Ordinary World -
In a small and distant town from all other civilizations, a girl named Wisteria lives with her older sister. After both her parents passed in a tragic sinking of a ship while they were off doing business, her sister Alora took care of her. Usually Alora works at her job nonstop to be able to earn enough money for the both of them while Wisteria attends a small school. She’s perfectly happy with her life, and although some days there might not be enough food on the table, it always feels cosy, in this home that she lives in.

424 words written in total.

Wisteria skipped down the path home from school. If she was quick, she might beat her sister Alora and arrive there first- that was a difficult feat to accomplish a few years ago, when Alora had started working, but she got faster every day. Racing or not, the short journey was always pleasant, from the shimmering snow in winter to the blooming flowers of summer. Right now, autumn leaves were slowly drifting from the trees, dancing like butterflies in the wind. The leaves crunched lightly under her feet, and as she rounded the last bend in the path, she looked ahead to her house.

It was a small one, at least compared to the handful of other houses further in town. Wisteria didn’t mind, though. She’d lived in it her entire life, and the cosy little cottage was more than enough room for her and her sister. Maybe it would’ve become crowded over the years, if their parents were still around, but the two of them alone fit inside it just right.

Wisteria wondered what Alora was planning to make for dinner. She hadn’t brought much to school that day, so a snack, at least, was long overdue. Since it wasn’t getting too cold yet, she usually managed to pull together a fresh salad from the garden, if nothing else. With winter on its way, they were trying to save as much food and money as possible for the colder months.

She stepped inside to see Alora already home, unsurprisingly- but Wisteria didn’t mind the small defeat, because she immediately noticed the unfamiliar book in Alora’s hands. “What’s that?” she asked.

Alora looked up and gave a bittersweet smile. “It’s an old cookbook,” she answered. “I found it in the attic the other night. These are the recipes our parents used to make, before the shipwreck.”

“Oh.” Wisteria quietly walked over to take a look. She didn’t remember much of their parents, since she was little when it all happened, but Alora still got that sad look on her face sometimes when thinking about them. The book was open to a recipe for shepherd’s pie, whatever that was- the picture looked good, though.

“I think I’ll try making this for supper, if you don’t mind,” Alora said. “We’re a little short on ingredients right now, but I can probably make it work. Would that be alright?”

“Sure, it looks good to me,” Wisteria responded, and grinned, trying to get Alora to brighten up. “Can I help?”

Alora ruffled her hair fondly. “Sure you can.”

daily done on november 5th: Flower daily! you know the drill. 3 flowers + symbolism. must be 300 words. For this one I decided to try a poem-ish thing, based on a little idea I got looking through the flower meanings, and i like how it turned out. if you read this and you know me irl please don't overthink it too much-

anyways, here it is! 323 words, +500 points (i think?) to Mythology.

i: zinnia (thoughts of absent friends)

it comes each passing day
sometimes a light breeze, sometimes a hurricane
I knew when we parted it might be a while
but never imagined this fear to return.
once, I believed you were only polite
that hints of a bond were just shallow and light
but I know now your loyalty, compassion and care
holding me up when no one else was there.
returning to you may be my greatest wish,
but I fear my courage may never return.

ii: geranium (envy)

you are more bold and more brave than you look.
seizing opportunities with no fear nor regret.
speaking up, stepping out, every chance you receive
spreading truth and light for anyone to hear.
you were ready to grow feathers and fly out that spring
while I clipped my own wings and was too scared to leave.
I wonder, amazed, how you ever could’ve thought
to sit at my side, someone silent, weak and frail.
it plagues me now. why oh why would I destroy my chance
to maintain such a rare, beautiful, unique friendship?
I loathe knowing I haven’t once managed
to extend to you the energy you saved me with.

iii: forget-me-not (love in absence)

appearances deceive those who don’t understand them.
my silence may take the shape of hidden disgust or hatred
but hidden beneath these firm, silent outsides
is a heart caring deeply, who would never risk harming you.
you’re busy, I know, since when you left the nest
you took on new friends, responsibilities, and left me to rest.
perhaps you’d be glad to connect once again,
and make no mistake, I am desperate for that day,
but I could not bear to waste your precious time
so to be silent, to step back, seems only kind.
while I wait, and hope our bond may one day be restored,
I pray for your safety, and that you’ll pray for mine.

