wanted to ask before we got the new trailer which should be imminent because of comic-con.

me personally my favorite out of the three is sonic movie 2, with sonic movie 3 being my 2nd favorite, and sonic movie 1 being my least favorite out of the trilogy (soon to be quadrilogy)
Okay,

I'd say:

#3 - Sonic 3. I dont like Shadow’s CGI, the slapstick is too much, the farther jokes are stupid, Sonic is not his usual self, no Biolizard.

#2 - Sonic 1. This is what I hoped the story was gonna be for the rest of the series. I liked all of the SUBTLE references too. (My personal favorite was the Hill Top Zone sign that Sonic used as a ping pong table.)

#1 - Sonic 2. Good story, paced well, included enough of Tom. Had 2 different explicit songs in it.

They did that; it's called Sonic ‘06. Shadow’s characterization and story are fantastic, with no mention of Maria.

Why? It's the exact same CGI used for Team Hero.

-ThatOneGuitarist- wrote:

The humor itself is the exact same humor used in the other movies, and I'd say it's used just as much.

He was in the TV show that Maria and Shadow were watching 50 years ago. He isn't named “the Biolizard”, but the design is identical. Beyond that, why does the Biolizard need to be here? The story works just fine without him.

So, what, that makes two references? The first movie was hardly a Sonic movie, in my opinion. Again, it could've easily existed in some sort of alternate universe where this movie invented Sonic.

Except he's relegated to a boring side-plot that has hardly anything to do with the main story. Whereas he's a central character in the other two movies.

Why exactly is this a good thing? I'm so confused: Sonic is a kids' franchise, right? Having explicit songs should be a bad thing, right?

in the pyramid scene he did his stumble animation, there are SOME references but genuinely not that much. just a generic road trip movie.

Overall, the movies are great, and they're a big reason Sonic is in the great position he is today. I'd definitely make some changes, but I'm happy with what I have, and I cannot wait for what they'll adapt next.

i agree with most of what you said to be honest. my biggest gripe with 3 is its lack of aging up with the audience. sonic movie 1 was clearly catered to younger kids who would laugh at fart jokes a lot and see a fast blue character and fall in love. even though the first film wasn’t exactly a sonic film, it did help new people who would’ve never known sonic to find him.

sonic movie 2 proceeded to age up the series with a few more stakes, a (sort of) darker story with the knuckles origin, funnier humor in my opinion, and a longer film which doesn’t always mean it’s better but it trusted the kids who watched the first to stay with the second which leveled everything up. it has more references too.

sonic movie 3 i feel kind of backtracked with focus and leaned more into what movie 1 was trying to do. sonic’s jokes were worse in 3 then in 2, but i have to remember he wasn’t exactly a comedian in sonic lost world. i was personally hoping for sonic movie 3 to be more mature, especially with shadow involved.
his backstory with maria in my opinion doesn’t hit the same as the games. in the films it’s more accident based like they just so happened to shoot an explosive barrel which maria was by, it’s an accident and shadow doesn’t know. in the games there actually IS intent towards maria’s death which is why shadow is angry at gun.
then the part with sonic getting angry because he sees tom unconscious and shadow standing beside. keep in mind, shadow already was making sonic angry at him so if i see the same dude i’m already angry at standing over my dad who is knocked out i will be mad. that’s not exactly the same situation and not enough to share a parallel. even if sonic lost tom, he still has tails, knuckles, maddie, wade, ozzy, the entire green hills. shadow doesn’t have anyone, gerald clearly doesn’t treat shadow like family as he’s just a power source for a plan. i feel shadow even if the reason he lost maria wasn’t the exact same as the games, if anything the parallel should’ve been between knuckles and shadow. they both were at a point where they lost everyone and were angry. i was mainly hoping for a darker or more mature story for 3 but i can see why they didn’t just do that.

all the films are decent though, im just praying that movie 4 ages things up.

That is true; His World has one swear in it during the first verse. Personally, I don't actually have a problem with a swear word in a Sonic song; I'm more so just confused as to why having one is a good thing, when normally, it wouldn't be.

SPIKEdahedgeboi wrote:

I'm not gonna quote everything you just said. I do sorta agree, and I was hoping for a darker and more serious story than what we did end up getting, but overall, I still think the tone works just fine.

It's a small change to make the movie more accessible to a general audience. At the end of the day, Maria's death is still GUN's fault in both universes. In the games, they deliberately shot her. In the movies, they were likely going to do the same, but they hit a barrel and accidentally killed her. It's just that making it an accident will likely hit easier on your average child or average movie-goer.

