“Hi!” You hear a very British voice squeal behind you. Turning around, you find yourself facing a somewhat young Chinese girl, with black hair pulled into a braid, wearing a white shirt under some denim dungarees, hauling a large piece of luggage. You could make out a pair of small crescent moon stud earrings on her. “Are you, by any chance, on the Singapore Airlines flight that got cancelled?”
Wait, what? Cancelled? You blink in confusion, processing what the girl had just said with a degree of shock. You quickly check your phone, and find the status of the airplane staring right back up at you. Cancelled. Seems like you weren’t going anywhere today. “Yes,” you reply. “Do you know why?”
The girl pauses. “Nope,” She replies. “I have just as much information as you, it seems.” She sighs, before glancing back up with you. “Well, it seems like we’ll be stuck in here together for the next few hours at least. I’m Skylar, a sixteen-year-old girl from the UK, and I use She/Her pronouns.”
You smile, and reply in turn with the same information Skylar gave you. Your age, your name, and your pronouns. Oh, and where you were from. “Maybe we should head to the check in desk to see what’s going on?” You suggest, not wanting to stand in the middle of the concourse underneath the departure boards.
“Oh, right.” Skylar replies. “That’s a good idea.”
The two of you make your way over to the rather long and slow moving queue at the check in desks, joining the many other annoyed travellers. Although, Skylar didn’t really seem annoyed at this. She just seemed to accept that this was a fact of life and just rolled with it.
“So… where are you going?” Skylar asks as you wait in the queue. “I’m going to be getting a connecting flight from Singapore to Auckland, since I really want to go to New Zealand again. I’ve been there once, recently, and it is a really pretty country. But there was so much I couldn’t see during my first three weeks there, so I want to go again and see more things.”
“That’s cool,” you reply, before replying with where you were going. You had a rather long fight with the airline in front of you, and so did Skylar by the looks of things.
“Oh, that’s really cool!” Skylar says. “I’ve always wanted to go there. I’m sure it’s really pretty.”
You nod in reply.
“Well, speaking of places I want to go to, I really want to go to Singapore. I’m a little bit sad I can’t get the longer stopover I wanted there on the way to New Zealand, but these things happen. At least I still have some time there, and I have time on the way back as well.” Skylar explains. “Singapore’s been on my bucket list for literal ages, and I’m so excited to try the food! I might hop over into Malaysia while I’m there, but I’m not really sure. I know the food there is just good in general, so I’m super excited for that. I also wish I could have gone to Australia as well this time around, but I can’t afford more time off school.”
“Understandable,” you reply, sympathising with Skylar’s groan of school. It did seem to get in the way of everything. “What are you studying right now?”
“I’m currently studying for my A Level exams next year,” Skylar replies. “I currently take Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Physics, and plan on doing civil engineering at university. Oh, and also taking four subjects is way worse than it sounds. What about you?”
Wow. A Levels did sound like an absolute pain, and yet it was only four subjects? You respond in kind, with what you were currently studying at school, and Skylar seemed quite interested in what you were currently talking about.
“That sounds so interesting! I would have taken more, but four is already a lot of subjects to be doing at my age. At least in the UK. I don’t get that many free periods either.” Skylar sighed, as the queue began to slowly shuffle forwards. “Do you have any favourite music artists you like to listen to?”
“Uh, yes!” You say, grabbing your phone and scrolling through your playlist to remember your favourite artists and songs. You reply with your favourite artists, and after a good few minutes of you rambling about your music taste, you finally let Skylar speak.
“Oooh, interesting!” Skylar replies. “My music taste is mainly Pop/Rock and Electropop, but I also listen to choral music sometimes as well. My favourite artists are Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, Coldplay, The Script, and Owl City! I’m currently really into Owl City at the moment, and my favourite songs by them are To The Sky, Fireflies, On The Wing, Shooting Star, Air Traffic, and Rainbow Veins, among several songs. As for non Owl City songs, my favourite songs are Something Just Like This, Message In A Bottle, Walking The Wire, and Superheroes, among several others. I also sing in my school choir and play piano and violin, so I do music that way too. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to attend the school orchestra for various reasons.”
