Can we talk about comment advertising?

I know many times advertising in the comments of a project isn't exactly a huge deal and should not be treated as such, but it has gotten very, very bad. On a regular featured project, I can only scroll about 1-2 comments before I see an advertisement. I know it can simply be ignored, but I feel like it's getting out of hand.

We have a forum for advertising your projects. I don't see reason to do it in a comment section. Enforcing a rule that prohibits advertising in the comments and brings awareness to the Show and Tell could increase the overall effectiveness of Show and Tell as more people would see it.

There are also several studios meant for advertising projects. Advertising in a comment section just seems like unnecessary clutter to me.

barely any people know about the forums because its so hidden, so maybe we should make it easier to access. people just advertize in comment sections because they don't know forums exist / don't trust it as a way to get views. I don't see why they would know any better, its not like its consistently the same person each time

I get that, but I think enforcing a rule that would show people who advertise in comments the Show and Tell forum could raise awareness of the forum and put advertisements where they actually should go. Plus, more people would see the Show and Tell forum which would add to its original purpose. Plus, advertising in a forum allows you to show a lot more of your game than simply leaving a link in a comment section.

Comment advertising is always against the rules unless the project creator says it's allowed. There's no gray area anyway, so probably just report those comments.

It actually IS against the rules unless the project owner specifically says it's allowed. So more people should report it and maybe if the Scratch Team starts to hand out a few short-term bans, people will stop doing it.

I hate it, I have zero tolerance for it on my projects.

I think they could be referring to the “…and avoid spamming…” rule in the Community Guidelines. However, I think this is way too vague and doesn't apply to all comment advertising. The overall issue is not the fact that a person may advertise in a comment section several times but instead the fact that many people do it which leads to the same effect.

My bad. There is actually a rule that states that comment advertising is prohibited. (From the Scratch Rules on the Scratch Wiki: “…or are attempts to gain fame by posting links to one's own projects or posting advertisements.” However, this rule doesn't seem very enforced considering the amount of advertisements I usually see.

My entire thought process for this is that the comment section of a project is NOT a place for people to advertise their projects. The original purpose of a comment section is to provide helpful feedback on the topic of the project (however this is not the case for all projects) and simply leaving a link and “please play my game” is not providing much insight to the said project.

As per this policy, ads are already not allowed in most places.

If you see an ad where it isn't allowed (ads are allowed in Show and Tell, forum signatures, people can advertise on their own profile(s) and project(s), and related studios), please report it.

Also, I've gotten permanently banned (I appealed) for telling people that I'm reporting them for advertising

Yeah, you shouldn't publicly report people- for any reason- because it can start flame wars.

Just silently report and move on.
