Chapter 1

Munchkin was once again trying her best not to be an overly cautious furball. That plan wasn’t working too well. She tentatively and reluctantly followed her twin brother Maroon, and her older cousin Leaf out of their home, which was a simple wooden house with some fancy-ish draperies over the windows, and the house’s outside was colored with a soft purple paint.

“Come on Munchkin!” Maroon purred impatiently. He was a very dark red tomcat with lighter reddish paws that were desaturated, and matched the color of his tail-tip. He had two-toned red ears and hindquarters. “We should go to the forest!” Despite the two of them being twins, they were nothing alike, and she was easily only two-thirds of his height, although neither of them was quite as tall as Leaf, who was around the height of an adult cat.

“I’m not 100% sure I like that idea.” Leaf frowned. He was a light pale green cat with a darker slash marking on his chest. He had other markings on his green-gray face, front limbs, and tail.

“Come on Leaf! It’ll be fun!” Maroon laughed, his pale blue eyes twinkling eagerly. “Who knows what we might find!”

“That is my very objection!” Munchkin glanced at Maroon. “Sure we might find something cool, but what are the ch-”

“You’re such a spoilsport!” Maroon complained, interrupting his sister. “Seriously, I’ve told you both several times that you don’t need to come with me on all of my adventures!”

“We know!” Leaf snarled. “But you are literally insane if you think you’re going into that forest alone! Especially because we don’t know what’s there!”

Leaf and Maroon continued arguing as Munchkin took a glance around the desolate pathway. There was some grass sprouting from in between some rocks on the walkway every now and then, but it was mostly a dirt path, which was wet with the previous night’s rain.

There were some trees scattered around the walkway the three children were walking along. The bark of some of these trees was rough and had claw marks on them. The leaves above them shimmered with sunlight and were different hues of red, orange, yellow and green. Munchkin observed that the closer they got to the forest, the greener the leaves were. She didn’t really want to be here, but no way was Maroon going without her! What if he got hurt, or otherwise needed help? What if I’m not there when he does?

She also felt bad about leaving Magenta, her father, Leaf’s uncle, without telling him they were leaving. He’s going to be so worried! The only reason we got away at all is because he was sleeping after yet another attempt to get the king to visit our village, or more specifically get him and his family to visit us for dinner, I think.

King Sweetie was the king of the nearest kingdom, the Kingdom of Sugar. It was the closest to Munchkin’s village, Norminaily Village, which was often considered part of the latter.

He ruled the kingdom alongside his wife, Queen Candy, his sister, Princess Minti, and his own children, Princess Anemone, and Prince Caramel. There were a few rumors circulating about how . . . fishy Princess Anemone was, although Munchkin never took them seriously. Considering we live in a world with various candy colored creatures of all different features, she can’t be that bad.

But, as Magenta didn’t seem to be getting anywhere in his attempts to win the king over, Munchkin figured she’d never know for sure.

“Munchkin!” Leaf called. “Come on!” Munchkin looked up, startled. Leaf and Maroon must have stopped bickering while she was caught in her own thoughts.

“Oh!” she yelped. “Sorry!” Munchkin dashed to catch up with her companions.

It was a quiet day today. The only noises she could pick up that weren’t somehow related to her or her family was the quiet sound of a gentle breeze, which made Munchkin shudder slightly. There was only a singular cloud in the sky.

Soon, they reached the edge of the forest. Now their path was littered with various gnarled roots of old trees, and the trio had to be careful not to trip, Munchkin even more so.

She noticed the sort of peaceful tranquility of the forest, and her mind immediately drifted to how relaxing the aura of the venue was. It made her a little less tense.

She listened to the sound of footsteps, as they all followed a semi-uniform rhythm.

Eventually, after a few minutes of following the trail, it opened out into a large clearing where small fireflies were flitting around, their lights blinking in a visually pleasing way, in all sorts of colors and frequencies.

There were half a dozen trees arranged in a semi-circle. Each of them had blossoms in varying colors. Six trees, each with differently colored flowers.