“What reasons?” You ask, wondering what’s kept Skylar from attending her school orchestra.
“In short? Model United Nations happened, and that is now my life,” Skylar laughs lightly. You could tell that it brought her real joy. “Really. That is my pride and joy. I love causing so much chaos at the conference I go to every single year, and it brings me so much joy to be able to do so. Every time chaos happens, it happens and I love it so much. I love chairing just as much as I love delegating, but I do prefer being a delegate slightly more and being part of the chaos that way.”
The words came out thick and fast, and you couldn’t quite follow it. “Sounds interesting,” you reply nonchalantly, trying to make it seem like you understood what was said.
“It is!” Skylar grins, before groaning. “Urgh. I really need some tea right now. But we’re almost at the front of the queue, so hopefully it doesn’t matter.”
“Tea?” You raise an eyebrow. “Seriously?”
Skylar smiled. “I’m British. Of course I need tea. Made correctly.” She laughs. “Oh well, it’s fine. I can just suffer through this line.”
You laugh with Skylar. How very British indeed. You see Skylar checking her phone again, before she groans.
“No updates.” She sighed. “I guess we’ll be here for a while then. Speaking of, this gives me so much more time to plane spot, if I get rebooked today.”
“You do plane spotting?” You ask, slightly surprised.
“Oh, yeah!” Skylar smiles. “I love plane spotting - whenever I’m at the airport, I always have to do it. I’ve gotten some amazing photos in the past. In fact, some of my best travel photos are photos of planes from the airport. I got several stunning ones on my last trip to New Zealand - planes at the airport during sunset are just so stunning.”
“Could I see some?” You ask, curious to see if Skylar had any photos on hand.
“Oh, of course!” Skylar grinned, grabbing her phone and flicking through her photo library. She shows you several absolutely stunning airport photos - of planes against the sunset and planes in broad daylight. They were just as Skylar promised.
“Those are so pretty.” You remark as you watch Skylar put her phone away. “I take it that you’re into planes?”
“Planes, trains, and all things public transit!” Skylar smiles. “That’s why I want to go into civil engineering - I’d love to build public infrastructure that will help people get to where they need to go. That’s why I actually took the train here today. I just can’t get enough of trains. And also why I’m so excited to be at the airport.”
Ah. That explained a lot.
“Next please!” You hear a check in desk agent call, and notice that you and Skylar were at the front of the queue.
“Oh! It seems to be my turn,” Skylar says, taking her luggage and waving. “Well, it was nice talking to you! Hopefully we can be on the next flight together.”
“It was nice talking to you too,” You respond, as you watch Skylar reach the desk and talk to the check in agent. You’d be called up soon, be rebooked onto a new flight, and then hopefully get to your destination without too much delay.

Today was a glorious day for complaining about the government. Every day was, actually. Complaining about the shortfalls of the government was a thing Miranda did rather often, considering she was the presenter of a news program. The most chaotic news program to ever exist, thanks to her colleague Casey Rassmussen. (If anyone asks, they are colleagues and not friends. Miranda would never put up with Casey’s chaos, although deep down she did really like Casey and would consider her a friend. But it was easier to be taken seriously when you showed that you wouldn’t take nay of the silliness your colleague did on a news program.)
“Welcome back to Afternoon News with Miranda Greaves and Casey Rassmusen.”

Prompt - “The Lost Jungle” by Scarlett Kalluri, provided by Kat
(Please don't tell me how this is literally Star Trek, or a heavily inspired version of Star Trek. I know, and I was fully aware of the fact while writing this. Basically, I've gone back to a bit of a Star Trek-style science fiction obsession due to what one of my current writing projects is, so that's… a lot of fun, ahaha.)
“Captain, I’m receiving a federation distress signal.” The confused voice of Artemisia’s communications officer, Ingrid Soderstrom, interrupted the peaceful silence that had fallen over the bridge. “The ship has identified itself as the FS Attenborough. That’s… impossible - the ship hasn’t been missing for years, it’s essential power systems shouldn’t even be operating by now!”
“Hixson, pull us out of warp.” Artemisia commanded, signalling for her pilot and helm officer to pull the ship out of warp speed to see what was going on. “Soderstrom, send a status update to Federation Command that we will be dealing with this, and be unable to make our rendezvous.”
