Scratch Dictionary

Hello Scratchers.
With new possibilities that come with Scratch, there are new vocabulary that newer Scratchers misunderstand and need explaining to them. Whilst I explore other people's projects and discussions, I see the same question over and over.
What does (word) mean??

So this is to help you lot understand our funny words that are spread around the community. Feel free to ask for definitions of words that aren't mentioned here, and feel free to post other words that are common amongst the Scratch community.

So, here we go…

MAP
When people mention MAPs on Scratch or make a project with the title of ‘MAP’, they usually aren't talking about our usual paper maps that give directions to destinations and places.

'MAP' on Scratch is an abbreviation (shortened word) for ‘Multi Animator Project’. It's basically an animation that was made by more than one person. They are usually about games, movies, and songs.

Vector
Vector is an art thing you can use on Scratch. When you create a backdrop or sprite, you can use Vector instead of Bitmap to draw them. Here is what the Vector drawing system looks like. . Vector allows you to do stuff that you can't do on Bitmap.

Bitmap
Bitmap is another art thing that you can use on Scratch. When you create a backdrop or sprite, you automatically use the Bitmap setting to draw (which you could convert into Vector). Bitmap allows you to do stuff that you can't do on Vector.

Support
When you like a suggestion on Scratch, say ‘Support’ to show that you want it to happen.

However, be sure to give a reason!

Semi-Support
Can be used in two ways:
1) When you feel that someone's suggestion has both advantages and disadvantages of the same ‘weight’.

Semi-Support! I think it would be confusing for new Scratchers but it would be cool for Scratchers whom understand how to use it.
2) When you don't care whether someone's suggestion is added to Scratch or not. You feel no actual opinion towards the suggestion.

Semi-Support! There are plenty of art websites and programs that have this tool so it has no effect on most people.
However, be sure to give a reason!

No support/Unsupport
When you don't like a suggestion and don't want it added to Scratch.

Spam
An unimportant post being repeatedly duplicated/copied.

Bump!

alexphan wrote:

Bumping is basically “forum slang” for Bring Up My Post. This means that when their topic doesn't get a lot of views / replies, they will say “bump” to bring it to the first page so more people are able to see it. For more information about “bumping”, see this Scratch Wiki article.
Except that he was incorrect calling it ‘forum slang’. It's proper term is ‘abbreviation’.

Sticky
In Scratch, it's not usually used as an adjective. They are very important forums that appear at the top of a discussion page because a member of the Scratch team put it there so everyone can see it. They are identified by having a pin image on the left of them.

Scratcher
A person on Scratch that has the ‘Scratcher’ status. They have advantages over ‘New Scratchers’ because of the chance of a ‘New Scratcher’ being an alt account or spam bot.

New Scratcher
A new person on Scratch.

Other abbreviations and their meanings
CC - Colouring contest (A project with a picture you must colour in and remix the coloured picture)
AR - Art Request (When someone requests art)
F4F - Follow for Follow (When someone comments/posts this, it means that they want you to follow them then they will follow you back.)
RP - Role Play (A (usually) multiplayer game where you interact with other players in a game. Sometimes you interact with bots (sprites) instead)
OC - Original Character (An original character. Usually for a game)
AMV - Animated Music Video (An animated music video)
PMV - Picture Music Video (A picture music video)
ST - Scratch Team (The moderators and administrators of Scratch)
CG - Community Guidelines (The rules of Scratch) (Could refer to Scratch or YouTube depending on which is being talked about.)
CP - Copied Project (A project that has been copied from someone else's.)
Wiki - often referring to the Scratch Wiki
WIP - Work In Process (When you haven't finished a project or a job in a group project)

Hope this helped!

Nice dictionary, however I feel as though a lot of these were mentioned in Austinato's Scratch Information Hub under the dictionary section. The abbreviations may have also been listed in Plastic_Echo's Scratch Slang Dictionary. Both of these are already listed on Paddle2See's Helpful Topics for Questions about Scratch.
That was a lot of linking…

Thanks. I only saw the ‘Scratch Slang Dictionary’, but that's because I wasn't sure if some of the abbreviations were correct or not. I didn't see the other two forums. I'm sorry this happened to be a necropost.

I think you should discourage use of the word “Support” while explaining what it means.

Added ‘However, be sure to give a reason!’ under the ‘Support’, ‘Unsupport’, and ‘Semi-Support’ headings.

What about “CS” for “Computer Science”? There are a lot of CS accounts and it's kind of confusing…
