I've tried to import sounds to Scratch 1.4 but it keeps telling me that it's either not supported or hasn't recognized it. Please tell me which sound files it supports.

1.4 is a very old version, so I can’t really help with that. Current Scratch can use WAVs and MP3, although sometimes WAV files can be large enough that the project won’t save.

To elaborate a bit on that:
MP3 files can also be too large for Scratch to handle - based on my experience files above about 10MB won't be able to save. It's just far more common to happen to WAVs because MP3 files are much smaller in general.
WAV files are also compressed upon upload, whereas MP3 files, unless edited, will retain their original quality and metadata.

But yeah, all of this goes for 3.0 - I'm not sure how it's like in 1.4, sorry!

I try getting certain music downloads and it crashes the scratch 1.4 editor or sounds like a panicking mouse

is it related to all of this? Maybe. I think I'll do some research on it.
