“Titles are a very powerful thing, and sometimes they influence your writing. Today, all you have to do is to write 250 words in a story titled “Oasis” for 100 points. Although everyone's titles will be exactly the same, check out another person's writing and notice the similarities and differences in both of your stories. What do you notice? If you provide proof you can get an extra 100 points <3”

I screamed in horror as I hit the wall, stumbling back from the force of the shove. As I regained my composure, I looked around; my mom, of course, wasn’t doing anything. She never did. And now her boyfriend was screaming that he was done dealing with me and that I needed to get out of the house. That was fine by me, I never wanted to be here any more than I needed to be. I picked myself up and forced myself to move quickly despite the pain shooting through my body.

I grabbed my backpack, water bottle and keys from near the front door and left as quickly as I could. I hurry down the street to where my car is parked and climb inside. Once inside I lock the door and look around, before leaning back in the seat, pressing my hands to my face like it could reverse everything that had just happened. Sure, it was nothing new, but that didn’t mean it didn’t suck.

Despite all of whatever it is that I’m feeling right now, I turn my car on and start driving, I have to get to rehearsal before I’m late. Just the thought of that alone made me a little bit happier. I loved musical theater, I’d been doing it for about three years now, and frankly it had become a sort of oasis for me. Something outside of my life at home, something where I could just be myself and not have to worry about getting in trouble for it.

Did it sound cliche? Oh, absolutely; and I was aware of it too. But frankly, I didn’t care. It made me happy, gave me an escape from reality for a few hours a week. Truthfully, that was the best that I could ask for after all. Even if it couldn’t fix things forever at home, it could at least make them a little bit better for me every now and again.

I drove quietly, though I put my music on in the background. I never could handle being in the quiet on my own after all, it opened up too many opportunities for my thoughts to take over… too many opportunities for my memories to come to the front of my mind, the kind of memories that I didn't want to remember. The music helped with that, it gave me something to focus on. I suppose in a way, it was another kind of an oasis that I depended on.

When I arrived at the theater for rehearsal, I got out of my car and smiled immediately as I stood up and saw my best friends nearby. I hoisted my backpack over my shoulder and locked my car, before running over to them with a smile on my face. When I saw them, it was almost like everything that had happened just half an hour ago at home didn’t really matter.

Sure, everything at home sucked. But really, I only had a year or so left. And until then, I had my oasis… multiple of them in fact. I know that they will carry me through life. Everything was going to be okay, maybe not completely, but just enough.

JWC Daily 3 Oasis Title

Years ago, a human colony had crash-landed on the Planet of Vortax, where the Vortax species of aliens lived. Instead of destroying them, the Vortaxs created the Oasis. A big force field dome that protected the humans from the harshness of the planet’s atmosphere. The Vortax would sometimes visit the humans, they made friends and allies with the species.

But five years ago a Vortax ship had appeared inside the dome, and the humans were sure that the Vortax were tired of them and were going to try and drive them from their new home. So they put the Oasis in lockdown. No communication in our out of the dome. No trading. Or interacting. Not with the Vortax or their technology. This kept them safe from the Vortax, kept them outside of their home. But it also locking the humans in.

For five years now we’ve lived in fear. That the Vortax would come back to finish the job. Or that we would slowly starve to death because we would run out of resources, run out of food, and run out of hope. Or that the Oasis dome would finally give out, it hadn’t had maintenance in years, and was slowly deteriorating.

None of the humans ships worked. They had been rotting away for years, and before that had crashed onto the planet. And no human would try and use the Vortax ship. And so the humans were counting down the days till the Oasis finally gave out.

The humans would’ve most likely died on that planet if it wasn’t for a sixteen year old human girl named—

“ZYLA!” I jump slightly with surprise when I hear my name. I quickly lean down and brush a finger along the side of the hover board I’m balancing on. With a soft vrrrrrr… sound the machine powers off and I hop onto the ground. Landing neatly after much practice.

With guilt sitting in my stomach I turn to face the person who had called my name, I already knew who it was. And I could also guess the look of disappointment that filled her features.

It was my older sister; Evadine. Her long brown hair flows around her face, pushed lightly by the wind. Her green eyes narrow on mine and I smile at her.

Slowly I try and tuck the board behind my back but I know she already saw it.

“Hey… Eva.” I say slowly, mind racing trying to find a way to get out of this scenario.

“Why are you all the way out here!? On the edge of the Oasis?” Eva gestures to the big dome that covers a large cirlce of land on the planet. She stalks towards me, crossing her arms across her chest and raising on eyebrow at me. “And with that…”

Realization hits her, and she looks shocked. “Wait… how do you have that? You know it’s illegal to interact with Vortax technology!”

I push dirt around with one foot, and take the hover board out from behind my back. “Yeah, you’re not the first person to say that. I’m just learning to fly it.” I shrug a little, but I know that Eva will overreact, both because she’s just a dramatic person. But also because she was right.

“What am I going to tell mom and dad?” Eva says, twisting a strand of hair around her finger.

I shrug and sheepishly say, “you don’t have to tell them.”

“Zyla! This isn’t a joke, seriously you need to grow up.” Her words sting, and I narrow my eyes at her. Me and Eva usually got along really well, but recently things had been tense. But not just with her, with everyone. The thought of the Oasis dome collapsing any second scared people.

“I am grown up, I’m sixteen. I don’t need my older sister to take care of me anymore.” Now Eva looks hurt but I don’t care. She deserves that, I don’t need her, and sometimes I wish she would just back off.

Eva shakes her head, “where did you get that thing anyway. All the Vortax technology was burned after the Lockdown.”

“No duh,” I snap at her, gripping my board a little tighter as to be sure she wouldn’t try to take it from me. “I just… found it.” I say trying to hold her eye contact because I know she’ll know i’m lying if I look away. But it doesn’t work, she knows me to well.

“Where.” She says harsher this time, and at that moment I see a flash of fear in her eyes.

