Does the Micro:bit work for you under Scratch 3.0?

I've tried connecting my microbit to the Scratch 3 extension and have not had any luck. Scratch 3 seems to find my install of “Scratchlink” and my Windows 10 laptop connects via bluetooth to the microbit. The hex file transferred okay and the microbit spelled out it's name and showed a check mark (but I don't know what it is supposed to show). However, the Scratch extension pop-up just shows no devices found. Has anyone tried using it?

My browser / operating system: Windows NT 10.0, Chrome 67.0.3396.99, Flash 30.0 (release 0)

Have either of you seen any complaints since Friday (July 20th)? I've looked and did not spot any. That date is important because that's the first date that that the Scratchlink program was available on the Scratch web site. I think anyone trying it before then must have experimenting with what they found in the developer areas in Github.

Maybe a scratchlink error

It works for me.
Downloaded the hex file to the micro:bit. Installed Scratch Link and connected via the Scratch 3.0 interface. No worries at all.

One thing I noticed; Using Goggle Chrome and when I activate another tab the connection is lost although when I get back to the Scatch 3.0 tab it´s connected again and working.

Can the Microbit be used with Scratch 3.0 on a Chromebook?

Sorry but I have not seen any Scratch team comments about Chromebook and microbit. I'd like to use it with my iPad but I haven't heard anything about it either. However their Scratchlink code is in a private developer area so maybe there are things in there that we just can't see but could help.

Does the Micro:bit work for you under Scratch 3.0?

I have tried lots of time in different browsers and couple of different computers and different micro:bits but I have never been able to connect. I always get the message “No Devices Found”.

The instructions are pretty simple… but it just isn't working for me. Can't help thinking something is missing.

Did you get it to work in the end Mr-Dave?

Sorry no. It does work with Scratch 2.0 using the microbit ScratchX extension and a different bluetooth dongle . Therefore I don't think the problem is with my microbit. I suspect it's the new dongle (the new one is made by Pluggable). Maybe it would work with a different brand or maybe it only works if the bluetooth is an internal to the laptop type. My Windows 10 shows a bluetooth connection between the microbit and my new dongle but Scratch 3.0/Scratchlink does not see it.

Sorry that I could not help.

Hi everybody,

I was able to connect the micro:bit to Scratch 3.0 and made a few projects. The jump feature is fun, although it doesn't detect every jump. However, it didn't work as good the second time I wanted to use it. I don't know how to turn Scratch Link on. Does anyone know whether it should start-up by itself when you put on your laptop? I've installed the software yesterday, but I can't find anymore …

Hi Mr-Dave,

I don't know what the check mark is supposed to show, but it didn't appear on my micro:bit when I managed to make a connection. Then it only spelled out its name.

Greetings,

PinkyPepper

After installing it I found the scratchlink.exe file at C:\Program Files (x86)\Scratch Link\ScratchLink.exe and had to start it manually from that location.

Thanks for the feedback. There is another topic about the microbit in the Scratch 3 Beta forum. In the other topic designerd* said the problem might be with my Bluetooth dongle but that they would be doing more testing. If I knew what usb dongle worked I'd try to buy one.

Hello Mr-Dave,

thanks a lot! That's a good suggestion. Now I am able to continue making some test projects with Scratch 3.0 and the micro:bit. Did you already report this “bug” somewhere on the forums?

And thanks for the link to the other micro:bit topic too. There are so many Scratch 3.0 topics, that it was hard for me to find the ones about the micro:bit. I hope you soon get an answer about which dongle to buy.

Btw, this morning there appeared an extension called ScratchBit that looked cool too. But I don't see it anymore. It seems to have some similair features with the micro:bit, but I don't know whether it is for sale yet.

I didn't report the bug. I should have.

Is there a specific forum topic to report bugs about the extensions?

One bug I encountered was that the variable box on my screen didn't display the name I gave it, but displayed the default one “my variable”, while the variable names in my code still had the name I gave them.

Btw, I just uploaded a little movie on my YouTube channel about using the micro:bit as a game controller for games made in Scratch 3.0. Maybe you like to see it? https://youtu.be/JvkdQOo0SAQ

I think the new Beta forum would be the place. I won't have time today to compose a bug report but I'll try tomorrow.

Thanks for the bug report you've made.

I've tried the pins of the micro:bit last weekend and Scratch reacts really fast when I use them.

I made another video with Scratch 3.0 and the micro:bit. It's about a Space race game controlled by a DIY steering wheel with the micro:bit on it and a gas pedal and footbrake made out of wood. Maybe you like to see it: https://youtu.be/m_yalxqAwdw
