why do people get banned from scratch

Most of the time, for misbehaving. A ban serves to protect the community from further misbehavior and to teach the user that they need to behave better in the future.

bans are used to help regulate what happens on the website and to keep Scratchers safe.
users can get banned for causing harm to the website or community (or themselves), for example from being mean to people, maliciously trolling, sharing personal contact details, or sharing about inappropriate or sensitive things. often bans happen when a user has broken the Community Guidelines repeatedly, but it's possible to get banned without first receiving alerts.
you can learn more about bans here - https://en.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Ban

either because nobody noticed/reported it, or because it would be better suited to an alert or some other means of notification/reminder from the Scratch Team. banning someone is sometimes seen as more of a “last resort”.

Well, only the first few notifications load, so @griffpatch's 1,654,762+ unread messages don't likely result in a HTTP 504 server timeout error.

And alerts from the ST for any reason (from “click this to become a Scratcher” to “do that again and you're banned”) always appear in their own section at the top of your messages.

why do people get banned from scratch

Getting banned in Scratch is when the Scratch team disallows a registered user or IP address from using the Scratch website, and Scratch editor and interacting with the Scratch online community. A ban in Scratch is imposed when a user misbehaves, performs disrespectfully, or inappropriately in Scratch.