“I got it from a friend, and I’m learning to fly it.” I say quickly, rushing through my words and hoping she doesn’t get too mad at me.

Eva stops twirling her hair and just stares at me, “friend?” She asks, and now the fear is even darker in her eyes.

“Yes, Eva. You heard me.” I just watch her face, and I can see the different emotions going through her. I take a step forward place the hover board carefully on the ground. “It’s ok, you know that right?” I ask her, placing a hand on her arm.

Eva looks up at me, “what!? Ok? Nothing about this is ok Zyla!”

I shake my head at her, unsure what to do. Should I tell her? I have kept so many secrets from her. Memories and moments flashing in my mind of five years of small lies and excuses. To be honest thats why we had drifted apart, it was my fault.

“Do you want the truth?” I ask her softly, and my sister looks at me.

“There’s more, isn’t there.” Eva says. Not a question. She knows.

I walk with her over to a rock, I leave my Vortax board where I had set it down. We sit down and Eva looks at me. There isn’t fear in her eyes anymore, just wariness, and concern.

“There is more. I…” I take a deep breath, its not that I don’t trust her. It’s that I haven’t told anyone this. “I have been… well… do you remember Evric? The Vortax kid—“

Eva interupts me, “we used to know? Yeah I remember him… why?” Suddenly Eva stands up and backs away from me.

“Please don’t tell me what I think you’re going to tell me.”

I slowly nod my head, “please don’t freak out. I figured out how to go under the Oasis dome and so he would come in and was teaching me how to ride the board! It’s for a good reason, Eva would you just listen to me?!” I yell at her, my quick words trying to beat her to her reaction of what I’m saying.

“ZYLA!! For five years!! You’ve been lying to me?” Eva throws her hands up, rage filling her eyes. And I feel sick to my stomach with guilt.

“I’m telling you now, isn’t that worth something?” I yell back, “I’m not lying now!” Eva shakes her head putting it into her hands.

She looks back at me, “why. Why? Tell me Zyla. What delusion are you under to think you could trust Evric!? He’s one of them!” I can see her hands shaking and I reach out to take it, but she yanks it back like I’m poisoned.

“You don’t understand,” I say yell, my eyes starting to burn, bile rises in my throat.

“WHAT DON’T I UNDERSTAND!?” Eva screams, her face red.

I gesture to outside the dome, “they weren’t going to hurt us.” I lower my tone. “The Vortax were going to teach us to fly their ships so we could go home. They put that there to help us.” The sentence is so simple but I know that Eva’s world is starting to crumble.

“…what?” Her voice has lost all of its energy and she just sounds tired. “Help…? What?”

I take her hand again, realizing just how scared my sister was. Just how scared all the humans of Oasis were. They were terrified they were going to die. But I knew the truth. We didn’t have to die. There was another way.

“You have to trust me, listen I can see if Evric can explain it to you. Ok?” Eva slowly nods her head. “Ok, I trust you. But… why didn’t you tell me sooner?” I feel my heart break as I dread answering that question. “I… didn’t know how you’d react. And I was scared you wouldn’t let me do it.”

Eva hangs her head, “I guess I deserve that. But… what do we do now? Humans hate Vortaxs and the other way around. There’s no way we can convince everyone.” Relief floods my system and I take a breath, she understood.

“Well I have a plan, we can get Evric to bring the leader of the Vortaxs to the passage and then have our Head Officer to come with Captain Carter. They can make ammends and boom! Everythings back to normal!” I try and force a smile but Eva knows it too.

Eva lets out a big sigh, pushing her hair behind her ear. “Well we both know that that’ll never happen.”

I stare at the ground for a second, and then turn to Eva. “We might not get them to come to a realization, but we can get all the humans out of here…” I look across the Oasis, the big orange rocks of the planets landscape. In the distance is the silhouette of the Vortaxs ship. The one that five years ago started this whole issue.

“Zyla… no one knows how to fly the Vortaxs ship–“ She stops mid sentence and looks at me, eyes wide.

I shuffle my feet, “yeah… I’ve also been repairing the ship… and I think I can fly it.”

“YOU CAN FLY A SHIP!?” Eva shouts, almost jumping with shock.

“I think I can fly it. I haven’t actually been able to test it… but Evric and I have talked about it.” I start to ramble about the different things that could go wrong but I stop when I see Eva isn’t paying attention to me.

For some reason her eyes are focused behind me, and they’re filled with real terror.

“Eva?” I whisper and slowly turn around. And what I see is terrifying. The Oasis dome is breaking.

Down on the ground way below us where the rim of the Oasis border is looks like its ripping. The glowing force field is slowly seperating from the border.

The Oasis was breaking.

“No, no, no, no, no, NO!!” I scream, watching as rusty orange air starts to creep into the fresh oxygen that the humans needed. I turn to see matching fear in Evas face.

“We need to go!” I yell, my body shaking with fear. I turn and run, grabbing my sisters hand to pull her with me. I grab my hover board and start sprinting. I turn to make eye contact with Eva, “you have to trust me Eva, when I say jump, jump.” I don’t wait for her to respond, I know my sister will do what I asked.

I yank her hand and start to run towards a cliff edge. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?” Eva’s voice breaks with her yell as I continue to run flat out at the edge. And then suddenly we’re there, standing above a three hundred foot drop.

“JUMP!” I scream, adrenaline pumping through my body. I leap of the edge, quickly brushing my finger along the side of the board and I hear it power on. Then just like i’ve practiced so many times I land on it. I feel Eva land shakily behind me.

Eva wraps one arm around my waist to secure herself and then I hear her turn on her radio. “Hello? Can you hear me!? This is Evadine Synth, I am on the West Side of the Oasis. This is urgent! The Oasis is ripping open. We need everyone to get to the Vortaxs ship!” I make the hover board speed up so that we’re now racing across the Oasis.

