If the user gets an alert, they should also get a banner in the homepage, saying like you have 1 alert to look at, clicking on it opens the messages, and the banner also shows a short summary of the alert before the user clicks on it.

I don’t think users would like to get scared with such a thing as “YOUR PROJECT “SPRUNKI RETAKE SCRATCH PORT” HAS BEEN DELETED!!! CLICK HERE TO SEE WHY!!!” when they first open Scratch.

That's what an alert should do, the user would later understand what they did wrong.

A banner seems too intimidating. If this were to be implemented, instead of a banner, the orange dot that appears over your mailbox could be red instead.

But overall, I don't think this is necessary. Pretty much everyone reads their mail, so this seems too unnecessarily threatening.

Well, if there is both regular messages and alerts, the icon will be half orange half red, and the count will be “!!” instead of a number.

That could be a little intimidating, especially for younger Scratchers.

Maybe a red “!” sign on the message icon would suffice?

How about instead, if a user has an alert and a normal message, there would be the normal message icon, and next to it, there is a red number for the number of alerts you have.

Sure, some people don't read their messages. But I don't see why we should have to suffer because of it.
