is it weird that im horrible at interpreting lyrics

like, moon waltz is supposedly about a failing relationship, but all i think about is an astronaut being trapped on the moon and unable to get back so they hallucinate and go insane

and the lyrics dont suggest its about a relationship

the beauty of songwriting is that you can interpret it however you want. a lot of songwriters mask their message in some sort of metaphor (such as the astronaut one you mentioned) so that it can 1) better stand out and 2) be less direct and more open to interpretation. this can of course make it harder to decipher the artist’s original intent but like I said, that’s the beauty of songwriting

I do that too all the time. Especially when the song is filled with metaphors I take it literally.

I could name one example but it's super innapropriate so I'll just say what the song theme is, arcade gaming theme.
