your siblings?
That I have people to talk to, and they can be fun, but sometimes annoying.

(What your hobby is) What do you do?
Mostly do whatever my sister wants to, art contests, roleplay, whatever really.

Do you enjoy school or not? Why or why not?
I enjoy robotics and band, but otherwise, learning is boring. The only core subject I enjoy is english because all my friends are in it.

Favorite subject in school?
Band! I love playing my instrument and talking to my friends in that class.

Do you draw in class?
In class I doodle in the margins of my notebook and talk to friends.

Dream college? Why?
Probably UCLA, Brown, or Berkely, these are all Ivy League schools, and they offer an amazing education opportunity. It’s kinda funny because college week is starting tomorrow, wearing a Brown shirt for that. But my most favored college is probably Berkeley. My cousin goes there, and she’s awfully smart.

Dream job?
Being a doctor, I hear they make good money, and it’s also my dream job because I would really like to help people. But if I had to choose an area in hospitalization, I would probably choose being a pediatrician , which is a kids doctor.