“Copy that, Captain.” Hixson replied. The bright swirling lines of the warp bubble abruptly ended, with the planet below coming into view. It was nothing like Artemisia had expected, with swirling forests on the planet below.
“Sending the status update now.” Soderstrom replied.
“Woah.” The sound of awe and wonder made Artemisia turn around. Her first officer, Commander Michaela Langley had just made the remark. “That… that shouldn’t be possible. According to our records, the planet where the Attenborough lost contact with Federation Command is supposed to be deserted.”
“Hixson, check the coordinates.” Artemisia ordered.
“Captain, the coordinates check out. This is where the ship was lost.” Hixson reported.
Artemisia was confused. This shouldn’t be happening. It was probably best to proceed with caution, then. “MacNamara, put us on yellow alert. Tell medical to prepare for casualties.”
Katherine MacNamara, Artemisia’s weapons and tactical officer nodded. “Understood, Captain.”
The transparent computer screen embedded into the window lit up with the bright yellow border, the bridge lights dimming, and the sound of an alert blasting for a few seconds.
“Soderstrom, can you hail the vessel?” Artemisia asked.
“Yep,” Soderstrom replied. “They’ve just responded to our hail; they’re opening a channel now.”
“This is Acting Captain Commander Lyra Whitney, of the Attenborough.” The voice of the officer-in-command of the ship came through the comms.
“Commander Whitney, this is Captain Artemisia Henderson of the Endeavour. We heard your distress signal.” Artemisia replied. “We’d like to know what help, if any, we can offer, and we’d also like to know why this planet isn’t as deserted as the records show.”
“Evacuation would be nice, although it has been quite a few years,” Whitney replied. “As for your question, we were researching the possibility of regenerating a planet like this to full biodiversity, and we already realised that the planet was beginning to be taken over by nature. We stayed and investigated, and have since restored the planet to full biodiversity. We like to call this planet The Lost Jungle.”

Slow Paced Scene - 215 Words
They were sitting on a rooftop. Again. They had sat on far too many rooftops recently, Alayna felt. And yet, here she was. On another rooftop. On yet another stakeout.
“Okay, remind me why you decided to take us out on another stakeout?” Alayna asked her partner, Erin, who was carefully watching the scene below for their target.
“Because we have to be absolutely sure it’s the right person,” Erin replied, grabbing the binoculars out of Alayna’s hands. “Last time, we weren’t so sure. We have to be sure before continuing our mission,”
“Okay.” Alayna sighed, turning around to her precariously mounted computer. Sighing again, because why did she have to be doing this boring job, she decided to hack into the video feeds of the surrounding buildings.
Alayna stopped herself. This is the Slums. They had no way of accessing the video feeds, if they were even connected to some kind of centralised system, because the government didn’t care.
Okay, it wasn’t so much that the government didn’t care, it was more so that the Shadows wanted this part of the city covered up, but that didn’t matter in this context. Alayna had an agent to arrest.
She was once again staring out at the road below, watching for any sign of unusual movement.
Fast Paced Scene - 270 Words
A figure appeared from the shadows, stepping into the dim lighting of the alley. Grabbing a quick snapshot and enhancing, Alayna could tell that yes, this is the same man who tried to assassinate diplomats Zhao Yinxing and Taylor Sanderson.
“Erin, go!” Alayna hissed, ushering Erin off the rooftop and hoping that she’d jump down with her grappling hook and stun the man.
“What?” Erin asked, confused.
“Erin, just jump! We’ve got him,” Alayna hissed again.
“What, that guy down there?” Erin asked.
“Yes! You’re losing time! Go!” Alayna hissed again. Her rather loud hissing must have caught the attention of the man, for he was now glancing around him.
Erin, for her part, released her grappling hook, and jumped from the building, caught just in time to make a smooth landing.
Alayna turned to her computer and activated the comms system they had tested beforehand, so she could get updates.
She could hear groaning from Erin’s side of the comms, and heavy panting.
“Hands up!” Erin yelled.
There was some silence, before the sound of shuffling.
Then the sound of very fast running.