All six of them were larger than the trees in the rest of the forest, but they had variations in size, but all of them were gorgeous.

She found herself mesmerized by the natural beauty of the clearing, and then she noticed the flowers growing at the base of each tree.

“Hey Munchkin.” Maroon whispered, tugging her out of her thought train. “That tree over there has flowers the same color as your eyes.” Maroon pointed towards the smallest of the six budded trees, which had dark pink blooms riddled throughout the branches.

He’s right. Why are they the same color as my eyes? Munchkin asked herself, her curiosity peeking out for a brief moment. That can’t be natural.
Munchkin decided to take a look at the flowers on all of the flowered trees. The first tree had flowers that reminded Munchkin of what she thought deep in the ocean would look like, a dark blue.

The second also had blue blossoms, but they were extremely dark blue, and hard to distinguish from black.
The third had startlingly yellow blooms that were dappled with red, and she once again found herself wondering about them as she focused her gaze on the fifth tree, having skipped over the one Maroon pointed out to her, finding that situation too strange to be a coincidence.

This fifth tree had beautiful purple and brown flowers, colors Munchkin didn’t normally think would work well together, but surprisingly did. The last tree had bright pale blue flowers, similar to what Maroon’s eyes looked like, except more blue.

She sat for a moment, as she watched Maroon and Leaf examining the flowers under each of the trees. What do these trees represent? I mean they’re like this for a reason . . . right?

“Munchkin!” Leaf called, ripping Munchkin back into reality. “We may have discovered something that you might like to see.”
Munchkin glanced in his direction, and saw he was still looking at the flowers. He was sitting around the fourth tree, the one that - for some reason - had flowers the same color as Munchkin’s eyes.

“Look at the flowers under the tree.” Leaf instructed as she drew closer to the base of the tree, her eyes widening as she looked from them to Maroon and Leaf.

The flowers were beautiful of course, but it was the colors that surprised her. There were three different ones that she identified. The first was pale blue, like Maroon’s eyes, the second with Leaf’s light grayish-green, and a third, with Magenta’s own purple eyes.

The look of shock on her face must have been obvious, as Leaf commented on it. “I know right!” he smiled. “It’s weird, but it’s pretty cool.”

“There has to be a reason for it though.” Munchkin frowned, putting her paw under a purple flower. “There is absolutely no way this is natural.”
Leaf nodded, and Maroon chuckled. Munchkin glanced up to see if she could pinpoint what was making him do so.

He was now standing under the fifth and sixth trees, and Leaf also looked over, curiosity written on his face.

“Say that these trees represent other cats or whatnot.” he meowed. “And the flowers underneath, those they care about.” He paused, pointing at the fourth tree. “Like say that tree represents Munchkin, and the flowers under it are supposed to be Magenta, Leaf, and I.” He paused, letting his theory sink into Munchkin’s mind. She thought it made sense, so she nodded.

“For whatever strange reason, it’s the eye colors of said other cats and whatnot.” Maroon continued. “Anyway, that makes enough sense to me, so I’m going to explain who I think these fifth and sixth trees are supposed to represent.”

Now, Munchkin was actually quite curious, so she stepped forward.

“Both of these trees have similar flower layouts, with a few small variations, which leads me to believe the two are somehow related.” Maroon flashed Munchkin a smile before continuing.

“Now, there are two flowers that give this away, and I know what you’re thinking. ‘Everyone cares about them.’ Still, I think my point is valid.” Maroon paused. “These pink and blue ones, and those green ones. Why? Because those are the same eye colors as King Sweetie and Queen Candy. Who else cares for the King and Queen like you care about us, and are also related?”

Leaf was watching intently, but it was Munchkin who found herself answering Maroon’s question.
“Prince Caramel and Princess Anemone!” she gasped, and Maroon nodded.

“Neither have any pictures in the books because the King doesn’t want them out and about, so I can’t say for certain, but they have each other’s flowers in the patches, and the King and Queen do have pictures in our books, and the eyes match.” Maroon’s voice went a little bit faster, but Munchkin still picked up on every last word.

