Remove "Save to your computer" from File Drop-Down if Project is Not Owned by You

Remove the “Save to your computer” button from the File drop-down if the project is not owned by you. This button makes it incredibly easy to copy projects, and if my suggestion is implemented the number of copied projects will decrease.

A number of people have been saying that the button is helpful if the remix button is not working.

Well, that's what the backpack is for

I agree with this, it shouldn't be that easy to steal projects. They should either remove this button, or replace it with a remix button.

I don't think it will make a difference, as you can just remix and then save as a copy.

But if you're saving a copy of the remix, doesn't it remember that it's a remix?

Even with extensions disabled, save as copy doesn't exist on projects you don't own. It just gets replaced with “Remix.”

For “Save to your computer” it should work like Scratch 1.4, where if you re-upload it, it counts as a remix. Although, you could just remix it first.

Support, this will stop a few cases of project stealing, we should add a remix tag to remixed projects you own as well to protect against most project thieves.

Support, definitely could prevent people from stealing projects.

True, but if you do make the project a remix people will be able to see it wasn’t originally yours and be able to report it.

Maybe the ST could add an internal project ID to a project which is always linked to the file no matter what, and when you upload a project derived from the original project it’ll link the original project or something…. Ugh idk how to explain. But like, when you download a project it’ll always have the original creator connected to it so when you upload it again the site will know that it’s based upon another project.

Support. It would be wrong to steal others' projects. Doing this should count as remixing.

Besides, if a project is not owned by you, there is a clearly visible ‘remix’ button.

easy workaround: just remix the project and download it from there, technically the remix (in the system’s eyes) is yours and it would just be annoying if you couldn’t download a remix (imagine if someone had a very big remix of a project and it was incredibly hard to work with on the online editor, if the system doesn’t allow you to download remixes then you’re just screwed) oh wait you’re suggesting something different

Support!
Even though there is a workaround, it would help discourage stolen projects.

There should be some kind of code that recognizes someone is copying a remix, if this were to be implemented.

However, the tricky part is that the code would somehow have to read the project in a way in order to clarify it's a remix and not your own project.

Support! Since there is ‘remix’ function already, banning save to my computer in projects that are not owned by user won't discourage anything.

No, they should not remove the button, instead they should add code to the project.json that tells you who created it. Then if someone copies, the website will read that and it will still show as a remix. This would solve everything

It would also have “original creator” code and “remixer” code. This would mean it would always show as a remix, even if you remixed and then copied

Why should they not remove the button? It serves no purpose if it is someone else's project.
