this is SHOCKINGLY accurate (especially the scratchr2 part), down to the source code. i genuinely had to check carefully to see if the source code was leaked or something. (it wasn’t) it seems like this is just a really accurate recreation but.. wow.

Hello, I'm the administrator of the site. I noticed there has been a small surge, I suppose this forum post would explain why lol.
I would like to clarify that the site is powered by a project known as APIClone. I did not write most of its code, I'm mainly just hosting an instance of it on a home server of mine.

The site does, on my side, sort of have a story to it though. When I was younger I held an account here; I eventually moved to a different account and then abandoned the site all together.
Eventually, I think maybe in 2023, I remembered about Scratch and noticed their web frontend, scratch-www, was public which made me interested in making a clone of the backend.
I was too lazy to ever do that, but I still remembered the idea last year. A friend found the HeatherscratchR2 project which eventually was superseded by APIClone. Eventually the site became a thing.

Yeah, I'm not really aiming for as wide of a demographic as scratch.mit.edu is. I don't think I've really named the site here, aside from maybe a couple of git links at most, and this is the reason why.

If I remember correctly, apiclone has theme switching support, but AFAIK it is only designed for minor stylesheet changes (i.e. blue vs. purple coloring) rather than the theme of the entire site.
There have been plans to extend it, but I personally have been too lazy to work on doing so, sorry for that.

For the frontend, yes! But the code that runs on the server side of thing is mostly written by me, though the forums are based on the one used for the real Scratch forums back in 2015 since that was open source back then, ported to modern Django by me and @chipmunkmc.

It's also supposed to be possible on the 2.0 frontend, though the admin for the site (chipmunk) disabled it, probably because it was messing up the website's dark theme.

And so did I! Even though I only learned about Scratch like a month after the release of 3.0, I've always preferred how Scratch 2.0 looked. The idea for a Scratch revival came after I set up ScratchR without using @jvvg's premade VM back in October of 2024. Having no experience with web servers, that took me three days. Later (I think it was like the day after), I made it so PHPMyAdmin only worked on localhost and I made the website public and advertised it on Grifftopia. It wasn't on 24/7, but it was better than nothing. That site had like 20 users or something before I shut it off. But a few people asked me for a Scratch 2.0 revival, and I was genuinely interested, but as ScratchR2 was (and still is) private, I had to take matters into my own hands, so I started work on a recreation of it in November, and that's how HeatherscratchR2, which chipmunk mentioned above, was born. It mostly died in December due to the inability to host it properly, being doomed to nothing but static file updates. It didn't get very far before dying, I mean, the home page rendered and it could even fake a successful registration, render a fake profile page and a very WIP messages page, and that's about it. You couldn't even log in!

Now here's how APIClone itself came to be: In mid 2025, Scratch had added the “Set Thumbnail” button, but it was only in the Github repo, not on the live site, so I began cloning the API to get it working. It gradually evolved over time, and eventually, I started porting over parts from HeatherscratchR2,, the first real page being My Stuff. Nowadays, it's just as good as a clone of the API as it is a clone of ScratchR2, though the real Scratch API is written in Javascript, whether APIClone is all Python/Django.

… but nonetheless, my deepest dream is still to get the actual thing.

Sorry for the lack of reliability on the site lately! It's been freezing up ever since I decided to switch it over to use the Daphne ASGI server, so maybe I should switch it back to Gunicorn and run a separate Daphne instance for cloud variables (though those don't seem to work for me anyway).
For whatever reason, when it freezes like that, trying to stop apiclone's OpenRC service seemingly doesn't actually stop APIClone's process. As such I usually have to kill it manually which is weird.

In case anyone is curious what I mean about the OpenRC thing:
Edit: I restored the site to its old configuration so maybe it'll be stable again.
