Allow newlines in comments.

I've been rather annoyed by newlines not being allowed in comments, and I understand that it's so that someone can't comment 500 newlines and fill the entire page. I have a few suggestions regarding this matter:

1. Allow newlines, but limit them
Spam could easily be prevented if people were only allowed a certain amount of newlines, or an amount of newlines proportionate to the amount of characters in the comment.

2. Make newlines count as multiple characters
If newlines counted as 50 or 100 characters, it wouldn't be easy to use them to spam and it would work along with the character limit already set in place to limit the size of messages.

3. Warn users
If newlines can't be allowed for some reason, it would still be nice to given a reminder that newlines will be automatically filtered out, instead of typing a comment only to realize it didn't get formatted properly after it's been sent.

4. Text cutoff (Idea: DaEpikDude)
If a message is too many lines, simply cut it off with a Read More button, similar to how Youtube prevents spam.

You could do the Youtube solution where after 5-ish lines it gets cut off and you have to press a button to make it show the whole comment?

And all the world over, each nation's the same,
They've simply no notion of playing the game.
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won,
And they practice beforehand, which ruins the fun!

You don't see a use for actually having enters in comments?
It'd make formatting much nicer and would mean that you don't have to write walls of text if you're writing a large comment.

Support! I give tips on this or how to do that in the commenrs sometimes and it gets confusing with everything in 500 character chunks.

Support. If you are allowed newlines on forums, you should be allowed on projects.

Support, but there should be a solution for spamming it. Maybe as DaEpikDude said:

I hope this gets added.

This is my forum signature, here it's okay to… forget it, you've probably seen hundreds of these signatures before.

I'm going with the “hide comment” idea that was suggested by @DaEpikDude, but if this can't be added I think a popup explaining that newlines get filtered out is a good idea.

I support, but we should make sure that the Bad Word Detector can detect only newlines being used in comments. Otherwise, even with the suggestions you've already put in your OP, it's still possible to post only newlines.

Like this, it would be an amazing implementation.

That's a good idea, I never thought about that being a possible way to break this.

Major support. When I was first starting out on Scratch, I was so confused and I thought someone was messing with my comments when my newlines didn't show up This would be very helpful, and I think you've covered every loophole with this suggestion. I also like @DaEpikDude's suggestion.

Great idea with this one ^_^