Erin was panting, Alayna could tell, and from her very rudimentary map of the slums, Alayna could see where she was based on location data.
“Status update, Halcyon,” Alayna requested, using their codenames.
The panting on the other end slowed down with the sound of a stun blast being fired.
“I’ve got him,” Erin responded, panting heavily. “Come and help me get him into custody.”
“Copy that,” Alayna replied, packing up their rather small mess on the rooftop, and making her way over to Erin’s location.

Emotion: Sadness - 342 Words
Trigger Warning: Mentions of death, implied minor character death
“They’re… dead.” Alaina whispered through racked sobs as she tried to process what happened. “It went down, and it crashed, and… and now… I just feel so… so…”
Alaina felt the reassuring hand of her work partner, Kallie, on her shoulder. “Laina, there was nothing more that you could do,” Kallie said. “It was a high speed collision. No-one could have survived their injuries from that.”
Alaina shook her head fiercely. “That’s not true. Those… those two hundred and eighty something people… all gone. I. I don’t know.”
Kallie moved in closer. Alaina knew that this was not the first time they'd delt with a serious plane crash around here - they’d both been on duty for the last one, and that one did have survivors. Here, there were none.
“Sometimes,” Kallie said, “there is nothing you can do for them except make them comfortable.” The words were empty to Alaina. They’d been said too many times before, in her training, and in the field. Facing death was a part of her job. And yet, she’d always held on to the tiniest sliver of hope that someone would pull through. She’d never stop until there was nothing else she could do.
But those 283 lives aboard the plane… surely someone must have survivors, no matter how slim.
Hoping was fruitless. The side of her grounded in facts, similar to her brother, Alfie, knew it was fruitless and she kept reminding herself of that, constantly. But the side of her that screamed for hope - that was the side she’d learned to listen to. And so it was all the more harder for Alaina to accept that these people had all gone.
“Kallie,” Alaina asked, turning to her friend and colleague. She was holding on to desperate hope. “Kallie, please tell me there were survivors.”
Kallie’s silence was all the confirmation that she needed. Her heart crumbled down, crushing the small light that she had held on to. “Kallie…” Alaina sobbed again, leaning in close to her friend.
283 lives, lost in a plane crash.
✩ Part 3 ✩
612 words
(Once again, do not tell me this is Star Trek but not quite- I know)
It was just past 07:00 ship time, and Shift One had just come on duty to relieve Shift Five at the bridge. Weapons and tactical officer, Lieutenant Commander Kathrine MacNamara, relieved her Shift Five counterpart at her station. She watched as other members of the Shift One bridge crew relieve their Shift Five counterparts - Captain Artemisia Henderson taking her place in the captain’s chair and relieving the officer in command from their role, first officer Commander Michaela Langley taking her place at her station, communications officer Ingrid Soderstrom relieving her counterpart at the station opposite Katherine’s, and Commander Laura Hixson taking the helm controls.
Katherine was glancing around her monitors, noticing a strange object that shouldn’t be there. The transponder on the vessel wasn’t returning a Federation signature either. Strange.
“Captain, I’ve got an unidentified vessel on our sensors. It is a ship, as it’s sending transponder data, but it isn’t a Federation ship.” Katherine reported. “Scanners report life signs on the ship.”
“Lieutenant Soderstrom, can you contact the vessel?” Katherine heard Artemisia order.
“Contacting the ship now. I’ve sent a hail.” Ingrid replied. “They’ve responded - they say they’re a Federation ship with a damaged transponder, identifying themselves as the Cavendish. They’ve requested help as their ship was badly damaged by an EMP.”
“If they were damaged by an EMP, then we might be as well.” Artemisia said. “Yellow alert. Proceed with caution. Soderstrom, put medical on standby to receive any injured. MacNamara, keep an eye on the scanners. I want to know if anything is heading out way.”
“Copy,” Katherine replied, pulling up the right windows on her screens to allow her to see what might be heading towards them.
“Roger that,” Soderstrom replied.
Just then, several ships dropped out of warp. “Captain, several imperial ships have just dropped out of warp,” Katherine reported. “They are charging their weapons.”
“Shields up, red alert. Helm, move us in as close to the Cavendish as possible.” Artemisia ordered.