“This is not a joke, I’m serious. If you don’t want to be caught in the real atmosphere of the Vortax planet that I suggest you get everyone to the ship. It can seal itself and give us some oxygen.” I hear voices on the other side of the line, but I’m not paying attention because as I look behind us to look at the rip in the force field I see someone flying towards us.

“Hang on!” I yell to Eva as I swing us around and head towards the other board thats flying through the sky.

“Evric!” I shout happily, seeing my blue alien friend. As soon as we’re close I leap from my hover board and he catches me on his. The alien engolfs me in a warm hug, and I feel a rush of warmth and safety.

I look up at him and give him a quick kiss, the fear leaving me for a split second. “Zyla, I saw the Oasis force field. Somethings wrong, it shouldn’t be doing this.” Evric says and we turn to look at the hole thats only getting bigger.

“I know, we’re trying to get everyone to the ship. Maybe I can fly us out of here.” Evric doesn’t question me, he knows not to. When I have my mind set on something nothing will make me weavor.

“Also, Evric this is my sister Evadine. I don’t if you remember her…” Eva is waving her arms in the air to try and keep herself from falling.

I gracefully leap from Evrics board to my own, his hand doesn’t leave my waist while I jump to make sure I don’t fall. I steady Eva with a hand and she shoots me a quick look that reads ‘you didn’t tell me you were dating him!’

“Yes, I remember Eva.” Evric says smiling at my sister.

“Great, now we need to go.” Evric nods in agreement and so we zoom off on our boards. Going as fast as we can to the Vortax ship.

Suddenly I get an incoming call on my wristband, it’s my mom. “Hey Mom,” I say, holding it close to my mouth so she can hear me.

“Zyla what is going on! They said the Oasis is dying? And we’re supposed to go to the Vortax ship?!” I swerve around a large rock.

“Yeah, mom. Do what they’re saying. Everyone needs to get to the Vortax ship, I’ll be there in one minute ok!?” I hear her muffled reply and then the radio goes dead. My stomach drops with worry, our systems are crashing because of the planets air leaking into ours. Everything was going to die soon, including us.

We crest over a hill and there it is, the city of Oasis and the Vortax ship. I see all the people running towards it and filing inside.

“Hold on,” I tell Eva as we near the ground. It’s not one of my best landings but it works, the front of the board scrapes to a stop in the orange dirt of the ground. I turn it off and pick it up looking at the ship in all its glory. Fear makes itself a home in my stomach as I grasp what I’m about to attempt to do.

Evric comes to a much cleaner stop next to us and places a comforting hand on my shoulder. I turn to look at him, the angles of his blue face and bright glow of his amber eyes. “You made sure everything was in place?” I ask, and he nods his head.

“Good.” I turn to Eva, “I need you to make sure everyone gets inside of is safe. Once everyone is in I can close the doors.” Eva nods her head and I Evric hands her a small walky-talky device.

“You can use that to communicate with us.”

Eva doesn’t say anything but instead hugs me, and I feel all the words she wants to say but doesn’t have time to. “I love you.” I whisper in her ear, and she says the same to me. Then without another word she runs of into the crowd.

I turn to Evric, my mind racing with the multitude of things we need to do. He grips my shoulders like I had done to Eva not ten minutes ago. His grip steadies me and reminds me I’m not alone in this.

“Ok, we need to get to the Command room, from there we can control everything.” Evric nods and pulls me closer to him as he powers his hover board back on. “What are you doing?” I ask as we slowly take off and start heading upwards.

“I created a seperate door into the Command Center in case anything like this happened. There’s no way you’re getting through that crowd.” I nod my head and hold on as we rocket upwards. True to his word there’s another door.

We hover for a second while Evric slides a fancy key into the keyhole and turns it. The door opens with a hiss and we jump inside.

Without hesitation I run to the console and start pressing buttons. Hours of reading the user manual and talking with Evric had given me so much information. But it was useless if it didn’t work now. Even if there was oxygen in the ship there wasn’t enough to last long.

Evric walks across the room from me and presses a button. The walls fold away and I can hear the voices of hundreds of humans, running, and calling for each other. Once I’m sure the oxygen systems are working then I run to look down at the people.

There are four level of the ship, each as big as a football stadium. This ship was designed for cargo and so there were no seats. So everyone was running and sitting on the ground where ever they could.

Evric stands next to me with an arm around my shoulders, the ship is ready to go. We just have to wait for everyone. I stand there for what feels like an eternity watching the cloud of orange dust and storm get closer and closer. I can see the Oasis force field flickering in and out.

Finally I hear Eva’s crackly voice over the radio, “ok, everyones here. We need to go!” And then i'm moving again.

Evric is my partner as I pull levers and hit buttons. The huge doors to the ship close slowly. And as they do I hear the ship humming as it powers up the boosters ready to go. With a loud CLANG!! The doors slam shut and hiss as they seal. And then I can breathe again. Everyone was in the ship and no air would get in. We were safe, for now.

As I take a deep breath I hear cheers coming from down below. I walk out to the edge and gaze down and everyone is on their feet and yelling with joy. I don’t see any fear, not from the fact that we’re in a Vortax ship or that the Oasis is crumbling. Just happiness that they’re alive. Evric looks happy and nods to me. He presses a button that causes a ramp to go out across the opening. Where everyone could see me. He wanted me to give a speech?

I step forward, walking out across the ramp. With a deep breath I begin, “five years ago we believe that the Vortax wanted to get rid us. But I’m here to tell you that we were wrong.” I hear gasps echo across the crowd. And somehow I know Evas down there cheering me on. “I actually know a Vortax, and he’s told me they were simply trying to help. They were going to teach us to fly their ships ourselves so that we could go home. They believed we had a home planet to return too.” I motion for Evric to stand next to me, and he does.

“This is Evric, and he has taught me many things. What I just told you is an example. I now know so much. And I believe that I can fly this ship out into space. But there’s no way we will survive out in space. There are little to no provisions on this ship. So I will tell you what we need to do.”

