no scratch on chromebook
I am a SCRATCH teacher (in Germany) and for about 12 years I am using chromebooks (MD 60000) for our students without any problem. Since December 2024 we cannot open SCRATCH projects or accounts anymore.
We can open the start screen (https://scratch.mit.edu), but if we click “create“ or “explore“ we get a purple screen that will stay forever. At the same time I can open SCRATCH projects and accounts on any other computer, but not on the chromebooks. Has anybody any idea about this behavior and how to get SCRATCH back on the chromebooks? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thx
Here come the chromebooks’ specifications (I know the hardware is not really up to date, but it’s a donation and I cannot update neither OS nor browser):
Google Chrome: 84.0.4147.136 (official build) 32 bit
Platform: 13099.110.0 (official build) stable-channel veyron-mighty
Firmware: Google_Veyron_Mighty 6588.197.0
Javascript: V8 8.4.371.23

Welcome to the forums!
Would you happen to know the hardware? RAM and CPU in particular.
It sounds like you’re using the website, but the offline editor may work a bit better. You can get it here. it may display an SSL error, because the SSL certificate wasn’t renewed, but you should be able to just bypass it.

Welcome to the forums! Most chromebooks for school have 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and their CPUs are often low-end processors like Intel Celeron or Pentium. I believe most schools in the US use celeron (theres sticker on the bottom right of the keyboard)

Google chrome v84 cannot load into scratch anymore. I tried myself with a v81 version it can't. And those models are EOL so it can't update beyond v84. If you are feeling techy however you can go here and install “Full ROM” on these chromebooks which allows you to go and install Chrome OS Flex provided by Google which will be up to date to v134
