Compared to Windows, any kind of Ubuntu is so skinny it's going to be sent to the hospital

I've been having fun using sid (unstable). The install was a bit challenging since there's no sid installer, I had to take the trixie live CD and then use debstrap and chroot to set up the system via the terminal. Was a very “installing arch linux” type of experience.

Since installing it I've been extremely pleased, though. Meanwhile I was expecting being on the unstable branch to blow my desktop experience up with bugs and it's… way less buggy than Ubuntu. I actually have not run into any issues. I rate five stars. Only issue is the firmware support is a bit spotty, so there are laptops that I have to keep Ubuntu on for the camera to work etc. etc.

I'd encourage you not to wait. I believe there's an easier install process you can do by just taking the GUI installer and installing 13 then updating your sources.list file to pull from sid (that's what it says to do on the website but I kinda wanted to build the system from scratch anyway).

The bloat is real but it's basically all in the desktop environment (I guess the idea is it's worth it to make the experience more accessible to a new user). Ubuntu server doesn't ship with any snaps and none of the weird transitional package chicanery affects it, so it's still a very strong recommend from me. I would actually only recommend you use Debian on a desktop.

another stupid linux question, i only have 4gb ram but games i want to play are more (crossworlds (a sonic game) is 12, gmod is 8 and bo3 is 6 (not as much as i thought)), would using linux give me more?

Linux uses less ram (usually, and to different degrees depending on your distro), but doesn't give you more. If you're under the recommended minimum the game will probably not work right.

My brother in Christ, PLEASE upgrade your ram! I know it's expensive right now but you can really only browse the web with 4gb. If it's a laptop it should be not that expensive to get another stick, I was able to run bg3 on 8gb (granted I also had vram but eh) if it's a desktop I will literally just send you a 8gb stick because oh my god this is sad

okay yeah thats probably the best choice. I know universities have surplus that you can buy from them, I got my laptop from one of those for only 100$. If you really wanna game probs look at some older titles. Portal 1 and 2 can run on your laptop, along with half-life 1 and 2 and those are some of the best games ever made. Fallout New Vegas can also run on it and it's the best Fallout game ever made (also 1, 2, and 3 can run on it. get 3 if you wanna turn your brain off and 1 + 2 if you dont mind very old rpgs). If you wanna try a sonic game Sonic Mania can run on it and I heard it's also one of the best sonic games ever made. Also Postal 1 and 2 tho you have to be a specific kind of person to like those games lol. All of these are on sale rn too, the most expensive one on here is like 5 bucks

how I feel after not only playing fnv (a game held together by ducktape and a dream) on linux but also managing to load it with over 300 mods

Unscrew case with difficulty as there are about 4 different types of screws. Realise that the ram is glued/soldered (delete as appropriate) on. Ask customer support if they could kindly replace the ram. They hand you a £2000 bill bc the laptop has to be shipped back to the factory. You decide that this isn't worth it, then choose to run linux on the laptop/ buy an identical one.

Running linux is probably the correct answer. You can squeeze at least 3 years more out of an ‘unsupported’ PC. True some will need windows for windows apps, but choose the right distro and linux is the answer.

I recently switched to NixOS and have been loving it. It's very convenient to have all my configurations in a single, easy-to-manage place.
