Remix Limit

Have you ever heard of the “copy-paste” practice? “Copy paste” is essentially when people copy another person's video, game, etc, and decide to just make minor changes, essentially just causing the same thing to pop up over and over again, which annoys people who are searching for something ORIGINAL. The “copy-paste” practice also affects the original creators, whose audiences get stolen by thousands of other people. Perhaps update the trending page to have more original projects, rather than a truckload of the same types of projects. This is a big problem on Scratch. Scratch creators are always being put down by others, and creators of an original project will only have their project copied with only like, ONE change to the project, instead of it being entirely different, they would only change the thumbnail, or one piece of dialogue, or just make an exact copy except they only move a couple blocks around. Remixing is ok in moderation, but if something gets remixed too many times, the original is either forgotten or its audience decides to move to use a copy-paste project. It is just crippling to watch your audience get taken away by a person who decided to copy-paste your project. It is sad to see big, popular, and loved creators become forgotten by others stealing the original creators's popularity that was earned from a lot of hard work, only for that “hard work” to be worth nothing later because your project got remixed way too many times. I suggest adding a project remix limit of around 5-10 so that creators can safely keep a good amount of popularity, yet allow others to remix without stealing too much of the original's audience. Please keep Scratch original, keep variety in the trending pages, and keep Scratch popular.

With concern,

This would unfortunately cause the r____ c____ (both spamchains and nonspam chains) community to crumble. No support because of that.

Although copy-paste projects can be annoying I think enforcing a remix limit on projects isn't the way to go, remix culture is a large part of Scratch.

What I'm pointing out is remix limits on all projects, remixes themselves can also have a limit, and it will let people still be able to remix the remixes to make new projects, instead of hoarding off of one single project.

now I'm thinking of it, this shares the same problem as;

3.2 Disable remixing
One of the most important ideas of Scratch is the share aspect. Scratch is a website not only for displaying your work, but also for sharing it with others, and by posting your project on the Scratch website you agree to allow others to remix your work. You are not allowed to write “Do not remix this project” in the Notes and Credits of your project; you may get alerted for this, because it discourages remixing. This suggestion extends to the ability to require permission to remix a project, as you have already given permission to others to use your creations by sharing a project on Scratch; for more information, see this post.

However, a feature that prevents unchanged remixes from being shared is NOT rejected. You can discuss it on this topic.

adding a limit on remixing would probably encourage users to instead steal projects fully uncredited through saving and loading, which is worse

Then make sure the original creator is mentioned in the project, as well as the person who remixed it in the remixer of the remixer's project. (Sounds confusing I know)

They already are though? Note the box(es) giving credit above the Instructions in the project description.

Anyways, identical remixes aren't allowed, although minor remixes are:

A remix of a project is allowed on Scratch, even if the remix only contains minor changes (this includes recolors). However, when you remix a project, you should put in the Notes and Credits what you changed. If you see a project that contains no noticeable changes, please use the Report button on it so the Scratch Team can take a look at it. This suggestion extends to “extremely minor remixes,” such as a remix of a game that gives you 2 points per second instead of 1. As long as the user explains what they changed about the project and gives proper credit, this is okay.

the remix autocredit counts as credit.

now I've fount another way that this is rejected, please see this post before reading this post

this suggestion also violates the terms of use

4.3 All user-generated content you submit to Scratch is licensed to and through Scratch under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license. This allows others to view and remix your content. This license also allows the Scratch Team to display, distribute, and reproduce your content on the Scratch website, through social media channels, and elsewhere. If you do not want to license your content under this license, then do not share it on Scratch.

please read the terms of use again