I go on to explain how we need to make amends with the Vortax people and kindly ask them to help us. If they don’t we have no other options and will most likely die. “Five years ago,” I repeat, “we believed this ship was our end. And now I’m here to tell you that this ship is our salvation.”

ONE YEAR LATER.

I sit in my new apartment in the new and improved Oasis. It was bigger now, and of course for everyone. I look up as Eva and Evric enter the room, laughing at some joke he made. I stand up and greet them each with a hug, Evric gets a kiss.

One year ago we had taken off from the dying Oasis and reached back out to the Vortax people. The accpeted our apology on one condition, we would blend our races together. Become one with each other and make a council of leaders from each species. Me, Eva, and Evric were on that council. And for the year that we had lived together there had been no issues.

And so as me and my sister and boyfriend look out over the new Oasis I feel a sense of pride at what we accomplished.

Download Oasis NOW for a free 65% OFF your first purchase!” The advert on screen shouted at me. Ugh, that grammar bothered me so much. ‘Free 65% off’ is just a redundancy, I thought. My mom walked in the room just as I got away from that thought.

“Hey, honey, I've seen this ad for a new application, and it's amazing!!—” I felt like my blood was going to boil if I heard that dang word again. Please, let it be something else, please, not Oasis. I gagged internally.

“If you say it's Oasis, I—” I stopped myself before saying something rude, for the sake of my old mother.

“Wow, dear! How did you do that?” My mom seemed genuinely surprised.

“I wish I didn't” I muttered. As mom do, she heard me under my breath.

“Why? It's a great app, and they make great adverts.” I couldn't believe what I was hearing. What was getting into my mother?

“Mom- I- it's a scam!” I accidentally screamed, out of pure rage and frustration that I'd get whenever I'd see their ads. They were everywhere. “Listen, they take your data- And they– I think they brainwash people or something.”

“Oh, that's absurd.” My mom brushed it off like nothing. And then I saw it, there was a glint of red in her eyes. Just for a moment, and then it was gone. She reached towards me and grabbed me by the shoulders.

“Download. Oasis”. She sounded almost robotic, inhumane, as she repeated the same two words over and over again.

JWC AOTD:

Describe a random act of kindness you witnessed, gave or received. How did it impact you or others? Write at least 150 words and share!

So one act of kindness that happened to me recently was when I was shopping for my family members for christmas. Most of the things I needed I got from Amazon, but I hadn’t really gotten anything for my little sister yet. So I asked my dad if he could take my shopping our little shopping center near where I live. My dad said yes.

I had remembered my sister talking about this necklace she had seen at Francescas and it was two necklaces that came together. One of them was the big dipper and one of them was the little dipper which represented big sister and little sister. And I thought it was just so sweet and so I went to see if I could get one for her for christmas.

I walked into Francesca’s and was overwhelmed with the amount of cute things in that small shop. I went to the jewelry section and looked around for the necklace. But I couldn’t find it. Worry started to fill me because other than that I didn’t know what I would get my sister from here.

So in a last attempt at getting something I go and ask the lady behind the cash register. It was just her that day because it was a small store. I tell her what i’m looking for and she looks for it with me. But we can’t seem to find it.

“I’ll check to see if we have any in stock.” She says and goes behind the counter. I go and tell my dad whats going on and then she comes over with the necklace in her hands! She had found the LAST ONE IN STOCK. She fixes the chains so that it sits right and hands it to me.

I walk around a little bit more and then go back to the counter to check out. I hand her the expired coupons my sister had given me. She told me she’d check to see if they worked. I stand there nervously. The necklaces were twenty-five dollars, and when she finally rings me up she says the total is five dollars. I pause for a second in awe. I say thank you, now I realize not enough for what she’d done for me.

That Francesca’s worker spread Christmas Spirit like nobodys business and made my day, no week. I plan I going back over there and leaving her a present. Because I think we all need to learn from her. One good action sparks another.

On christmas day my sister unwrapped the necklace that the worker had carfully wrapped herself. She was super excited to see the necklace that she had described to me. All thanks to that one employee who made it her job to find the last necklace of the kind in the store.

There are good people out there. And when you find them make sure you pass on gesture. Like dominoes. We can all make the world a better place.

**Title: The Echo of the Forest**

In a small village nestled at the edge of an ancient forest, tales of magic thrived among the townsfolk. The villagers often spoke of the whispers that traveled through the trees, echoing the stories of those who had come before. It was said that if you listened closely, you could hear the laughter of children who had long since grown up and moved away, or the soft melodies sung by the moonlit night.

A curious girl named Elara lived in the village. Her grandmother had filled her mind with stories about the forest’s enchanted wonders. Every night, Elara would sit by the fire, captivated by her grandmother's tales of brave adventurers, hidden treasures, and mystical creatures that roamed the woods. As she grew older, her curiosity turned into a yearning to explore the forest herself.

One misty morning, unable to resist the call any longer, Elara set off toward the towering trees. As she stepped onto the forest path, the air grew cool and fragrant with the scent of pine and damp earth. The sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow.

As Elara wandered deeper, she discovered a clearing filled with colorful wildflowers and a soft, glimmering brook. She knelt to touch the water, and as she did, she heard a soft giggle behind her. Turning around, she saw a small, delicate creature floating just above the ground—a fairy, with gossamer wings shimmering in the sunlight.

“Welcome, traveler,” the fairy chimed, her voice melodic and gentle. “Many come searching for what the forest holds, but few truly listen to its heart.”

Intrigued, Elara asked, “What do you mean by listening to its heart?”

The fairy smiled brightly and waved her hand, revealing more magical beings hidden amongst the trees. “Every plant, every creature, every breeze carries a story. You must open your heart and listen. Only then will you understand the true magic of this place.”

With each moment, Elara felt like she was awakening to a new world. She listened as the trees spoke of the seasons, the flowers shared secrets of growth, and the brook sang of the journeys it had taken. In that moment, she became part of the forest's story.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, Elara realized it was time to return home. The fairy gifted her a tiny vial of forest dew and whispered, “Use it to remember this day, and always keep listening.”

