SWC July 2025 Weekly #1 - Character Development

Intro (written by Willow)

Hey SWC-ers! It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the very first weekly of the July 2025 session!

In this weekly, we will be diving into the world of characters - helping you skillfully create a character for your next story! You’ll start from the basics - creating a new but flawed character. And as you complete the weekly you’ll focus more deeply on character intention and motive, and creating how they develop. At the end of the weekly you’ll be tying it all up, using all the skills you’ve learned!

Good luck, and have fun completing the first weekly of this session!

This weekly begins on July 3 at 12:01 am UTC.

Part 1: Creating A Flawed Character (written by Sophia)

Characters aren't realistic or relatable without their own flaws, and sometimes these weaknesses end up creating a more intriguing story. To begin this weekly, figure out an idea of your character's flaws–their negative traits that might drive them to make poor decisions. Summarize the flaws you've come up with in at least 150 words to complete your first part!

Part 2: Outlining How The Character Will Develop (written by Fini)

Howdy doodle writers!! I hope you're enjoying the weekly so far. For the next part, you will outline how your character will grow and change throughout the story. First, go to this workshop about character development by Evi. Continue by thinking about who your character is at the beginning—what are their strengths, weaknesses, fears, and goals? Then, consider what experiences or events will challenge them. How will they react to these challenges? Will they succeed, fail, or struggle along the way? By the end of the story, your character should be different in some way—maybe even more flawed ;D Enjoy crafting your character, and ensure that you write at least 200 words to move on to the next part!

Part 3: Understanding Character Motivation (written by Niko)

Now that you've figured out your characters' development, you'll focus on their motivations. A character's motivation is very important to make sure their decisions and what they do remain consistent and make sense for that character. Motivations can come from a character's past, things they care about, and goals. For example, in the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, one of Katniss' main motivations is to protect her sister, which leads to her volunteering for her sister and contributes to the reasoning behind many of her decisions in the rebellion to continue protecting her family. Now write 200 words explaining the motivation behind the character. Have fun!

Part 4: Tying It All Together (written by Encryn)

Throughout this weekly, we've taken a closer look at what motivates our characters to take on what they do, as well as how they develop and change as their story progresses, responding to the world around them. So, what's next? We're glad you asked—now that you've created your (im)perfect (;D) character, it's time to tie it all together and place them in a tale of your very own. For the final part of this weekly, write a short story in a minimum of 450 words incorporating your flawed character, focusing on character development and their motives as we've explored throughout the past week. Best of luck!

Outro (written by Skylar)

Whoohoo! You've just finished your first weekly of this session - feel like you've developed as a writer just as much as your characters have developed as people? Well, regardless of what you feel, you deserve a huge congratulations!

Before you can make a beeline for those delicious mangoes - uh, sorry, points - at the finish line, ensure that you have completed the following:
- Summarised your character's flaws in at least 150 words
- Written at least 200 words outlining how your character will develop
- Written at least 200 words explaining your character's motivations
- Written a short story of at least 450 words incorporating what you've learnt in this weekly

Your weekly should be a minimum of 1000 words for it to count. Submit it by July 9 at 11:59 pm UTC in the Main Cabin in order to earn 2000 points for your cabin! If you have any questions/concerns, contact a coordinator on one of their profiles, or you need an extension, please go here before the deadline.

LOL. This is my first time being on weeklies, I believe, so- xD

Ah, and I meant to ask–SDC Weekly #2 formatting. Finished the first two parts yesterday, not sure what to put for Part 3 and I'm fairly certain you have an idea for what Part 4 would be, so would you prefer doing that? And do you have a formatting template for the weeklies this session, or do we just go off the one last session LOL?

✰┊SDC Aug '25 ~ Weekly #1

——

Introduction

Hello, designers, and welcome aboard the first weekly of the session! Throughout this upcoming week, you’ll be creating your very own sticker pack to promote a message of your choice. I’m sure we’re all eager to start designing, so let’s not stall for any longer and get into it!

——

Part 1 - Theme and Message

For this first part of our weekly, we’ll begin by brainstorming any possible ideas for a theme you’d like your sticker pack to revolve around. You want your stickers to promote a message, whether that’d be related to climate change, peace, or anything else you come up with. It could be as serious or as silly as you prefer (yes, you are allowed to make a sticker pack promoting the nutritious value of potatoes), but please ensure that it fits within the Scratch Community Guidelines and won’t be offensive to anyone on or off the site. Come up with a list of 4-5 ideas, then choose one you’d like to continue with!

Part 2 - Brainstorming

Now that you’ve gotten your theme, it’s time to start coming up with any ideas you may have for the stickers themselves! Whether that be solely graphic or text-based, or some with a mix of both, include a variety of options! You’re free to take inspiration from external sources, but please don’t copy off an existing design exactly. Create simple pencil or digital drafts, or combine reference elements, to draft up at least 10 different sticker ideas that correspond to your chosen theme. Once you’ve done that, you can come back here and head on in to the next part!

Part 3 - Sticker Design

It’s time to actually design our stickers! How you go with this part of the process is entirely up to what you have access to as well as what you’re comfortable with, so pick whichever option sounds better for you. You can either use your usual digital design software (common choices are Canva or Pixrl), draw your own stickers, or even use the Scratch vector editor to create vector stickers (most vinyl sticker designs are created on vector!). The only requirement is that they are done digitally. To finish this part of the weekly, create a finalized set of at least six different stickers, based off your concept sketches from Part 2.

Part 4 - Packing It Up

Now that you have your stickers on hand, the only thing left to do before they can go out and spread your message to the world is… packaging! Design a package for your stickers, whether that be a sticker sheet header design with your stickers below it, or for those who would prefer their stickers to be sticker flakes, the little bag with a cutout window (If you choose this option, please design the back of the package as well!). Once again, whatever you pick is your choice entirely, so have fun with it!

Part 5 - Sticker Pack Summary

We’re almost there! You’ve created your very own set of stickers, packaged them, and now it’s time to sell them out. To finish off this weekly, write in around 50-100 words a short brief of your design concept, the message you’re trying to convey, and how you believe your stickers have achieved that goal.

——

Conclusion

And that’s it! Congratulations, you’ve just designed your very own sticker pack. (If you have a printer at home, or have access to one via your local library, feel free to print out your sticker designs and perhaps put them to use that way as well, we’d love to see your creations!) Before you head on to the Main Cabin and collect your pixels, make sure you’ve completed all the required parts of the weekly.

Part 1 - a list of 4-5 theme ideas for your sticker pack, as well as having chosen one to be your final theme
Part 2 - concept sketches of at least 10 sticker ideas, done either on paper or digitally
Part 3 - a set of at least 6 final stickers created in digital form
Part 4 - packaging in the form of your choosing for your sticker pack/sheet
Part 5 - a 50-100 word brief describing your sticker pack’s theme and overall message

This weekly is due August 9th, at midnight UTC, and is worth XXXX pixels! Please submit your completed weeklies before then. If you are in need of an extension and have a pressing reason, extension requests are available and can be found on this project. And that’s it for now, we’ll see you again next week! <3

…SHB SOON. …I'm tempted to stay up for it like with Icarus, but I doubt my sleep schedule would forgive me for it not that I had one to start anyways LOL.
