This would just add the option “for this user only”.
That means, you could make autosaving projects.

Just make a savecode and save it with the cloudvariable, and save it. When the user joins, you can load the code from the cloud variable.

Support for reasons provided, but I have a feeling someone has suggested this before…

I feel like it shouldn't be a cloud variable and rather a “Save this variable” variable which saves to your browser, maybe as a cookie or something, and fetches the saved variable whenever the project is loaded, so that the variable still does not reset between green flag clicks, just like how you proposed.