Elara carried the vial and the magic of her adventure back to the village. From that day on, she became the storyteller, sharing the wisdom of the forest with anyone willing to listen. And though she returned to her world, the echo of the forest’s heart would forever resonate within her, a reminder of the magic that lies in the stories we all hold.

Character Sheet

Name: Clément Guillaume Cantegrel

Age: 12

Gender: Cis Male

Pronouns: he/him

Appearance: He stands at average height for a twelve year old boy, though his back is slightly hunched. Not caring much about his appearance, he wears casual clothes, usually a pair of jeans with a t-shirt, or when it gets cold, a simple sweater. He has pale skin and ruffled brown hair. His facial features show that he had known better days - the light brown eyes had long lost their light; the brows are often furrowed; the mouth tight-lipped. Some say that when he was smaller, he had been a handsome boy, but one can no longer say so.

Family: He was born to Maléane and Guillaume Cantegrel as their first and only child. His mother worked in marketing and his father was a professional cellist. For the first few years of Clément's childhood, the family lived happily together, but things took a turn when the father joined an orchestra that gave concerts worldwide. Every few weeks he'd embark on a week-long travel, leaving his son and wife behind. Though respecting her husband's work, Maléane soon grew tired of Guillaume's frequent departures. Fights became more common between the couple. A year later they decided they couldn't live like this anymore, and divorced when Clément was eight years old. The boy, having a growing interest in cello, went to live with his father. However, two years later, Guillaume became very ill and passed away soon after. The boy went to live with his mother, but despite her warm and tender caring, he was too grieved by his father's death to be close with his mother anymore. The mother and son are still working on their relationship with each other up to now.

Friends: Clément had many childhood friends, but they fell apart as soon as Clément's father passed away. He became cold, distant and ill-tempered, not allowing anyone to approach him anymore. The only person Clément might consider a good friend is his cello teacher, an old friend of his father's who comes twice a week to his house to teach him cello. This is also the only person Clément confides in.

Relationships: N/A

Education level: He attends middle school.

Religion: N/A

Birthday: 25th August 2012

Hometown: Paris, France

Personality: Before the tragedy of his father's death, Clément was a charming and extroverted child. Generous, good spirited, kind and most of all, happy, he was more or less the ideal friend. However, grieved by his father's early death, he locked himself from the world, never smiling again. Now ill-tempered, cold and unreachable, even his mother can't approach him anymore.

TRIGGER WARNING: IMPLIED ABUSE
Name: Rachel Torres
Age: 32
Gender: Female (She/Her)
Date of Birth: 3rd April 1992
Appearance: Rachel is approximately 170cm tall (5ft 6in) with light skin and brown hair that she has in various states of braided, depending on how much time she has in the morning. Rachel also has green eyes and typically wears light blue shirts and blue jeans. She wears black work boots, and also has a tote bag packed to the brim with file folders.
Place of Birth: Sunshine Bay Central, Sunshine Bay
Religion: Christian
Job: Social Worker

Family: Rachel’s mother, and her father (both of whom I have not yet named) and the foster children that her parents and herself have welcomed into their home over the years.

Friends: Renée Johanssen, Robert Johanssen, Alison Johanssen, Makayla Willow Brunstetter, Stephanie Hayes

Relationships: None - Rachel is not in any romantic relationships.

Education Level: Rachel has completed 4 A-Levels in Maths, Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry. She has graduated university with a BSc in Paramedic Science. She currently works as a social worker.

Personality
Rachel is someone who loves to help others. She’s been doing it for as long as she can remember - even before she started helping her parents foster children. Rachel is also very understanding, knowing how to explain hard concepts to young children.

She also never gives up, even when it’s hard, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. She’ll often stay up late to finish paperwork, or wait hours in line to get through government bureaucracy.

However, Rachel is a heavily emotional person and always takes home far too much emotional baggage, making every single case personal to her. She can also get emotional quite easily and holding back when emotions are running high is something she struggles to do. Rachel is also very easily sidetracked as well - if there’s someone who needs her help, she will drop whatever she’s doing to help that person.

Backstory
At twelve years old, Rachel’s parents talked to her about becoming part of a foster family. Rachel agrees to this, and meets Stephanie Hayes, the social worker who helps them with their cases. Over the years, Rachel enjoys fostering and helping other people out. She’s also seen children who have been taken from bad domestic situations who have come in hurt and it drives her to become a paramedic, and also become a foster parent herself.

She finishes school in 2009, and goes on to study paramedic science at university, graduating in 2012. She becomes a qualified foster parent in 2012 as well, mainly taking in emergency placements.

During her second full year as a paramedic (July 2014) Rachel is called to a home where a young boy has been badly injured. She takes him to the hospital, and at the end of the shift, she gets a call from Stephanie for a foster placement.

Rachel finds her placement is the same boy she helped earlier, and it absolutely destroys her emotionally, causing her to break down in tears.
At this point, Rachel begins to try and switch her job into becoming a social worker, and although the process is very slow, Rachel eventually gets approved in 2020.

At this time, she meets Makayla Willow Brunstetter, who is a criminal prosecution attorney, prosecuting a family member of a young foster child. The two talk and begin to form a long working relationship and friendship.

Around this time, Rachel also begins talking to Renée Johanssen and her family (although Alison is not yet born) about fostering. They sign the papers and go ahead, and Rachel and Renée also begin to form a long-lasting friendship.

Rachel is made Alison’s godmother, and here we land at the present day.

“Hurry up, Tessa!” Eva called from across the airport check-in concourse. “We need to get our bags checked in really soon,”

Tessa rolled her eyes as if to say ‘Seriously?’ and crossed her arms. “Relax,” Tessa smiled. “We’ve got ages,”

Eva glared at Tessa. “You call twenty minutes - TWENTY minutes - ages? Come on!”

Tessa groaned. “Okay, okay, okay!” She held her hands up in protest. “Fine, I’ll hurry up.”

