Would this law affect scratch?

California might add a law that requires id verification for social media, which scratch technically is. If you’re under 16, you wouldn’t be allowed to access the platform.

i personally don't think so as scratch isn't technically considered social media, it's an educational coding platform made specifically for kids
BUT don't take my word for it, i could most definitely be wrong, that's just my speculation though

It did mention notifications as part of “what makes social media addictive”, but I do agree that scratch would probably be considered educational (the under 16 social media ban in Australia doesn’t consider scratch social media afaik for example) and in general id verification is bad
(Also this law isn’t official yet, it’s actually getting criticized a lot)

I'd say Scratch is educational, and adding ID verification would probably be extremely stupid
Only like 1-5% of Scratchers have an ID I digress, don't cite this I just made an assumption

I mean, the law itself is already stupid XD
If Scratch has to add ID verification, then that would suck for those with an ID too. I feel like it would affect them as well bc people don't want to give their ID just to use a website when it shouldn't even be ID locked in the first place
Edit: Also, Scratch does allow you to share accs with immediate family members (so like, it wouldn't even work) and people could just use their parent's ID

scratch doesnt really have “notifications” imo since you gotta log on to the website itself

*Does the opposite of raising hands*

Anyways it shouldn't affect you since Scratch is still an educational site used by many schools

Scratch hasn’t been included in any social media bans so far, but they have all been very specific about what counts as social media (like just straight up a list of what you have to be 16 and over to make an account on), this is different because it seems to include using the platform signed out and is very vague on what counts as social media, they only list stuff like endless scrolling and notifications (which are on a lot of educational sites)

I mean, I really hope that they don't count Scratch LOL. Actually, I hope that it isn't passed at all (including the OS age verification)

I checked the article again and it only counts for creating accounts, so it’s basically the same as the ban in Australia (which, afaik, didn’t effect scratch)
And yeah, this type of age verification sounds good on paper but isn’t really practical and can actually be dangerous.

I honestly don't think it's good, even on paper, since it's a clear privacy violation. Also, what happens when someone uses the same account or computer??
