Actual Story | Word Count: 712

The realms of Fruitland and Vegetania have been at war for millenia. But as time evolved, so did the world. Now, in a much more modern day, humans of both realms have learned to harness supernatural powers from within. And those with the courage to use it fight for their world in the rage of battle…

“I can’t believe he’s sleeping at a time like this.”
“Is he even sleeping…?”
“What are you implying, Mel?”
“I’m just saying, death is a natural part of life.”
“MEL!”

Mango lifted his head from his desk, his green eyes fluttering open. “Eh? Who’s dying?”

His best friend Cue rumpled his golden hair. “You, ya bean. How can you possibly sleep right now?”

Mango shrugged. “Stress-sleeping, I guess.” He remembered the current situation they were in. “Any updates from the battle?”

His other bestie, Mel, shook her head, her pointed ears poking out of her wild pink hair. “And stress-sleeping isn’t even a thing.”

“It’s a thing if I say it is!” Mango squeaked indignantly. Mel scoffed and rolled her eyes, leaning back and crossing her arms. “Yeah, whatever.”

Before Mango could say another word, the door flew open and all the students fell silent. A tall, short haired woman walked in, with a dark purple boyish haircut and piercing stare.

“The battle isn’t faring too well,” Principal Pome stated. “Our fighters are reaching their limit.” The students murmured anxiously amongst themselves. Mango gazed around the underground classroom. It had been so normal a few days ago, until the Vegetation Army attacked his school and sent them into evacuation. Mango felt like he hadn’t seen his family in forever…or if he would ever see them again.

Cue raised their hand. “Why don’t you just send us, Pome?” they stated. Principal Pome raised her eyebrows. “That’s Miss Pome to you, Mx. Cue.”

Cue waved their hand carelessly. “Yeah, yeah, sorry Miss Pome. But the whole point of this school was to teach us to hone our powers. What better way to do that than in the field?”

“Maybe a way where our lives aren’t at risk,” Mel muttered. “I for one, agree with Cue,” Mango piped up. Mel crossed her arms stubbornly. “I don’t risk my life for anyone but myself.”

“Then why are you even here in the first place?” Cue asked. “I know you won’t just let me and Mango go on our own. You act like you don’t care, but you secretly do. So come on. Do something, for once in your life.”

Mel’s emerald green eyes darted between Mango and Cue. She looked back up at Principal Pome. “We don’t have permission to go.”

“Send us,” Mango begged. “The Mangoe Isles are my home- I don’t want to be useless.”

The rest of the student nodded in agreement. “I think they should go,” one of the kids piped up. “They’ve always been the top students in our class.”

“And their powers would be really useful against the Vegetation Army,” another pointed out.

“Not to mention that Mango probably knows his homeland better than the rest of us,” a third one added.

Mango felt a confident smile spread across his face. “I think we can do this!” he said cheerfully. “The three of us will be able to help in any way we can- strategy, combat; we can do it all together.”

Principal Pome’s frown deepened as she looked at the three of them. “What are your abilities?”

Mango held up his hand, which sparked with golden electricity. “I can control lightning,” he offered. “It gets a bit out of control at times, and I do electrocute myself from time to time…but I’m pretty good at strategy, too!”

Mel reached her hand out lazily and lifted a pencil. “I have telekinesis,” she said monotonously. “It’s useful in attacks, I guess.”

Cue snatched the pencil from midair, blowing a thick layer of ice around it. “Freeze breath,” they said with a grin. “Not to mention, I’m the pure embodiment of pranks and chaos.”

“That I can confirm,” Pome mumbled with a sigh. “Fine. Take one of the teachers with you- and be careful.”

Mango smiled at his friends. They were going to help defend Fruitland and the Mangoe Isles. They were going to be heroes!
