MS-DOS is a really cool operating system. I like it a lot! It can play a lot of great games like Commander Keen and a lot are free because the publishers abandoned them which means they're abandonware and you can get them for free now and it's awesome and you should try it. So discuss MS-DOS here?
btw i need help installing msdos on an ipod. can you help????

I can't say I've ever used it as an operating system. Aside from games what have you used it for? MS-DOS is a really cool operating system. I like it a lot!
Come to that, what have you been running MS-DOS on?
You can get most games for free through piracy. I'm not suggesting that one should simply that abandonware isn't the same as public domain. Abandonware games are only distributed for free because the rights owners don't think it's worth the trouble of stopping their distribution. They're still very much copyrighted and as such distributing them without permission is copyright infringement. a lot are free because the publishers abandoned them which means they're abandonware and you can get them for free now and it's awesome and you should try it.
I still have a floppy disk with Crystal Caves on it though and a shareware version of Secret Agent. Games weren't as good when I was a lad.
btw i need help installing msdos on an ipod. can you help????Look into Dosbox. I'm fairly sure it's available for iPods. I think one can run MS-DOS inside it (although from what I can tell to do so would be rather unnecessary). Normal MS-DOS will never run on an iPod without something like Dosbox in between though: MS-DOS was only released for x86 processors.

Sure it is, Look into Dosbox. I'm fairly sure it's available for iPods.if you got a jailbroken iOS device.
The two DOS games I like are the DOOM series (many modern mods and ports are available; I used to play Skulltag) and Tyrian (vertical scrolling shooter; there's a port called OpenTyrian).

Is it the ‘90s? MS-DOS hasn’t been part of Windows since Windows ME. After that version Windows transitioned to the NT kernel, ditching MS-DOS underpinnings.Windows command prompt? [

It's an old purely text-based operating system. What's an MS-DOS? Is it that thing you put on a sandwich in New Jersey?
I thought command prompt used MS-DOS functions? I guess not…Is it the ‘90s? MS-DOS hasn’t been part of Windows since Windows ME. After that version Windows transitioned to the NT kernel, ditching MS-DOS underpinnings.Windows command prompt? [

It shares some things with it but isn't a full operating system. I thought command prompt used MS-DOS functions? I guess not…

Windows is built over their previous effort, MS-DOS: when you change directories in Explorer, etc. you're basically doing the same as the basic DOS commands (cd, dir…) do through Windows' kernel.
Thus, the Command Prompt is not an OS itself, but an interface to the Windows kernel, which interfaces with your hardware - just like Windows software is. You're simply using Windows through a terminal.
You might be able to run actual DOS by installing a copy in DOSBox (you can install Win95 in it, so I figure you could install DOS. don't quote me on it though) or an old computer.

Except it's not built on MS-DOS any more. It used to be and then after Windows ME a big change was made - the switch to the NT kernel. All desktop versions of Windows have been built on that since. DOS is long gone. Windows is built over their previous effort, MS-DOS: when you change directories in Explorer, etc. you're basically doing the same as the basic DOS commands (cd, dir…) do through Windows' kernel.
The command prompt shares some syntax with MS-DOS but that's where the similarity ends.

Ah, MS-DOS, good old times, with that “Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading Windows” sign.
Until Windows XP came, then it was replaced with command prompt

I have a Windows 98 in my basement…
Windows 98 was before ME, right?
Actually, ME means Windows ME 2000. So that means that 98 (1998) was before ME, thus that computer has MS-DOS.
Oh, and of course the option to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. I tried that one time and it was very different… I think.
I'm not too sure, just faint memories…
I still use that computer every now and then for old CD games like Incredible Contraptions, Kid Pix (we do a “Kid Pix Radio” thing), various Tonka games (rarely), etc…

Old Windows versions could boot into MS-DOS mode because it was still present. Modern versions of Windows don't have that underlying element.

I used to have a really old and clunky Toshiba Satellite laptop in which I'd play a lot of DOS games.
I remember my best friend and I would play “The Black Cauldron” for hours trying to beat it.
Even today, my friend is talking to me about “I think I know how to beat it now! You do this move here etc..”
I've pretty much forgotten everything about that game
TBC was obviously the best game I had on there, but I also had some others: Hugo 1 and Monopoly.

You can get an iOS app based on DOSBox called iDOS. It doesn't require a jailbroken device however you will need to install it from iEmulators instead of the App Store.
Last week I learned that you can buy Commander Keen on Steam.
