500x500 is so small!!!!! Most of the time people can't even read the text on them….. Maybe make it 1000x1000 or 1250x1250 and maybe enlarge the box a bit????? That might be able to have small text be more readable on PFPs….. It would also help report inappropriate PFPs a little better because small text with inappropriate phrases on old PFPs would get enlarged to a readable size as well…..

Somewhat support. I think the profile pictures are a good size already, and a profile picture is more of a picture, as per the definition — I don't think words are necessary to put in, and in the case of the username, we can just read the username right next to the profile picture. Again, though, I see no benefits or downsides to this.
i was tired and just copied and pasted this from something @Za-Chary said, because when I tried to word it, it sounded awful. thanks Za-Chary

Some PFP’s have words in them but they’re really hard to read though.

Why? PFPs are everywhere really small. In the forums they are probably the biggest and here it's like 200x200. That the PFP itself is 500x500 is almost overkill.

Support! I think to expand on this topic, we could also have similar boundaries for Studio thumbnails!

500x500 is actually pretty big, taking up about one eighth of a 1920x1080 monitor. I do agree that Scratch shouldn't lower the quality so terribly, but other than that PFPs on the rest of the site are fine the size they are.
There is a way to get yourself a high-resolution profile picture like I have, though.

No support. As you can see, my PFP has a few words, but I don't want anyone to read it. I wanted people to focus on my projects, and not my PFP, but it's a part of my logo, so I kept it.
If you can read it, it says, Master of Most.

1. Go to a GIF-creating website like ezgifThere is a way to get yourself a high-resolution profile picture like I have, though. How?
2. Upload your profile picture as a frame
3. Duplicate the frame (it will not work if you don't do this)
4. Download the finished gif
5. Set it as your profile picture

i used this technique too, because mine is pixel art and doesnt look very well when its upscaled from a low res (im normally zoomed in on my computer, plus it helps on high-dpi screens). i used gimp and gave the second frame a slight offset to make it look like im hovering up and down in the image though :31. edit: apparently the file name is still a “(userid)_90x90.png” (for example) when it gets uploaded to scratch, but the served image is a non-resized gif (245x245 in my case!)

In practical use, the profile picture is downscaled to 32, 60, or 90 pixels across and tall, so your profile picture should at least be recognizable in 60 pixels.

It's even 90x90 in the forums, didn't expect that. Even if you upscale it to 300%, it's still only 270x270. That's more then enough.

I've observed that pretty interesting trick, though GIFs are limited in the color space (you can tell when you get a close up of your pfp that there's a decent amount of dithering going on).1. As for OP's suggestion, I don't see a need to increase the max resolution that you can have your pfp at since all the images of it are far smaller than 500x500 on the website - the site would have to be designed with much larger user icons for me to see a benefit in having larger pfp images.

The quality on profile pictures can be pretty terrible sometimes. I'd support increasing the scale a little.
