I think “Coconutum” and “Plumum” could work

-please, let's get on topic!!!!!!!-

If you haven't already; see the Scratch 2025 conference, it shows a WIP version of a potential AI assistant; and as I've said about 7 times already: it lets you paste code solutions without thinking and it suggests you to take inspiration from other projects (this last bit could potentialy cause issues relating to giving credit)

I would also like to point out the AI allows the user to ask for ideas. That kinda defeats the purpose of the “Imagine” in Scratch’s motto.

notice how Scratch Membership conveniently rolled around when the Scratch Foundation announced that they were going to be making an AI for Scratch? Just sayin'
Scratch is running solely on donations. It’s very likely that less than 1% contribute, so it’s not a folly to think they need more money to mantain their site and pay their workers.

I knew that. That was the point. Let's not derail.

I'm sure we've all heard the news of Scratch implementing a generative AI buddy for Scratch. This may seem useful and I agree that it's a cool concept. But this is a website for children to learn, not AI to help them. We have the Help with Scripts forum for a reason, and even backpacking scripts exists.

If children rely too heavily on AI for generating ideas, they may not develop the skills to independently brainstorm and problem-solve. The immediate solutions offered by AI can short-circuit the essential learning process of trial and error, which is key to cultivating creativity and resilience, which is what Scratch's main goal is.. fueling imagination.

AI-generated content will lack this emotional depth, potentially removing the personal connection that's integral to a child's creative growth. And we don't want that, do we?

my point is that by adding AI, you're destroying the creative vision of Scratch that solely depends on a child's imagination and the trial and error factor that makes projects good.

2.) Some users said that you can just use ChatGPT if you really need help, but I disagree. As I stated in my original post, we have human resources on Scratch to help you out such as the Help with Scripts forum and tutorials. There is no need for AI to spill over into places that were always predominantly human-made.

5.) Some AI training models have been under fire for being trained on either copyrighted material or material that it's creator didn't consent to using. How will we know if the people developing this AI for Scratch aren't using usermade projects without their consent? It's unethical regardless of whose the actual owner.

I'd make a pop-up before sharing a project asking “Do you want to opt-out of AI training?”
Although I have the feeling that nobody will give their projects to the AI, given the option

now i think about it whats the point of the scratch website if instead of learning something you just type a few words and the ai does it for you.

the CLA won't be doing anything for you! It will suggest blocks! wait until it's out to see what it's like and then if you don't like it THEN protest!

What's the CLA?

Anyway, AI won't be suggesting any blocks. It'll be like a debugger and will think of project ideas. But we already know that this will just stop people from learning how to debug on their own, which is valuable information. And people should be creative by thinking about how projects should be like by themselves and with other humans.

And if we let the ST add this, not only would they have wasted valuable time, but they likely won't remove it because “SOME people like it” or some other junk. Then this place slowly gets worse and less creative and the site ends up losing its original meaning.

AI is just a bad idea.

We can still protest AI, which is already highly controversial, before it comes out to prevent it to even be added. The CLA could potentially do the project for the user because can always just do workarounds.

We should protest AI right now, because it will be too late if ST adds it.