“So, say this tree here with the purple and brown flowers is Caramel, and the one with the blue is Anemone, because that makes sense to me.” Maroon motioned for the two of them to come closer. “In that case, I need you to see this.”

Maroon pointed out the flowers underneath Caramel’s apparent tree, which were predominantly the blue, pink and blue, and green flowers, with small amounts of various other ones. She didn’t notice anything unusual until Maroon gently pulled apart some of the flowers to reveal other ones.
Munchkin gasped, putting her paws up to her mouth, and the look on Leaf’s face betrayed any shock he might be feeling.

“I know I know.” Maroon grinned. “It surprised me too at first.”

Munchkin was at a complete loss for words. T-That’s a little surprising. No, a lot surprising, but it just can’t be. That’s not possible. Not possible at all. I-It’s enough of a surprise th-that . . . th-that. . . How could this possibly be?

The small flowers, the ones hiding under the others below the ‘Caramel tree’ matched the ones on the fourth tree.

The tree that represented Munchkin herself.

Chapter 2

Prince Caramel had gone three days without trying to get back to the beautiful forest clearing on the other side of Norminaily Village. Now, he wanted back.

King Sweetie nor Queen Candy had any ideas about the ventures he and Princess Anemone had tackled into said clearing.

However, last time he had gone, he could have sworn he saw someone watching him, which bothered him a little bit, but wasn’t a deterrent.

Mostly, he wanted to see if that girl was there. He had no clue if she knew where the clearing was located, nor did he know her name. He did know that she had a brother and a cousin, locals were helpful for that sort of information. Caramel was also pretty sure it was her father, Magenta, wasn’t it, that was trying to persuade his dad to come out to the village in the near future.

She was small, but Caramel wanted to snuggle in her fur until he melted, and her eyes were a beautiful dark color, like if someone took the pink hues in a sunset, but made them darker. Caramel adjusted his berry crown as his train of thought shifted from the villager girl to his sister Anemone, and where she was currently located.

She was probably near that one room on the ground floor of the castle, the one that had that giant fish tank in the floor that was connected to the nearby Syrupstaff river.

Anemone loved that room, even if neither of them could explain why. Though I will admit, it is a rather pretty room. The fish that end up in there are so pretty.

Caramel made his way to said fish tank room and he did in fact find Anemone.

“Anemone!” Caramel meowed to her. She looked up in his direction. Anemone was a beautiful pink and blue she-cat with patterned pink and blue paws. Her underbelly and chest were a paler pink, and she had four identical tails, the tips being pink with blue stripes. She had various other markings on her head and body. She had limbs that were on the longer side, and a pink dash on her forehead.

“Yes Caramel?” Anemone purred. Caramel was reminded of a beach, or really any large body of water, as her voice held the same potential to be relaxing.

“I wanted to go back to the forest!” Caramel yawned. “Do you want to come?” He walked closer to her, giving her a smile as he approached.

“Absolutely!” Anemone laughed. “I love that place! It’s so beautiful and indescribable at the same time!”

Caramel silently agreed, smiling some more. I really hope that girl is there. She’s pretty, not like the other girls Dad points out to me sometimes. Could she even be a princess? Would she even want to? Is she allowed to? What am I thinking? Caramel! Stop thinking about her for a moment!
“What’s Dad doing right now?” Caramel inquired, with the hope that she knew.

“I think he’s touring a bakery or something,” Anemone blinked, Caramel noticed she looked a little bit tired. “He’ll be in town for a little while. With any luck, the part of town where we’re not going to be going. The fish told me.” she purred.

“The fish told you?” Caramel asked with a quizzical expression.

She nodded with a small smile. “Shall we go brother?”

Caramel was slightly disturbed by the fact that his sister was supposedly talking to fish, but he brushed it off. That wasn’t his biggest issue right now. “Yes . . . ?”

“Hooray!” Anemone laughed.

They exited the fish tank room and bumped into Cherry, one of the king’s assistants. He was a brown and red cat with reddish eyes and white X’s for pupils. He had a long red fish tail, and had markings that made him look like he was wearing red socks.

