why would we want a new default profile picture when you can easily change it?
besides, outside the forums, the image's blur isn't that noticeable.

It's the default profile picture, and fairly common among new Scratchers. It's supposed to be related to Scratch's design in some way, and the current default PFP fits the design of Scratch 1.4 with its gradient. It's also incredibly blurry.

I don't know how to explain it. I really like the gradients. The proposed icon just looks… It looks bland.

But I suppose the background could use a color change, but nothing else.

Isn't the blurriness intentional? Like, it's blurred because nobody knows who you are and what characteristics you have?

Support. Scratch overall seems to be shifting from skeuomorphic design (shiny, curvy, like the first iPhone) to flat design (flat, two-dimensional, like the current iPhone). This would definitely help in that transition.

It was designed for the 1.4-era Scratch website, with a light-blue to white gradient. It's also annoyingly blurry.
As such, I have created a replacement avatar that fits well with the new version of the Scratch website:

Another VERY OLD TOPIC that has been supported for a long time.

Might be interesting. If they decide to update how Scratch looks on Forums and Studios to look like the remainder of the site, then yeah, this is a good idea.

The background color is much less “subtle” than the previous profile pics, and the “gradient” effect of the current default profile pic makes it look like something that was made before 2010.

The second one is great! It really adds a lot more color and pop to the default pic! I'll be sure to send this to the Scratch Team!