#2 - I did some comparisons and Shadow’s mouth looks to large. Compare movie shadow to normal shadow in SXSG
#3 - Autocorrect and I meant Fart jokes. Watch this clip: Here
#4 - At the climax, Knuckles and Sonic changed roles. Knuckles trusted and Sonic got protective. Compare it to how he reacted in Sonic 2 when Tails was hurt
#5 - dude that was godzilla
#6 - I have genuinely no clue as to what you're saying
#7 - The hell do you mean, in 2 the focus was more on Randall/Rachel.
#8 - its funny. Especially how they censored one of them using a spindash

Is that all? Personally, this is just something I never noticed, and looking back, I still see no problem.

I mean, I never found a problem with it. I thought it worked just fine and wasn't used too much.

-ThatOneGuitarist- wrote:

Yeah, that's kinda the whole point. Knuckles has grown and changed, so he's thinking more rationally here. When Tails got hurt, Sonic met him, like, yesterday and he was just tased. Here, Tom is his father figure, someone he's known for a lot longer, and it's entirely possible he might die. Sonic is not thinking straight here.

-ThatOneGuitarist- wrote:

The only reference that I remember in the movie is the drawing of Sanic. You mentioned that, apparently, Hill Top Zone is mentioned on a sign that Sonic uses a ping-pong table. That would make two references, by my count.
Overall, yeah, the first Sonic movie still does not have the references and easter eggs that I'd hope for, which is something the next two movies do better. What you mentioned is a literal “blink and you'll miss it” moment, and you won't notice it until you go back and watch at, like, 0.25x speed or something.

-ThatOneGuitarist- wrote:

#7 - The hell do you mean, in 2 the focus was more on Randall/Rachel.
So Tom wasn't even a main character in the side-plot the writers forced him into.
You mention how the second movie includes Tom enough, but I cannot agree here. In the first and third movies, he is a main character and a driving force in the narrative. He's the entire reason we get the fight between Super Sonic and Super Shadow. In the second movie, from what I remember, he gives a pep talk to Sonic at the beginning, is nowhere near the main story while it's taking place, and is there right at the end during the fight with the Death Egg Robot, still doing virtually nothing.

-ThatOneGuitarist- wrote:

I didn't really find it funny, but alright.

Off the top of my head:
*Green Hills, Montana
*Green Hill Planet
*Echidna Tribe
*Mushroom Planet
*End scene is a remake of the First Sonic boss
*San Francisco is where SA2 is set
*When Sonic runs down the building its a reference to the building he runs down in City escape

Except most of these aren't “references”. What you said about Hill Top being named on a sign is a reference. Most of what you just listed here is an adaptation, though. They adapted Green Hill in two ways: Sonic's homeworld takes the likeness of Green Hill, and the city on Earth takes its name. The Echidna Tribe is adapted as the enemies of Long Claw and those like her. Mushroom Hill is adapted as a different planet with nothing but mushrooms on it. Sonic 1's final fight against Eggman is adapted as taking place in a city, surrounded by humans, in a different mech.

These aren't small references, like what you mentioned about Sonic running down the building. It's not a small nod to the source material - it's a new version of that source material for this new medium. And it's why I'd say my original point still stands; there aren't too many references to the source material, at least not in the way 2 and 3 do it, and not in those numbers. I also said earlier that this movie could be released in some alternate universe where Sonic was invented for this movie instead of already being a gaming icon, and you might disagree since all this stuff was adapted… but I'd say these things were adapted so seamlessly that they, too, could've just been created for this film; someone who has not played the games doesn't need to in order to understand what the Echidna Tribe is, for instance.

If I were younger and the “larp” slang was around, I would've been called a “larper” to death because I didn't really care about the character personalities, resulting in OOC Shadaze work, and got facts wrong like confusing Gemerl with Emerl. That didn't mean why love for Sonic wasn't genuine.

honestly I get the Gemerl thing since they're still the same character but one is more powerful but everyone knows shipping SHADOW with Blaze of all people is a recipe for disaster even if you're not too big of a Sonic fan

While I really do not want to go into shipping war level, Shadaze has plenty of fans due to their similar personalities.

Because it messed up the game plot even more
Be quiet.
I watched all 3 of the movies on opening weekend (I watched the first one in theaters 4 times)
I bought SXSG on launch
I got Mania and Forces on launch
I bought consoles just to play Sonic games (notably; the 3DS, GBA, PS2, and Dreamcast)
I was mad when Mario Maker 2 announced the removal of mystery mushrooms (the Sonic costume)

And I looked back and it is the Biolizard, but its in black and white and also lasts for like 3 seconds and also is obscured by text.

since when did fandom get to a point where in order to be the biggest fan, you have to spend the most money? in my opinion, the exact opposite is true. simply being inspired by sonic after one exposure to him and creating a character or story inspired by him is probably on par with the crazy amounts y’all spend for sonic.