“Oh!” Cherry exclaimed. “My apologies to my dear prince and princess.”

“It’s fine.” Caramel waved off his apology. “It was our fault.” He turned to follow Anemone, who was slowly inching past him.

“Where are you two going?” Cherry asked as he noticed Anemone moving away from him.

“Anemone wanted to take a walk along the Syrupstaff river. We’d be gone for a bit, but we’d be careful, and we’d be back before nightfall.” Caramel fixed up a story for Cherry. Anemone nodded, affirming the partial lie. The Syrupstaff river did eventually flow into the forest. It was how the two of them had discovered the forest, and a path to the clearing in the first place. It wasn’t the reason they were going there, but it was still how they were getting there.

I seriously hope that girl is there. I wish I knew her name. Caramel shook his head aggressively. Stop thinking about her! But she’s the reason we’re going there! She’s not the only reason! So you admit that she’s a reason!

Caramel shuddered inwardly as he and Anemone passed Cherry, who thankfully let them be. His thoughts shifted back to Anemone as he remembered that she had told him about how the fish had told her about Dad moments earlier. That the fish were talking to her altogether. Fish don’t talk to ordinary cats! But then again. . . I don’t suppose she’s an ordinary cat is she? She has four tails! That’s definitely not normal!

Caramel didn’t know what was wrong with his sister. Nor was he going to ask her that. It just felt wrong, both as a royal, and as family. All he knew was that he loved her anyway, no matter how strange she was.

Soon they reached the castle’s entrance, and quickly located the Syrupstaff river. Caramel was both thankful for, and disappointed in the lack of any actual guards around the castle. The only one there being a dog named Red, who just barked at them with acknowledgement as they passed.
Today the water was clear and cold, a little fast, but also gentle at the same time. Anemone walked on the edge of the riverbank, purring as the water splashed her fur. Caramel walked a foot or two to her right, but water ended up on him anyway. It was always enough to make his fur feel wet, but never enough to completely soak him. It was really annoying.

The two cats walked along until they reached a pathway into the forest. It was just as beautiful now as it had been days ago, and Caramel still found himself mesmerized. It looked slightly darker than it had been the last time he was here, there was just a little less light, but it was a change that was barely noticeable to Caramel’s eyes, the left one brown, the right one purple.

“I smell other cats.” Anemone whispered after they had been going for a short while.

Caramel nodded as cat-scent filled his nose. It was familiar, but barely. Could it be? Shut up! Caramel shook his head hard enough to make himself momentarily dizzy.

Anemone noticed this and chuckled slightly. “You alright brother?”

Caramel told her he was fine even though he didn’t really believe that.

After a couple minutes, they finally arrived. A dark red tomcat was the closest to them, while a greenish gray tom and a pink she-cat were further back.

It is them! Caramel’s mind was filled with joy as he recognized the pelts or the cats he would pass by in the village when he was walking around there.

This dark red cat was the first one to notice the prince and princess, and his ears shot up. “Hello!” he smiled and Caramel was briefly reminded of how Anemone would greet people when she met them. “I’m Maroon!”

He paused for a moment. “You must be the prince and princess! Welcome! The tall green cat over there is my cousin Leaf, and that tiny she-cat over there is my sister Munchkin. We’re twins, even though we definitely don’t look it.” Maroon shrugged, but Caramel looked past him, finding himself glancing at Munchkin as she walked over without looking at them. Leaf followed suit, noticing who they were much more quickly than Maroon had, and stumbled into a bow behind the two siblings.

“Maroon,” Munchkin began as she looked at Maroon. “What did I say about talking to ra-” her voice broke off as her head turned towards the newcomers. “Princess Anemone! Prince Caramel!” she jumped backwards in surprise, landing on Leaf’s muzzle, as he was still bowing to them.
She got off of Leaf and gently bowed, both her and Leaf getting up afterwards. “Sorry, I wasn't expecting to see you here.” Or at all. The expression on her face seemed to be saying.