“Thank you,” Eva sighed. She hated travelling with Tessa, her younger sibling. Tessa was far too relaxed about travelling, and the fact that their check-in desk closes in twenty minutes didn’t seem to phase her at all.

“Alright, fine, give that to me,” Eva growled, pushing Tessa away from her luggage. “Everything is going in, we are shutting this suitcase, and we are running off to our plane. If you can’t be fast, you don’t get a say.”

“But Eva, now I can’t find-” Tessa protested.

“Not finding things is a minor inconvenience compared to missing our flight.” Eva replied.

“I hate travelling with you,” Tessa stared at Eva, who had just finished shoving everything into the suitcase and had it shut.

“Well, the feeling is mutual,” Eva muttered, dragging her sister’s suitcase towards the short line at the check-in desk. “I wouldn’t be travelling with you if you didn’t come to visit me in London.”

Tessa groaned. “Never should have hopped on that stupid flight.”

Writing dare! 412 words!

On a crisp autumn afternoon, the leaves danced in vibrant hues of amber and gold in the small town of Brookwood. A group of friends—Emma, Jake, Mia, and Sam—were lounging on the porch of Emma’s house, sipping hot cider and reminiscing about their childhood adventures. Everything seemed perfect until Mia’s phone buzzed with an unexpected message from their friend, Mark.

“Hey guys, I’m in trouble. Can we talk?”

The laughter faded, and concern set in. Mark had always been the glue of their group, the one who could lift their spirits with a joke or a smile. Now, the weight in his message was palpable. They hurried inside, determination replacing their earlier playfulness.

With a quick group text, they agreed to meet at the park—a place filled with memories of laughter and late-night confessions. As they gathered, the mood was heavy. Mark arrived, tears streaking down his cheeks. “I messed up,” he said, his voice trembling. “I didn’t study for the finals coming up, and now I’m at risk of failing. I thought I could handle it, but…”

His words hung in the air like thick fog; failure was something none of them had ever associated with Mark. Emma stepped forward. “We’ll help you, Mark. We can study together. You’re not alone in this.”

Gratitude flooded Mark’s eyes, but self-doubt flickered within. “But what if it’s too late?”

“Do you remember when we trained for that marathon?” Jake chimed in. “You kept pushing through, even when you wanted to quit. We’ll tackle this like we did then—together.”

Mia, ever the optimist, offered a plan. They would meet every evening for a week, turning Emma’s living room into a study haven. They each promised to share their notes and help with difficult topics.

The next day, armed with pizza, energy drinks, and a mountain of shared resources, they transformed their study sessions into something magical. Laughter melded with learning, and before long, the tension that hung over Mark began to lift. Their support and camaraderie acted as a balm for his anxiety.

As the week flew by, so did Mark's worries. Final exam day arrived, and as they gathered for one last pep talk, Mark smiled, hope igniting in his eyes. “I could never have done this without you guys.”

And as they cheered him on, they knew that no matter the outcome, they had rallied together, solidifying not just their friendship but the unbreakable bond that would see them through any storm.

writing dare: write abt frying pans

The Frying Pan’s Redeeming Adventure

The frying pan had served its family well—golden pancakes, sizzling bacon, and even a few ill-fated attempts at flambé. Its scratched surface and wobbly handle were marks of loyalty. Every dent told a story, every scar a testament to years of hard work. But loyalty wasn’t enough for

“Finally,” the mother said one afternoon, holding up a gleaming new skillet like a trophy. “No more of that old thing!”

Old thing? The frying pan fumed as it was shoved to the back of the cabinet, where it landed with a dull thud among mismatched lids and an ancient, forgotten colander. Its indignation simmered in the darkness. Sure, it wasn’t perfect, but hadn’t it proven itself time and time again? Days stretched into weeks, the frying pan untouched and brooding.

Then, one morning, everything changed. A hand reached into the cabinet and wrapped around its handle.

“Grab an old pan for the fire,” the dad muttered.

The frying pan felt a jolt of hope as it was tossed into a camping box. Nestled between marshmallows and a slightly bent spatula, it bounced along the dirt road, excitement bubbling up alongside a twinge of nervousness. What if it failed? What if this was its last chance to prove its worth?

That evening, under a canopy of stars, the frying pan was yanked out and placed over a crackling campfire. Its surface hissed with joy as it embraced the heat, coming alive once more. The dad dropped in some sausages, which browned beautifully, their smoky aroma filling the air and drawing the family close.

“Perfect,” the dad said, flipping the sausages with a practiced hand.

The shiny skillet, meanwhile, sat useless on the picnic table. “Too slippery for the fire,” the dad muttered with a dismissive wave. The frying pan felt a surge of pride.

As the family laughed and shared stories around the fire, the frying pan savoured the moment. This was what it was made for—bringing people together, feeding not just their bodies but their spirits too.

Later, just as the family was settling in for the night, a sudden gust of wind sent embers flying toward the tent. Sparks danced dangerously close to the fabric, and chaos erupted. Without thinking, the dad grabbed the still-warm frying pan and smothered the embers. The threat was extinguished in seconds, and the family breathed a collective sigh of relief.

“You saved the day,” the dad said, patting the frying pans handle before setting it down gently.

The frying pan basked in the praise. It had proven itself yet again—not just as a tool but as a hero.

When the trip ended, the frying pan returned home. This time, it wasn’t shoved back into the dark recesses of the cabinet. Instead, it earned a prime spot on the kitchen counter. Its dents and scratches were no longer seen as flaws but as badges of honour, a reminder that even the oldest, most unassuming things could rise to the occasion and shine.

It wasn’t just a frying pan anymore. It was a legend, its story living on with every meal.

