There's something that's been bugging me.

Everyone is all the sudden talking about AI on scratch and about it stealing our art and creations-and I'm really confused.

I don't come to the online Scratch forum much, but I just had to ask: Is it true? Is scratch going to start using AI? And if so, what will that look like? Because everyone seems to be freaking out and talking about even BOYCOTTING scratch for a couple days. I don't think it's worth all the fuss-I'm just curious.

Scratch is indeed planning to add an AI, called the creative learning assistant.

This AI will primarily help by:
a)finding projects which may be helpful to the user (and suggesting to give credit to them)
b)suggesting individual blocks (eg, broadcast for interfacing between sprites)
c)explaining existing code.

It will not:
generate entire projects
generate images

Let's start from the beginning.

In August 2023, Eric Rosenbaum, director of Scratch Lab, published an article demonstrating an AI image generation tool for the Scratch Editor. It went on to say that because of issues relating to disturbing weirdness, bias, et cetera, it would not be added, even to Scratch Lab, any time soon. However, because some people did not read it thoroughly, they came to believe that scratch would add AI image generation, stirring up some controversy.

In November 2024, Scratch released a document advertising a vacancy for the job of Senior Backend Engineer. This raised attention because it was the first official mention of Scratch 4.0. It also raised much controversy, as it said 4.0 would have ‘creative AI’.

In July 2025, the Creative Learning Assistant, an AI chatbot for the editor, was announced. It was later demoed live at the Scratch Conference 2025.
Also in July 2025, Mitchel Resnick, founder of Scratch, posted an article showing AI blocks like

ask AI () and wait ::extension

. This was not brought to widespread community attention until December 2025, when the secret Scratch Lab experiment for them was found. They were quickly found to be easily made to respond with vulgar and/or offensive content, and due to the unexpected sudden amount of testing by the community, they stopped working after only a few days due to it running out of OpenAI credits.

On 22 January 2026, Scratch updated its Terms of Use to the new Terms of Service, a document that sparked an extreme amount of controversy due to things like explicitly giving Scratch the right to train AI on your stuff.

I think it would be nice to add a block to add things like AI npc's, but nothing else. I feel this would cause the most benifits with the least drawbacks

its just scratchers like me making AI but I don't think the AIs on scratch would ever be smart enough to make art let alone games in a pre built programming engine inside scratch

For one, people on this thread need not complain about necroposting because, as long as Scratch's TOS includes the clauses that allow AI to be trained on us, it is an ongoing issue.
Also, according to the TOS, we can have AI trained on us (here^1 and here^2), but we cannot train AI on Scratch (here^3). This is both hypocritical and a betrayal to the creative community on Scratch.

1: Limited License Grant. By Posting User Content to or via the Service, to the maximum extent of your rights to do so, including under applicable law, you hereby grant: (a) other users of the Service a non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, modify, and create derivative works of such User Content solely for personal use within the Service and subject to these Terms; and (b) us a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license (with the right to grant and authorize sublicenses) to publicly display, publicly perform (including by means of a digital audio transmission), reproduce, distribute, create derivative works of, and otherwise use and exploit the User Content to provide the Service, for internal business purposes, to advertise, market, and promote the service, and to otherwise improve our products and services and create new products and services, including through the training of AI models. You are solely responsible for verifying the accuracy and relevance of any Output. You acknowledge that Outputs do not constitute any kind of investment, legal, medical or professional advice and should not be relied upon, as they may be false, incomplete, misleading or not reflective of recent events or information. You further acknowledge that Output may contain content inconsistent with our views. As between you and Scratch, you own all Output. By submitting Input to or via the Service, and by using the Service to generate Output, you grant Scratch a worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully paid right and license (with the right to sublicense through multiple tiers) to store, reproduce, publicly display, publicly perform (including by means of a digital audio transmission), create derivative works of, distribute, and otherwise use and exploit your AI Content, in whole or in part, for the purpose of providing, developing, improving, and extending the Service and for commercial purposes, which may include (but not be limited to) licensing, developing, and improving AI models and allowing third parties to do so for free or for a fee. You must not submit Input that (i) contains personal data or is personally identifiable, or (ii) causes Scratch to violate any law or regulation, or violates any applicable third-party agreements or policies.
3: Prohibited Conduct. BY USING THE SERVICE, YOU AGREE NOT TO: Section 11; automatically or programmatically extract any data of the Service, including Output; represent that Output was human-generated when it was not; or use the Service or any Output to develop or train any AI or machine learning model.
