1. Unfamiliarity with pi: Most Scratchers are in elementary/primary school. While pi has a lot of interesting properties, the educational level of most users limits how much they can explore pi beyond its decimal expansion being infinite, having no pattern, and that its relation to circles. From their perspective, it is just another number. And the managers are clearly aware of this: almost all of the pi ideas in the studio description are about its digits (e.g. “Create a game where you must catch falling digits of Pi in the correct order.”)
   
   Almost everyone thinks maths is about memorisation and numbers, so how is this helping?
   
   
2. Limited project diversity: As mentioned above, the very few ways people have to do a project about pi mean that all projects are similar (e.g. the first 100 digits of pi) or not specific to pi (e.g. a platformer with a pi-shaped character). With basically the same thing done every year, I doubt people learn any new pi-related information from this event.
   
   
3. Too much pie: Taking all things together, to make anything creative, most people make it about pie (the pastry). I do not have anything against pie (or the project creators), but I think it is diluting the mathematics side. Making an SDS about pies is acceptable, but celebrating pies every year on a programming website is irrational (transcendental even).

On the contrary, “International Mathematics Day” sounds somewhat formal, and so I think the average Scratcher would be less interested in participating in such an event.