Word Count: 548

Name: Simone Morin
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Pronouns: she/her
Religion: Atheist (non-religious)
Education Level: A junior in high school
Birthday: November 12, 2010
Hometown: Val-David, Quebec

Appearance: Simone is short for her age, similar hight to her brother who is a year younger. She has long brown hair that she often has in a braid. Like the rest of her family, she easily tans in the summer, but get very pale in the winter. She has brown eyes, so dark it's hard to see the pupils. Simone often wears a sweater and jeans in the winter/fall, and likes to wear tank tops and jean shorts in the summer/spring.

Family: Simone's father left just before her brother was born. She never really knew him and neither did her brother until they were 9 and 10. Her mom, Mila Caron, is a single mother and works at a bank. Her younger brother, Leo Morin, who is only a year younger, is extremely bouncy and has a very loud personality. Simone's extended family live all the way in Quebec City, so they only see each other on holidays or special occasions.

Friends: Simone doesn't have many school friends, as she is very focused on academics. Her one friend from school, Marie Bouchard, is very science-y. Marie is often teased and called ‘Marie Curie’ because of her name and interests. Outside of school, though, Simone is part of a volunteer group that runs STEM programs at the community centre for elementary school students. She has many friends from there including Thomas Cote, Eva Tremblay, and Caroline Martin, who are her closest.

Relationships: Simone has an especially rocky relationship with her father, Victor Morin. She barely knew he existed until four years ago when her mother was going through some money struggles. Mila contacted Simone's father and he agreed to take them until Mila could get back on her feet. Simone and Leo stayed with Victor for almost two months. Leo stayed positive and loved having a father for once, but Simone hated it. She could tell Victor was only doing this out of guilt. After that, Leo now stays with Victor every other month for a week, but Simone refuses to stay with her father again. Simone is pretty close with Marie, her friend from school, as they have been friends since middle school. They often have join study sessions which usually turn into a fun sleepover. Simone's mother, Mila, supports Simone's passion for STEM, but encourages her to take breaks and to just be a kid. Simone does not currently have a partner, but she did date Caroline for a month in 2024, which made their relationship a bit awkward afterwards.

Personality: Simone is very academic focused. Like previously mentioned, she is part of a STEM program where she and her friends teach at the community centre. She is very goal-oriented and a bit of a perfectionist. She can do anything if she tries hard enough, but can often be caught up and forget to relax. Simone can be very talkative around her friends, but around others she is not close with, she almost doesn't talk at all. She is a very friendly person to those she trusts. She is known hold grudges, though, and is not one to forget about it.

JWC Word War
With: Annie For: 6 min

Gracie clicks go on the timer and realizes that she didn’t even give herself any time to really think. Her hands sprint across the keys as not needed adrenaline pumps through her veins through her fingers and into her keyboard. She wonders for no reason in particular if people could feel the energy that she could feel go through her in her writing. maybe that was a thing for the future, to be able to feel the emotions that the author really wanted to convey. see sometimes when she was writing Gracie could feel the emotions of her characters. feel like she was there experiencing the things they were going through. she ponders that for a moment. and then her mind drifts to the earbuds in her ears and the odd fact that she had no music playing but for some reason still had kept them in her ears. music, she wondered. who invented it? who invented singing? who thought that the words we speak can be said in such a way that it is beautiful and can inspire feelings. almost like the feelings that she wants to convey through her writing and into her readers’ soles. she wants to make an impact with her writing. because she wrote because of the impact reading had on her. In moments in life when she had nothing to do or something bugging her, Gracie had always turned to reading. books mainly. and those stories would whisk her away to other universes and places. where the people were kind and the problems were solvable. and that had helped her through the darkest moments of her life. She wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to help everyone who needed it. but if she was lucky and got her wish one day a kid her age would pick up the book that she had written and be saved from their own reality from the things in life that bugged them. wow, she thinks to herself looking at the words and wondering why this whole thing got so deep. Sometimes that happened to her, a simple story turned into a lesson to teach people. but it was all true, she wanted to write good books that people would fall in love with and tell their friends “You need to read this book it’s so good.” maybe one day in the future my dream will come true she thinks. then the timer goes off and she takes a step back. smiling.

JWC Daily #4 Character Sheet!

Name: Zyla Blaire Smith

Age: 17

Birthday: January 3rd, 2025 (twas the day I came up with her story idea)

Gender: Female

Appearance: She is a little on the shorter side but never let her hear you say that. She has brown short choppy hair (yes she cut it herself) usually with the tips dyed some crazy color. Her eyes are green, and she has a light smattering of freckles around her nose. She has multiple peircings (as you might be understanding she is a rebel.) She usually is wearing some form of space jumpsuit, or cargo pants with multiple pockets, tank tops, and big sweatshirts. She’s either in combat boots or slippers.

Family: She has her sister Evadine Synth who is 20 years old. She’s just an older (prettier again don’t let Zyla hear you say that) version of Zyla. She is taller and has longer hair and no freckles. She also has her mom, who is an officer for the humans. And her dad, who is an engineer. As well as their adopted alien space dog named Helio.

Friends: Zyla doesn’t have a ton of friends because she doesn’t really like interacting with other people on a intimate level. She doesn’t like sharing things about herself. The only people who really know her is her family (mainly Evadine) or her boyfriend Evric (more about him later).

Relationships: She didn’t date for most of her teenage years but she starting meeting with Evric in private after The Lockdown happened. They met for five years and at some point they went from friendship to relationship and they’re now dating. They work perfectly together because they were friends for so long before. (if you’re actually reading this than go see my daily from yesterday in which I tell the whole story.)

Education: Zyla as you can probably guess doesn’t really like having to sit still, so most of her learnings is from hands on experience. She likes to fly different machines, and also learn how to use different tools and weapons. She refuses to learn math though and is determined to do it all from guessing than from equations. In terms of what she enjoys doing shes at a work level of ability. Everything else….

Religion: She practices Christianity even though there aren’t many churches in the Oasis and they need to rebuild after the Breach. (Again read my daily from yesterday! https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/796598/?page=3#post-8315967 )

Personality: I’ve talked a little about her personality but lets do more!! She is a very feisty person and won’t take nothing from nobody. When she wants to do something then she will do it. She can interact with people but she doesn’t want to because she doesn’t want to truly open up to someone. She is kind though and isn’t a rude person.

