This was recently taken away.

Many teachers are like me - a dedicated COmpSci/STEM role. We see all the grades. For the past several years, we put all of the kids into a class by year. This is because Scratch Classes are unable to be mixed for each year. For example, you and I are in 4th grade and we have Mr. Smith as our homeroom teacher. Next year, I have Mrs. Johnson and you have Ms. Apple. Now - as the CompSci teacher, I need to get you into the appropriate class each year. Doing it by grade level always worked, and we never had more than 100 kids per class. Now we are capped at 40 and can't add enough kids - NOR - rearrange them each year into new classes.

This was likely due to spam attacks (I've heard of people that aren't teachers abusing the feature to spam the website, and they then create a bunch of student accounts). According to this, it was 250 before

Right - it was 250. If they would at least make it so we could rearrange the classes at the start of the year…

in the meantime, you may be able to create a class for each teacher

Creating the class isn't the problem, it is what to do with the kids when the move grades to the next year. Scratch doesn't allow for easy movement

Creating a new class wasn't the answer either, because I tried that and the same five students who couldn't get into the first class, got the exact same error message again…

This is a DISASTER for me too! I teach 6 sections of CompSci/InfoTech. It's been incredibly helpful to have each semester all share the same Scratch Classroom so that students can share projects in my studios and see what students in other periods have created. This is a huge blow to the “community” and “design for a bigger audience” vibe I strive for in my classroom. Ouch.

It allows for students to be switched through classes. You can post your thoughts at the link.

Did this 250 to 40 just change? I am still reading it's 250, but when I try to add a student manually it states 40. I teach 26 6th grader classes and there is a limit on how many classes you can create. You can create a maximum of 10 classes within a six-month period. I combined my classes by site thinking I can add 250 students per class since this is what the site states, but now I am not able to add more than the 40 students and can't create more than the allotted amount of classes. Any ideas?

It was very recent, so the part of the website/PDF that you were reading is currently outdated

Any movement? We did have some Scratch reps answer our help requests explaining how classes are limited to 40, but when we replied with our dilemma, nothing back.

Any solutions? Huge issue when managing groups of students over several years.

I did make a topic about being able to move students from one class to another (https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/800122/ ), so that might be worth checking out and giving feedback on if you want to.

Still, nothing yet in terms of workarounds or solutions- probably the best thing would be to create a few classes and just add students into them in no particular order (and keep those around year after year)- it's not like they can't interact with each other on Scratch if they're not in the same class.

The limit was lowered due to spam attacks where someone created a class with more than a hundred students.

This has totally ruined things for me too. I am an ICT specialist teacher, so I see over 900 students a year, in 24 classes. I thought maybe I could just delete studios and then have the new classes save into new studios, but with a maximum of 40 students, I can't fit 2 classes in to one clas I can't figure out a way to get all of them into my classes, unless I start a second teacher account. So frustrating, surely there are lots of teachers who teach more than 10 classes

Great news! As of this morning, the cap on students per class has been raised from 40 to 150. This change was based on feedback from the Scratch community (including you!), which allowed our Product and Engineering Teams to determine a configuration that is both practical for educators and considerate of platform security for the larger Scratch Community using the platform.

Now that has been implemented!

Over time, the student cap was first set to 250, then down to 40 due to namesnipe spam accounts, and here we are now at 150 with the Scratch Team reviewing a lot of feedback from teachers to increase the number of students per class.

Although, still some namesnipe spam accounts can get in the way with the extended limit, Normal classes will be more flexible with this.

Also, off-topic, why isn't the preview button responding on time?

Now that this is implemented, this should be closed

Please make sure that all of your students for all classes have a strong Password So Trolls or other users don't have access to it