“Understood,” Laura replied. Katherine watched as she began flying their ship into a location where it could protect the damaged Cavendish.
“Soderstrom, inform medical to prepare for casualties. Open a channel with the enemy ships if possible.” Artemisia ordered.
“Captain, it’s no use,” Katherine called. “They’re arming their weapons.” The information displayed on her screen was, for lack of a better word, worrying.
“They’re not responding to my hails,” Ingrid added.
“We must let them strike first, at which point, it will be self-defense.” Artemisia said. “MacNarama, where are we on our weapons charging?”
“Eighty percent, sir,” Katherine reported. They wouldn’t be fully charged for another few seconds, even with power diverted away from extra systems.
Then a bolt rocked the ship.
“Shields holding at ninety percent, minor damage to decks five and six, no casualties reported. Weapons fully energised and ready to fire,” Katherine reported.
“Going to try and dodge their blasts, but it’s not going to be easy with a ship to protect,” Laura said.
“MacNamara, return fire. Soderstrom, hail them again.” Artemisia ordered.
“Yes, sir!” Soderstrom replied. “Hailing now.”
“Returning fire,” Katherine responded, pressing the button to activate the weapons.”
“Scans show one of the ships taking damage.” Katherine reported, before another explosion rocked the ship.
“Damage reported on decks four and five, no further damage on deck six. Shields holding at ninety percent.” Katherine reported.
“Captain, I’ve made contact with the crew of the other ship. They’d like to speak to you.” Soderstrom said.
“Yellow alert. Keep our shields up, MacNamara, and weapons energised just in case.” Artemisia said.
“Copy that,” Katherine replied, glad for the rather sudden ordeal to be over.
“Open a channel, Soderstrom. Let’s hear them talk.”

Cards Against Humanity x Exploding Kittens
This game is a combination of Cards Against Humanity, Exploding Kittens, and just word games in general. It requires at least 2 people to play, but more to be fun!
At the start of the game, everyone picks a word that if someone uses at any point, they explode and are out of the game. There are restrictions on this word though - it has to be a noun or an adjective. Aside from that, it can be any word in the world.
Then, play starts with one player writing a sentence with some deliberate blanks in it. The other players then have to come up with the funniest way to complete that sentence, and whoever’s sentence was the funniest, decided by the person who gave the sentence, wins the round. Then the next person goes. The sentences can be completed with either words or phrases.
If at any point, an explosion word is used, then the player whose exploding word it is must yell “explosion!” Then the person is out of the game, and can no longer participate in the game. The remaining players pick a new word to be an exploding word, and play continues. If the exploding word is not noticed by the player, then play continues as normal - if it is not noticed at the time of use, then a player cannot be retconned into being out.
A player is not immune to their own explosion word.
Play continues until the last person has exploded, and there is one winner.
To make play quicker, you can pick a theme that all the blank sentences and explosive words must relate to - however, words used to fill in blanks are exempt from this theme. For example, if the theme was space, a sentence must be related to space in some way, and so do the explosive words. So “The (blank) astronaut looked out the window and saw (blank)” would be a permissible sentence, but “The (blank) was waiting outside the (blank)” would not be a permissible sentence.
Here is an example of play with four players: Alaina, Beatrice, Cassidy, and Daisy.
Let’s say Alaina’s explosion word is “castle”, Beatrice’s is “ocean”, Cassidy’s is “broken”, and Daisy’s is “carrot”.
Alaina: I ran after the dog, who was chasing me because (blank).
Beatrice: I ran after the dog, who was chasing me because I was a chicken.
Cassidy: I ran after the dog, who was chasing me because I was an alien from space.
Daisy: I ran after the dog, who was chasing me because I had stolen its beloved toy.
Alaina: Okay, I liked Beatrice’s the best.
Beatrice: Okay, how about… “At the beach, I (blank) because I wanted to (blank)”
Cassidy: At the beach, I picked up pieces of carrot because I wanted to make a carrot recorder.
Daisy: Explosion!
Cassidy: Aww, dang!
Cassidy is now out of the game, and Alaina, Beatrice, and Daisy would choose new words to be their explosion words!
