Weekly 2: Learn to write Imagery
JWC 2022
Hello, awesome JWCers! Welcome to the 2nd weekly! You will be learning how to use imagery to write descriptive scenes.
But first, what is imagery?
Imagery is when you use the senses to describe something and make the reader aware of what it feels like. Imagery uses the five senses:
- Visual = Sight
~Example: The sun rose above the clouds, its light peeking out and shining on her face, like a halo specifically for her.
- Auditory = Hearing
~Example: The crunch of footsteps in the snow met my ears, and I froze.
- Olfactory = Smell
~Example: I poured the vanilla into the mixing bowl, its sharp, sweet smell filling the air.
- Gustatory = Taste
~Example: The buttery flavor of the croissant was heavenly.
- Tactile = Touch
~Example: I brushed my hand along the thick wooden table, its textured surface worn with age.
Now that you know what imagery is, it's your turn to give it a try!
Part 1:
For this part, you have two options to choose from.
Option 1. Write two sentences for each type of imagery. (Eg. two sentences using Visual, two sentences using Auditory, etc.) No word minimum, but try to make the sentences unique. This is for you to learn how to write each type of imagery.
Option 2. Journal about what you have learned about imagery and the senses. What are your favorite senses? Do you think you write imagery well? Journal 300 words about imagery.
Part 2:
Write a scene using two of the different senses. Try to make sure to focus on the little details, without making it too full of descriptions. Yes, this is a fine line, but you can find it with practice. This scene requires that you use your two favorite senses and a 600-word minimum.
Part 3:
Now that you have more experience with imagery, it's time to expand on it. Write a new 800-word short story (or part of one) using all of the senses, but specifically focus on one that you like best. Use the senses to bring an intriguing perspective towards what you are describing. Have fun!
In summary, to earn the points you must:
Complete part 1 with either of the two options.
Complete part 2 with a 600-word scene using two senses.
And
Complete Part 3 with a 800-word short story (or part of one) using all of the senses.
If completed, you will earn 5,000 points for your cabin! Remember to show proof and happy writing! <3