March 1st, 2025- 1k intro
1143 words

Hello everyone! I’m tapdancer707, my nickname on here is Lark but you can call me pretty much anything. I’ve been doing SWC for a while, this is the start of my 6th session in a row as a camper! My favorite part is the community aspect of SWC. I love writing, but struggle to stay motivated on a project and keep habits of doing it regularly, and tracking words alongside other people makes it a lot easier. My main project this month will be creating the second draft of a book I wrote in November 2023 as part of Nanowrimo, I spent the past year slowly working on edits and it’s time to get them implemented! I hope to publish the book before the end of the year, and before the fall semester starts if possible.
I’ve been homeschooled almost my whole life, and graduated last May. Right now I’m taking a gap year since my family decided to move to a different state, and I needed the extra time to help pack and unpack everything. I will forever be heartbroken over having to leave my friends, but hey, pain is the best fuel for writing, right? :’) The adults in my life all convinced me I should at least try college, so I’m currently planning to start that this fall, which is why I want to get my book published before then- I don’t want classes to stop me from making that happen, and I also kinda want to show them that I don’t need college in order to get things accomplished in my life. If any of y’all out there also don’t feel drawn to doing college (or any of the jobs where it’s required), I’m happy to help give advice on other paths you can take!
I have a huge range of interests, but most of them involve animals and art in one way or another. I have 3 pet mice and several fish spread across 2 planted ecosystem aquariums, and I’m also going to get a rabbit soon which is exciting! I love researching how to take care of different animals, and how they live in the wild. My parents are also letting me figure out the landscaping at our new house, and I’m planning to use lots of native plants to help attract pollinators.
For the arts side of things, I’ve loved drawing and painting for as long as I remember. I’ve taken a lot of art classes over the years, and my favorite medium (by far) is watercolors, probably because they dry fast and I’m impatient. XD I’ve also done quite a bit of digital art over the years, usually for roleplays, so if you go further back on my Scratch account you’ll probably find some of that. Speaking of roleplays, obviously I love writing! I’ve been making little books by stapling paper together and writing/drawing in it since I was like 5, and more recently I’ve attempted Nanowrimo for the past 3 years (succeeded with the book I’m about to do the second draft of, and got to about halfway the year before and after that). I’ve been back to practicing art a bit more recently in hopes of making my own cover for my book, I’m pretty determined to do everything myself for this one. I also have loved dance for my whole life, I did several years of competitive dance before I graduated and still take a few classes to this day. The next book I’m hoping to finish (after my current one) is actually about dance, it’s very close to my heart and I’m excited to share it with the world when it’s ready. My writing comp entry a few sessions back (the post on July 24 2023 in this forum thread if you want to take a look) was the first form of that story, if you’re interested!
You may notice most of my stories involve friendship in some way, and that is very intentional- I love friendship in stories, perhaps to a point of obsession, and I will never understand why so many good friendships in stories have to turn out being romantic by the end (or why romance exists as a whole genre in the first place lol). Whenever I try to track down new books to read with strong friendships in them, it’s either aimed at 8 year old children or turns out to be about romance after all, so I’m determined to fill that gap with more mature books that focus on friendship instead (think things aimed at teens).
I’m getting close to 1k words for this intro but I’m not sure what else to write- maybe more about what I’ll work on this month? That works. Besides doing that second draft of my book, I’m also going to be researching things a lot- mainly about rabbit care, to get ready for that. I already have a pretty good idea of how to do that from researching on and off over the years, but I want to write down a solid plan for what to do. In addition, researching stuff tends to be a good distraction when I’m getting stressed out, so I’ll probably have other little research things here and there as well. I also have an idea to write a retelling of Swan Lake with a focus on all the other girls who were turned into swans, and (you guessed it) less focused on the romance. That will probably be more of a short story or novella than a full length book, but it seems like a fun way to get more words in to me! Finally, I may work on my second book a bit more. It takes a certain headspace for me to do that one, since it is a pretty emotional story for me, but when it’s finished I think it will be an absolute banger so I want to keep going with it.
Oh hey, speaking of absolute bangers, I also love music! I took piano lessons for a few years when I was little, and now I’m slowly teaching myself violin. I listen to a wide range of music, but I tend to be a bit picky so my collection is like a zillion different bands/artists with one or two songs each lol. The only band I’ve listened to where I like every single song they’ve ever released is The Oh Hellos! They’re fantastic. Recently I’ve been on a bit of a Taylor Swift kick too (mostly some songs from Folklore and TTPD), and I also like a lot of AJR and Imagine Dragons, although with the latter I’ve mostly just heard their older stuff. While I’m writing I like to play instrumentals or lofi mixes, I especially love Takenobu’s cello music for that.
Okay it’s over 1k words now!
