Introducing "HEX" - My latest puzzle game!

HEX is an abstract puzzle game that is easy to learn, but hard to master.

Drag and drop any of the “tetrahexes” onto the game board. Completed lines in any direction are removed. The more lines you complete at once, the larger a bonus you get!

If you're stuck, wait 15 seconds for a hint…

There are two game modes:-


CLASSIC MODE:
  • No rotations
  • No time limits
  • Single tile drops
New shape types appear every 10 lines.

Use the single tile “lifelines” wisely - they get less frequent as the game goes on.


SPEED GAME:
  • Rotations allowed
  • 3 minute timer
  • More shape types
To rotate the shapes clockwise just click on them. To rotate them anti-clockwise, computer players can hold down space while clicking them. (Sorry mobile users!)


Can you get on the high score table for both game modes?

How does scoring work? I noticed that if you connect multiple lines at the same time you can get points in the 10s of thousands, but only one line being connected doesn't really change your score.

Yes indeed, there’s a bonus multiplier when you clear more than one line at the same time, and it doubles every line you clear in that turn. So it’s really worth trying to do that because you can get loads of points!

For example, clearing 3 lines earns you around 1000 points, but clearing 5 lines can get you over 5000 points!

The theoretical maximum is 9 lines (for the long straight shapes)… the most I did in testing was 7, but that was on the rotate version before I added the timer. I think that earned around 20,000 points!

I recently found out you can change the ‘ Boarddata’ variable to create all sorts of new level maps that make the game 10 times more crazy! here's a fun one:

(also, don't change the level data to contain any other number than 1, 2, and 0).

It's not very sophisticated. After every move, the board is checked to see if any of the available pieces can be placed. That's how it knows if it's game over or not. As soon as it finds one that can be placed it breaks out of the loop, storing the positions of that placement in a list. Then after 10 (?) seconds if no input is detected, it flashes those hexagons. So the hint isn't anything other than the first detected valid move - it's not an indication of whether it's a good move or not!

After playing for awhile, I've noticed two distinct board components: “Chunks” and “Holes”.
define Chunks
Chunks are arrangements of blocks that are all connected and have no “dents” or “gulfs” larger than one unit. Chunks are generally difficult to attain without careful attention to what lines will be completed by your moves. Chunks must generally be 4-5 units or larger to be a valid place to graft other blocks onto. The fewer chunks you have in your position, the more lines you can score at once and the lower the likelihood is that you will run out of moves. 4 by 1 blocks are invaluable in cashing in chunks by scoring them. When completing lines, try to do it on the edges of a chunk to retain its integrity.

A Hole is an arrangement of empty tiles surrounded by blocks, A Hole cannot be filled, either partially or completely, by any tile. Any arrangement of 1, 2 or 3 empty tiles is considered a Hole. Larger holes, such as the dreaded “Bowtie Formation”, are rare. Avoid holes whenever you can.
