For anyone looking for some kind of precedent for this:

Before studios were updated to scratch-www in 2021, managers could edit their descriptions. Part of the reason why this was removed was because several studios had started using them as a managers-only chat, which was effectively what is being suggested here, but with no definitive way to tell who said what (leading to this feature being removed). With something more like comments, however, this may work (as a moderator can definitively tell who posted what)- but it should be easily visible, and not tucked away in a corner where nobody will look unless they're trying to have a private conversation.

May I suggest that:

1. “private” comments are visible on the comments section of the user's profile page, like any other comment, but with the “reply” button removed for users who can't post there, and
2. Only the account whose profile the comment is posted on (and ST members, of course) can choose to make it “private” or not. This can be changed at any time, and the list of people allowed to comment there can change at any time.

Note that I'm using “private” in this context to refer to restricting certain people from replying, not making them actually private.

KOTP!

So Scratch isn't a game website it's a coding website so I don't see why this is a bad suggestion

The reason why I like this suggestion is that everybody can see it and it can be reported. it's a good idea because that will solve the issue with private messages.

Support because yes sometimes people interrupt conversations where they shouldn't and makes any given situation worse.
And also support because people only go on suggestions and find ways of why it shouldn't be in scratch, not why it should

One thing I want to mention- I am currently making a series called BFVI with other scratchers voicing, and I would like to give them their lines without other people seeing them so they don't get spoilers and leak the episode. This goes for collaboration in general- I want to be able to give people their lines without spoilers.

Looks good! I suppose it will also be somewhere on the profile page so that other people can see it.

use the collaboration forum and share them the link on your profile and delete it. use the forum for this purpose as private messaging (nobody can see it except for receiver and sender) is rejected.

How would other people see it?

I'd like to suggest the idea that someone can request to be part of a conversation, like a ‘request to join conversation’ text that you can press, then having a confirmation (are you sure you would like to request to join this conversation? (y button) (n button)), and then the other users can see when they see the direct message, a little tab called ‘requests to join’, which will not give you messages, but can be seen at the page where the convo is and only visible to members of the convo. Then they see a pfp and ‘username requested to join conversation’ and accept or decline. They can accept or decline or make a decision later. The requester could then see in their messages the accept message if accepted (no decline message to avoid drama!)

I hope that isn't too wordy- I might make a mockup but I can't guarantee one

Although it's more safe, the users who require an actually private conversation (for legitimate reasons like sharing work-in-progress links or preliminary ideas) won't have the option. Public group chats can be spammed or become out of hand if not carefully moderated. Group chats can turn into places for gossiping or bickering if not watched carefully. Users can't edit typos or clarify themselves after sending—this can be frustrating and lead to misunderstandings. Since posting is limited to the individuals in the chat, others may feel left out or confused by discussions they can read but not join. Though public, the addition of group chats may contribute to the workload of moderators in terms of handling reports and ensuring safe conversations.
