Questions About Scratch’s Next‑Generation Platform (NGP) and Scratch 4.0

Hi Scratchers!

With the recent announcement about the Next‑Generation Platform (NGP), I have a lot of questions and figured others might too. Here they are:

1. Is the NGP the same thing as Scratch 4.0, or are they different?

2. If NGP isn’t Scratch 4.0, why is it being released first?

3. What parts of Scratch will actually change with NGP (profiles, studios, Explore, etc.)?

4. Is Scratch 4.0 delayed, or was it always planned to come after NGP?

5. What kinds of things will Scratch 4.0 change that NGP does not?

6. Does NGP affect how blocks, extensions, or project files work?

7. Is there any confirmed timeline for when Scratch 4.0 will actually release?

8. How noticeable will NGP be to regular Scratchers who just make projects?

9. Will NGP change moderation , reporting, or community guidelines in any way?
(based on staff statements I hunted down about new bulk tools, moderator UX improvements, and internal testing of AI for moderation use)

10. Could future AI features (if any) be part of Scratch 4.0 rather than NGP?

11. Is this transition similar to how Scratch moved away from Flash during Scratch 3.0?

Questions About Scratch’s Next‑Generation Platform (NGP) and Scratch 4.0

From what i understood, the NGP is just adding 4.0's ui onto scratch 3.0, similarly to how 2.0 got certain pages turned to the scratch-www (3.0's design, but i might've gotten the wrong name) before 3.0's release

I might be entirely wrong tho

Questions About Scratch’s Next‑Generation Platform (NGP) and Scratch 4.0

  1. They are different.
  2. Maybe it being finished first?
  3. Everything except the editor.
  4. Not sure, but maybe the latter?
  5. 4.0 is the editor; NGP is the website.
  6. No, as it is not an update to the editor.
  7. Around early 2027, according to a job listing.
  8. If they use the rest of the site, it will be very noticeable.
  9. Probably not
  10. Yes.
  11. Not really, as the technologies 3.0 is built on aren't getting discontinued.

Questions About Scratch’s Next‑Generation Platform (NGP) and Scratch 4.0

1) As the article stated, the NGP is a foundation for Scratch 4.0, not 4.0 itself.
2) It’s to give a strong foundation to build 4.0 (rather than making a lot of changes all at once.)
3) There’s not a full list, but the article stated that changes will occur to studios, profiles, and other 2.0 pages.
4) That is unknown.
5) That is also unknown.
6) And that is unknown too.
7) Not yet.
8) The article said that it may not be that noticeable, but it could be for people that use the features that were changed.
9) That is unknown (also, it is still unknown whether AI will be used for moderation, but there’s a good possibility it will.)
10) Unknown, but probably not (it’s not a big deal if AI is added anyway.)
11) I don’t know about this (I’ve never heard of Flash; I probably joined Scratch after they did that transition.)

As you may see, a few of the answers are still unknown. I’m assuming that a ST member may answer some of your questions here in the future, but I can’t guarantee that.
I hope this helps!

According to the announcement page:

“There are no new uses of AI in the NGP.”

So it seems the CLA will be coming in 4.0 rather than NGP.

Questions About Scratch’s Next‑Generation Platform (NGP) and Scratch 4.0

1. No, Scratch 4.0 is not NGP.

The NGP isn’t Scratch 4.0 yet, but we hope you’ll enjoy some of the changes we have in store! We’ll share more about our plans as we get closer to the big move.

2. The NGP seems to be a foundation to have a better place to start for Scratch 4.0. After adding this update within 3.0, I suppose it'll be easier to implement 4.0 and perhaps less immediently overwhelming when it releases.

3. This is all we know for now:

We’re looking forward to rolling out some features you have been asking for for a long time, like:
  • Google sign-on support
  • Improved studio experience
  • Refreshed designs and new functions on the homepage and profile pages
  • Customizable notifications
  • New project tagging system
  • Upgraded Explore page

4. I don't believe ST has confirmed the answer to this. Although, if I were to guess, this was probably the plan for a while.

5. No confirmation on this yet as far as I'm aware. Perhaps someone else is willing to speculate or provide information that I do not have on this.

6. I don't think it does.

7. No, IIRC.

8. While I'm unsure, it seems like we might be getting layout or website design changes based off the quote I mentioned in response to question 3, and that of course takes a bit to get used to for most Scratchers. Functionality-wise, though, I doubt it's a huge change for regular Scratchers making projects.

9. Not that I'm aware of.

10. Perhaps.

11. Can't say, someone else may be able to answer this one.

6. No.
7. No.
8. A bit, there would be “tagging changes” but not much else big stuff
9. Possibly.
10. AI will all be in 4.0
11. Pretty much

AI integration was mentioned to be planned for 4.0 in a document from late 2024, and they have only confirmed it since
