Scratch 4.0
To people who are coming here to suggest things:
The Scratch Team will not look here for your suggestions- please, put them in the Suggestions forum (https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/1 ).
This topic is for discussing what we know about Scratch 4.0, not hoping for some random feature (that, by the looks of what people have posted so far, is probably rejected)

Honestly, the ST has been pretty good about data privacy stuff- you have the option to delete your stuff at any time pretty easily. I don't see why this would be any different- I suspect that while they're likely not the ones running the AI, they may very well have either programmed the model itself or at the very least selected some of the training data and tuned it.snipYeah, so the major version bump is more of a brand change for marketing purposes, rather than representing a technical overhaul. Adding a chatbot or some other AI-powered feature to the Scratch 3.0 editor and website would've just been another update to Scratch 3.0 if there weren't some external forces at play. The question is who they're marketing to (probably not its users)
It's also unlikely that they're the ones building the data centers for hosting and running the LLMs, but they'd also really need to make sure the LLMs are compliant with data privacy laws since presumably they're making them available for children to use. I wonder if Scratch 4.0 will be available in the EU

That's not being “pretty good,” that's just doing the bare minimum. They're required by law to let users delete their account if they don't want Scratch banned in the EU[…]Honestly, the ST has been pretty good about data privacy stuff- you have the option to delete your stuff at any time pretty easily. I feel like the EU might pose a challenge because it's generally skeptical about AI compared to other jurisdictions. For example, ChatGPT and Gemini offered free subscriptions for students, but only if they're in the US and some other countries not in the EU, and 18+. Gemini isn't available for people under 13 in the EU. Plus, the incentive to introduce AI in education only exists in the US. I feel that it's plausible the Scratch Team might release Scratch 4.0's AI features only to students in the US, similar to how larger AI companies only make their features first available to the US.
It's probably very unlikely they're training the model themselves, so they're probably just going to give an LLM access to some guides about Scratch, and they probably have to write more docs for it to work with and find a way to let the LLM read/write Scratch blocks or other Scratch features reliably

The Scratch 4.0 may also include ChatGPT Kids, Gemini AI Kids or Copilot AI Kids. Kids version should be there in All AI because many schools teach children AI, basics of computers, etc. That all those AI(s) should include Kids Version of GPT 5 (ChatGPT), Gemini 2.5 Pro (Gemini AI), or GPT 5 (Copilot AI) and also… Claude 4.1. This might teach children (not to replace teachers, but to help teachers and parents). BUT IT SHOULD BE KIDS FRIENDLY. Almost every kid knows what is AI. So that's why!?

Compared to other websites who collect more personal info than they need and then sell that behind your back, I think the ST does “pretty good”.snipThat's not being “pretty good,” that's just doing the bare minimum. I'm not saying that they're the best, or that they're even doing more than the bare minimum (in this case). I'm just saying that they don't intentionally try to get around the law and/or do shady things with your data. It's a low bar.

Even though, I think that if anything, the ST's AI might get challenged on the grounds of if it's plagiarism or not, like several other models lately.

Scratch 4.0
In the 2024 annual report (released today), the message from Scratch's President/CEO has this:As we look ahead to Scratch 4.0 and our ambitious goal to reach the next 100 million children by 2027, …
Also, 4.0 was teased earlier in a Scratch job application section (which can't be linked because it indirectly leads to filling out contact information):In 2025, we’re responding to this growth by focusing on three strategic priorities: developing the new Scratch 4.0, with a re-imagined online community and creative AI; amplifying the impact of Scratch through our programs and research; and developing a robust business model to ensure a sustainable future for the software and the Foundation.
It was announced back in April that AI would be added to Scratch, so it seems 4.0 may be coming in the not-so-distant future. Any thoughts?
I don’t like the idea of AI in scratch, as it could take away actually learning to code. We don’t need a robot in scratch. That beats the whole point!

I've been hearing misinformation, and the AI will not give you the answer. It will extremely likely it just guides you to the answer, not give it to you. Scratch Team would never do that, knowing them.

Guys, I have a theory. Scratch 4.0 is taking a long time to release because their planning on implementing a 3D software to make proper 3D games.

Or because updating a website takes time? After all, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Yes, I'm talking about creativity in programming projects, not making art.you shouldn't have to be a good artist to be able to make the game you wantThere is no creativity if you are not creating anything. Why do people put AI into everything? AI is magic and not programming, sometimes even the creators don't know what they put into it / train it on. This isn't safeAI generated images could be a good way to encourage creativity… if it had super tight safeguards. And I doubt any existing AI is up to the task.

If Scratch needs an AI assistant, it's already failed at its task.

I feel like the ai should not do full debugging.
Debugging can be extremely annoying however it's part of programming and also correlates to real life, programming iseant to teach problem solving which isvery common in the debugging.
Sorry I'm on mobile and typing is hard lol.
Please correct me if I am wrong

I would think that Scratch 3.0 will get small updates FOREVER!!! If we receive Scratch 4.0, it might not be for a long time, because Scratch 3.0 will still be growing more popular over the years.

In fact, it makes it even more likely for Scratch 4.0 to appear as more people will see the update

If/when Scratch 4.0 comes out, will there be people doing the whole “3.0 Sucks” and Thanos Cat thing again, but for 4.0?