Overall: Zyla is a brilliant human and she just needs to work on opening up to people, her issue is not wanting to be vulnerable. (#LIFELESSON)

Total: 495 words (AUGH!! IT ONLY NEEDED TO BE 200!!)
This is just a first draft and I'm planning on making much more for her story!! If you actually read all of this then yay!! And feel free to go read her other story! (I'm a proud mama of that one lol!!!!)

Makayla sighed as she put her pen down for what felt like the firt time in her already long day. She had a court date tomorrow in the early morning, and it was already past midnight. She needed to go to bed.

Silently hating herself for making such a bad decision to stay up late to finish off her paperwork, Makayla quickly sorted through the pile of papers and found all the documents she needed for the case she was going to prosecute tomorrow. She would just have to run to the courthouse from her apartment in Marina Bay Road.

Yawning, Makayla finished packing her bags and grabbed her unfinished cup of coffee, downing it and leaving the cup on the table, so she hopefully wouldn’t fall asleep during the journey home.

Makayla walked out of her office and into the open square, where she felt the blustery night wind in her face. It was a nice, cooling, ocean breeze that wasn’t too strong. Just the sort of thing she liked. After she took it in, she began heading to the nearby metro station to catch her train down to Marina Bay.

Makayla walked into the rather empty station’ tapoing her pay-as-you-go BreezeCard on the barrier, before entering the station and heading down to the platform to catch her train. She had

As you walk down his street, you will find an assortment of balls and bats all in a yard. You have stumbled upon the house of Dylan! When you go inside, you might notice a very whiny sister, and 2 nice parents. He’ll be in his room (working on Scratch), outside with his friends playing sports, or reading in his den. Oh hi! Let me talk about the one and only Dylan.

I am in middle school and have various activities, such as baseball, soccer, swimming, and of course reading/writing. I am somewhat famous at my school for my shenanigans (I don’t get detention or anything, just start ridiculous and sadly in the past, brainrot things such as a Mewing portfolio, don’t hate on me, that was last year)

I am a huge Mets fan, as can be inferred by my profile picture, and I’m obsessed with all Gordon Korman/ Stuart Gibbs, KOTLC, and Harry Potter. I also love Wiffle ball and I spend time every week practicing for upcoming tournaments with my other baseball friends. I love SoKeefe, and I believe that Slughorn gave Merope the love potion that she used on Tom Riddle Sr.
Running out of time, so that’s all about me!

The Gims are tired, restless, sick of scavenging for precious energy. There is angst amongst themselves, but no one has the strength to do anything about their dislikes. Let’s take it back. After the Echo and Vortex factions formed in Emberwall City, non-agents fled to places like, the land of mining. Then their Mayor, Cole, got trapped in an air balloon. He covered up the real reason he was in the balloon though. He was working for the Crafter, for multi-dimensional travel and was trying to escape to space. Admiral Pulsar and Mayor Cole then worked together and built a majestic mothership, The Alphastar. While it took a lengthy process, of designing, mining for materials, and actually building the huge ship, it was ready within a few years. They planned to leave without coming back, while Vesper, the Gim most trusted by the Crafter, stayed behind to communicate with them. Some notable gims on the Alphastar included, Admiral pulsar, and Dr. Aventon. Dr. Aventon was working on Chemical Supreme, a powerful substance that even I do not know the full capabilities of. However it can open vaults and many strive for it. The first place the crew of the Alphastar expllored was the planet of Tenebris. The mission objectives included collecting 189 liters of Novarite, placing 12 horticulture vessels south of the landing area, and releasing 62 liters of Carboflux. They had many missions, but eventually the Chemical Supreme infected the plants. The Alphastar crashed and they landed in a desert. Now they were tired and upset but they found Fishtopia and lived happily ever after.

Daily #4 (Character Sheet);
Pivk is a 56 year old Anglican man. His residences include a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom cottage in Nova Scotia, his hometown. He normally lets renters live there, but occasionally visits when he needs a break from life. If you were to send a letter to him, you would address it to an undisclosed location in Beverly Hills. You may be wondering how a kid from a low-income family in the middle of nowhere grew to be so high on the social ladder. He cut some corners, made the right friends, and always thought through his actions. He is now working as a foreign currency trader. Standing at a slightly below average height of 67 inches, he is stocky and strong, a result from his previous job back in Canada as a personal trainer for hockey players. He has jet black hair, piercing cobalt blue eyes, and a chiseled jawline. His small stature has people often overlook him, allowing an advantage when working in the currency business. His parents have had their differences, debating over ridiculous things like a bottle of orange juice, to the debate over the possibility of selling their house. In the long run though, they have always worked it out. He’s an only child, but is very tight with his cousin, Mateo. They’ve helped each other with making good contacts, despite the major differences in the art world compared to the currency industry. While Pivk remains a more solitary person, caring more for himself than others (except for those tight) while Mateo often gives people the benefit of the doubt. Pick has had some short-term relationships but doesn’t fancy sharing his money, scarred from people trying to get access ot his bank account.

Daily 5 (Bird poem)
The birds flutter there wings
Leaves, softly falling down
The tranquility is awe-inspiring
And the only thing you can hear are birds whistling

While all seems very wholesome, and well meant
The sounds portray a different vibe
Hunger could be it, especially those youngsters
As could musical yearning, for those who have been gifted with talent

Only the 2 winged fellow truly grasps what it is chirping
For me, I picture the woe of a lost one
A great bird, who was savagely eaten
Or perhaps a tree, lost to fungus

Other animals likely notice
But their understanding is also limited
For a fox, it adds a want to shut them up
The bugs are praying that they don’t use their mouths to gobble them up

It is so calming to listen to
But it always lays down a blanket of uneasiness
Beneath the coddling of the beauty
That is why the forest is such a wonderful place