Something’s bothering her. Caramel observed as she shifted her paws around nervously while she was sitting down. Now that all three of them were in a line together, he noticed that Munchkin was easily barely half of Leaf’s size, while she was around two-thirds of Maroon’s. Yikes, she's a little small. Her parents named her accurately, clearly they weren’t feeling very creative with her and her brother.

It was a very awkward few minutes where nobody said anything before Caramel noticed two catlike creatures entering from the opposite side of the clearing.

Maroon noticed them too, and ran over before anyone could say anything, and before Caramel could get a good look at them either. Anemone bounded in their direction, and the other three walked over.

“Oh come on.” A weird looking red cat complained. They were pretty much laying on the other one. They were pink, but lighter than Munchkin, with red forelegs, and a dark red face with pink and red ears. One had the top taken off, while the other had slashes in it. They didn’t have any hind legs, and their tail was a pink and red fish tail. “Well, since I suppose you’ve introduced yourselves, I should introduce us.” Maroon already told them who we are? Yeesh.

Caramel noticed their startling lack of a right eye, which had red scratches over it. and they had some scratches on their cheek. They also had a yellow flower on their head. Their remaining eye was the same yellow. “I’m Bloodbath. Don’t ask about the name, I’d rather not talk about it, and please, please, please use they/them pronouns for me, nobody does and it’s the most annoying thing in the world.”

Caramel nodded as they put a hand on their companion’s head. “This dude here is Light. He’s the guy who brought me here.” Light nodded as they let Bloodbath down.

Now that Caramel had a good look at Light, he saw that he was much more catlike than Bloodbath was. He was a dark grayish color with gentle navy blue eyes. He had dark red horns on his head, and had dragonlike wings of the same color on his back, the membranes being a bright red color. He had a weird pointed triangle thing on his tail.

“Nice to meet both of you!” Maroon laughed.

“Maroon, what did I say about introducing yourself to random strangers?” Munchkin asked, her eyes immediately darting to Bloodbath and Light. “No offense.”

“None taken.” Bloodbath grunted.

“Isn’t this place so beautiful?” Anemone asked as Bloodbath and Light took a glance around the clearing.

“Yeah,” Bloodbath raised a paw up as though to brush the leaves they couldn’t reach. “It actually is.”

Munchkin drifted over to the semicircle of trees, Caramel backed up a little bit and noticed the six trees. The first tree had flowers oddly the color of Light’s eyes. The second one had dark and deep blue flowers, but he didn’t know anyone with eyes that matched. The third has flowers with a base color of Bloodbath’s yellow eye, and had dapples of red, the colors of their scars, which looked beautiful, even if the colors contrasted themselves a little bit. The fourth was the one Munchkin was sitting next to, and the blossoms on it were the color of her eyes, which was a little bit strange. The fifth tree was the one that surprised him the most. It had purple and brown flowers, which Caramel definitely thought was a little bit odd. Like the colors on the third tree, they melded together beautifully. The sixth and last one had bright blue flowers, like Anemone’s eye color.

“Maroon, Leaf!” Munchkin exclaimed. “We should go home! Magenta will be worried sick!”

Maroon sighed. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

Munchkin, Maroon, and Leaf said a quick goodbye before they left, and Caramel walked up to Anemone. “We should probably go too.”
Anemone nodded reluctantly, meowing a goodbye to Bloodbath and Light before they left, taking the path they had used to get here, Anemone leading, and Caramel behind her.

Well, that was an eventful little while. Caramel glanced back behind him. But the trees have to mean something. It’s not possible for five of the cat . . . creatures here to all have eyes the same color as a handful of trees in a random forest
. He paused. I suppose the maps refer to it as the “Magic Forest” for a reason.

Caramel didn’t really know anything about that. He did however know her name now.

Munchkin.

It really was a fitting name.

The tree that represented Munchkin h

Munchkin.

It really was a fitting name.

love this! but it would be great if you added more “show not tell” if you know what I mean? Like instead of describing the characters, you could add small clues of their appearances instead of describing them head on. also make sure add little scenes that show the character’s unique personalities and to make the readers attached to the characters i like the story so far, keep writing!

stood on the cliffside screaming, “give me a reason”
