Aw, this makes me sad, this unfortunately is a dupe. Maybe a merge?

It's been over a year since this was posted and suddenly everyone's coming back to it now? Interesting

Yeah, your topic got merged with a duplicate.

Scratch Wiki wrote:

Duplicate forum topics are usually closed by the Scratch Team, often accompanied by a post explaining they are closing it. This is to prevent the forums from getting cluttered, and it is also to keep the discussion of one topic in a single place.

If the duplicate is way more active than the original, the two topics can also be merged in order to combine the posts. However, this is not done too often.

Here's one to add: “Project failed to save because the project.json file is over 5 MB.”

There are probably better ways to word it — I'm not a fan of including “project.json” in the message because I'm not sure that everybody knows what that is — but it's another reason why a project may not save.
A long time ago (2020), the ST has mocked up a design for specific project could not save alerts, and there the message for the project.json size limit is:
Project could not save.
The file containing this project's code is too large.
(though I would probably specify the 5 MB limit there)

Interesting. I completely forgot about this post. Neat to see it get going again.

Oh, your project couldn't save? You might have a bug with your browser, or an internet problem, or your JSON is more than 5mb, or your audio is more than 10mb, Scratch could be temporarily down for whatever reason, etc. Maybe instead of just saying “project couldn't save” and have people need to just guess why and delete a bunch of stuff they don't need to, it should say “project could not save BECAUSE …” It's getting really annoying for me and I don't know what to delete or what to change, and I don't want to risk deleting stuff that isn't the problem. Don't just say “this is wrong”, we won't learn anything from that, we need to know WHAT is wrong about the project so we can fix it.

this could be HELLA useful because im trying to save a 266 MB project and i get blasted with “project could not save” WITHOUT any reason why.

i really need an explanation to this.

Try converting the project from “.sb3” to “.zip”, and then unzipping it (you can make a backup too). You might have a project.json file that is larger than 5MB or at least one audio file that is larger than 10MB

Oh goodness gracious that is absolutely a behemoth of a project. How much audio do you have in there? If you have multiple long soundtracks, that could be it. Could also be huge lists with tens of thousands of values.

How about…?
Couldn’t save; project is too big, try saving it to your computer instead.

That does not work. The .json isn't the whole project.

Yeah, I feel like it might make even more people think that the project itself has a file size limit. I see a lot of people stating Scratch has a limit of 50MB already, as Scratch 2.0 had that as the limit.
